Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

In any event, if they'd just taken their ass rapings quietly, the glorious GrandExperimentOfSuccessWithHonor would still be shining example for all of college athletics, and we'd all have the statue through which to remember Joesus.

BEAT NEBRASKA!

This might be the best summation of the cultist ethos I have seen yet.

Paterno created the myths but Spanier was the one most responsible for putting that narrative out there. Through his time on the infractions committee and the close personal relationship he had with Emmert & Ray he was able to put the entire PSU athletic program on a pedestal as some shining example for everyone else to follow. So when all that [Mark May] went down in 2011 the NCAA felt like they had been deceived and it's most likely the reason they lowered the boom on psu even though they were conflicted on the potential optics of overreach. The truth is had any serious investigative journalist with access to the program done some sniffing around they would found many of the hidden truths we now know about.

I don't think that Spanier was the one responsible for Joesus' phony image. Joesus' image as a saint was out there long before Spanier got to PSU. Even before the scandal hit in 2011, the PSU boards claimed that Spanier resented Joesus' popularity with the alumni and that Spanier wanted Joesus to retire. I can't imagine Spanier had much of a positive opinion of Joesus when Joesus told him to eff off for merely suggesting that Joesus consider retiring and also threatened to stop raising money for the university if Vicky Triponey was allowed to punish any of his football players.

If you remember, Spanier's impassioned defense in the hours immediately after the scandal broke was for Schultz and Curley, not Joesus. Spanier was also the one who canceled Joesus' press conference shortly before the BoT shit-canned Joesus.

Disagree, and I think you missed the point. Spanier may not have liked Paterno getting all the attention at PSU or the fact that he was for all intent and purpose calling the shots but he was perfectly willing to pimp out the entire success with honor bs to his buddies on the NCAA infraction committee. He had no problem telling Ray and Emmert that PSU was THE model program that all others should emulate. He had no issue advising Emmert that JT deserved the 5 year suspension after the tat scandal. The Triponey example is horrible. How did that turn out? Spanier told Triponey to take a hike after Paterno took a stance and he did it with no remorse because she was a threat the image.

Spanier fired Triponey under orders from Paterno. Paterno threw Spanier out of his house at the mere mention of setting up a succession. Spanier decided that not turning Sandusky in would be more humane after it was decided by Paterno. Spanier may have been all in on pumping up the already existing Paterno myth for his own benefit, but he didn't do it, like anything else in State College, without the express wishes of Joesus.

Here is a link to a BWI thread in which the Pedsters discuss who their biggest rival is. Ohio St. wins the Pedster poll going away, with no rival far outpacing every other choice. I know that the reason Pitt didn't win this vote handily is due to elitism from the Pedsters. But for the life of me, I can't see how the answer is anything other than Pitt.

one of the great disappointments with the B1G is their insistence on maintaining the "Big 2" of tOSU and UM. While we have a better record against tOSU than UM in the last ten years, we are still relegated to being a second tier B1G team. That has caused us to not develop a rivalry. So I don't think we have one.

Well, damn. 10 years, and they're, what, 3-7 against Ohio State? If that doesn't make a rivalry, I don't know what does.
How about you can get a couple dozen years where the winner of that game is conference champion 75% of the time? Ohio State has played Penn State a couple of dozen times, and yeah - their 4 conference championships in that time came after beating Ohio State. But Ohio State probably won twice that number of championships (or more) in that time, and they didn't require beating Penn State. That tells me that it's not a big deal for Ohio State to beat Penn State. But it IS a big deal for Penn State to beat Ohio State.
