How would that have helped him? Anyone can drop down a level and keep playing. That's not an ideal path for a top draft pick.
There's also the matter of displaying the same flaws as a true frosh that were ignored because of his age. It wasn't the offense that caught up with him. It was the pattern of his decision making.
That includes choosing Penn State in the first place.
Yet. He was on a better, more advanced path taking coaching from O'Brien. (National Coach of the Year?) That wasn't a bad decision. That was a good decision. And we can assume that his parents are involved in his decisions about a school and coach choice.
His decisions on field are another matter. But it looked like O'Brien was helping him there. By all accounts the current staff is not equal to the former staff.
So, he's made a bad decision about sticking with this staff and school when the offensive line can't protect him and the coaching staff can't help development him.
