Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Go to buckeyeplanet, and "Ped Staters are all cultists" talk is rampant, among a bunch of fans who generally are convinced Jim Tressel did nothing at all wrong and seem to derive 100% of their life's joy out of Buckeye football.
That's a pretty stupid and innacurate generalization.

I was upset that:

1. The infractions in question were pretty ridiculous, similar to the AJ Green suspension.

2. Ohio State got hammered despite turning themselves in and cooperating.

I don't recall ever thinking Tressel was innocent. I also recall getting over it within a few months and moving on.

Edit: I also remember mocking that SI article that painted Tressel as a horrible cheater running a rogue program. When a rigged raffle two decades ago at a 1-AA school make the top 5 worst things a coach has ever done, I think he's fairly clean (although obviously not perfect).

Regarding JT, I loved him and could not believe what went down that year. But once we learned about the lack of honesty, I knew he had to go. I remember there being two factions on this board, the "not all in" faction and then the other side. On the whole we did move on relatively quickly as compared to some other Fanbases, but it sure helps when a guy like Urban Meyer comes in and makes the program even better.

But we still have people who get riled up about the sanctions in relation to the tattoos, which indicates some people don't get that it was JTs lack of honesty that was a real problem, and the tats were just the catalyst for the fail. So, we still have some level of misguided fandom as well. I remember LJB put together a pretty solid write up here that was an honest assessment of JTs years, he certainly took some risks that were overlooked. Some folks here didn't like LJBs take on it, but again, at least both sides were represented in terms of JTs ultimate legacy.

All that said, Ohio State hasn't been a perfect program over the years. It certainly hasn't been overly shady either. Comparing the truly awful circumstances in Happy Valley with anything else in the landscape of CFB, with the exception of Baylor, is akin to comparing apples to land mines.

The infraction in question was Tressel lying to the NCAA. That's not ridiculous & contradicts the idea that Ohio State cooperated. Ohio State cooperated after they found out Tressel didn't cooperate in the first place. If it had only been the "free tattoos" I would agree with you.

Yes, I agree with this. Tressel lied to the NCAA and that's why he was punished/fired.

I don't think you two are in disagreement. JT lied to the university too, and the emails were discovered internally and turned over to the ncaa. Our turning ourselves in and subsequent cooperation made the difference between failure to monitor and lack of institutional control. Whatever I think of JT (and it's not much) his transgressions absolutely pale in comparison to the disgusting decisions and actions of JoePed and his cronies.

Agree totally, but there are a few here who always scoff at the whole Tressel thing as being about free tattoos. The free tattoos were not the reason for the penalties.

Pedturno's inaction was disgusting. There really isn't any comparison.

It sounds like we are all pretty close in the assessment of the failures at tOSU, so perhaps now we can get back to the other-planet-like disdain for the cult. I actually like 409fold, but he would be well served to understand that few boards or parties external to Penn State will ever be conned into believing that Paterno didn't, at the very least, fail to protect the interests of minors. And obviously he possibly was far worse than that.

I really feel like PSU would find it far easier to move on if they fell into the right coach and started winning again.

So, I think you're completely full of [Mark May] when you somehow insinuate this is MY fault. I DO do my part. Screw you for insinuating otherwise.

If you're up for it, I'll bet $1000 to $10 right now that there is NO "honor Joe" day in 2016 at Penn State. And neither will there be one in 2017, or 2018, or 2019, .........
I forgot about that! HAHAHA.
