Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Do you hate the sound of the lion roar in Beaver Stadium?

http://bwi.forums.rivals.com/thread...oad-environment-vatech-compared-to-psu.17256/

I do, but it's because it's annoying, and they play it too much. I also hate the exact same roar at Northwestern, and I'm sure I've heard it at stadiums outside the Big Ten. If you need the stadium loudspeakers to be loud to get your fans to be loud, your football probably isn't very good.

OSU has nothing to counter our lion roar when we play in the "shoe". I mean really... what possible sound effect could they use? THUD... the sound of a poisonous nut falling from a tree??

I'm pretty sure that in 2013 Ohio State used the sound effect of a touchdown to scare Penn State. They played it 9 times and their coach went crying to the NFL.

I hate the lion roar, but for the same reasons you mentioned. It's not scary...it's annoying as shit. It's the same reason I hate the turkey gobble at VT and the USC and Texas bands and any number of other things I can't think of off the top of my head. If you play something after every play, it gets annoying. And it loses meaning.

James Franklin happy at Penn State, not a 'mess' like prior jobs

James Franklin won't be leaving Penn State anytime soon. (USATSI)
Penn State had the same head football coach for nearly 50 years, but its subsequent full-time coach, Bill O'Brien, fell a few days short of even completing two full years with the Nittany Lions. Fans in State College want to know that James Franklin is planning to stick around, to which he responds, "Where else would you go?"

Franklin discussed the Penn State job, his coaching history and more in a recent interview with Scout.com's Penn State website, Fight on State. He dismissed the idea of pursuing a career in the NFL, unlike his predecessor, and highlighted the opportunity that comes with taking over a prestigious program like Penn State.

“I'm excited because I'm finally at a place that we can stay and we can build it the right way,” Franklin said, via Scout.com. “I've never (had) that. I've always showed up at a place and it was kind of a mess and then we had to clean up the mess, and right when we got it cleaned up, ended up having to leave to go to the next job for a number of reasons -- more than anything an opportunity."

In nearly two decades of coaching, Franklin has been with 11 different programs and never spent more than five seasons in one place without a change. I predict that pattern will end for him at Penn State.

The toughest part of that job, navigating the program through NCAA probation, will be over soon and the Nittany Lions will be back to contending for Big Ten titles.

Franklin may have jumped around on his way to State College, but there are not many places in the country that can provide the right ingredients for him to succeed like Penn State. He says the NFL, the ever enticing "next challenge" for many successful college coaches, is of no interest for now, so fans can feel good about Franklin sticking around for a while.*

* At least longer than Bill O'Brien but probably not as long as Joe Paterno

I too hate their rhythmic roaring sound. It's literally like nails on a chalkboard to my ears.

In the case of Northwestern, it's about the lack of fans to make noise. At Penn State, it's the need to be obnoxious. With the Bengals it's to give the drunks a chance to order another beer.

Personally, it's the USC band playing that damn gladiator music from a B movie after every down.

I can't stand the roar either, whether it be Ped State, Northwestern, etc...

But I've seen plenty of people in Ohio Stadium not get loud until they hear the sound of the bell on third downs. Is that not the same thing? Sorry to play devils advocate there.

I can buy that. But personally, like ORD said (or maybe it was someone else - I'd rather type out this long sentence explaining that I really don't want to scroll up to see who it was), the Lion's Roar is like scratching a chalkboard to my ears. The Hell's Bells bell on third down very much isn't. I'd be willing to bet that the fact that I like the bells compared to the roar is a product of the fact that I'm a fan of the Buckeyes - not of the teams that use the roar.

and there is the point, third down, not every time they get a stop after a 3 yd gain on 1st down.

No, the original point from Zurp was "If you need the stadium loudspeakers to be loud to get your fans to be loud". That is what the third down bell does for "some" fans. Seen it to many times to count. Your point about the number of times each is plaued is valid, but so say that was the point I was addressing would be incorrect. Like I said in my reply to Zurp, I was just playing devils advocate and like I said I can't stand the "roar" over the loud speakers whether it is Ped State, Nortwestern, random state directional school, etc...
