I had not seen this before, but this 2012 e-mail from from PSU Board member Paul Suhen to acting university President Rodney Erickson is fascinating. Suhey urged Erickson to remove the Joesus statue because he was worried that leaving up the statue would anger the NCAA and bring the Death Penalty to the football program. The e-mail seems to pretty clearly illustrate that the BoT was looking to protect the university and save the football program in light of the pile of Mark May that Paterno dropped in their laps.

Of course, The Cult views fear of the Death Penalty as cowardly.

" Rod,

Just wanted to add to my e-mail to you from last night regarding the Paterno statue. Do whatever you need to do to keep the NCAA from giving us the 'Death Penalty.' I don't care if you have to bring your own bulldozer over and drag it to your farm, do it! This has to be your top priority because of the ramifications of an adverse decision from the NCAA and the far-reaching effects of that decision far outweigh any other issue facing the university from our students, alumni. press, public, or Paterno supporters. Thanks for all you do.

Erickson's e-mail back to Suhey was the folowing:

"That's precisely what I'm trying to do, Paul. Was on the phone earlier this morning with Mark Emmert."

Given that there are multiple ways of testing a students intellectual capacity and having survived both Woody's football coaching course and his military history course I can only say that his courses were pure rote memory. There was a quiz each Friday - 10 question on current events followed by 10 questions on the football material covered - in the football class. The final was all about football and your notebook. Attendance was mandatory and meant you were in the room and in a seat when he locked the door. Otherwise you were SOL. Pretty much the same for the military history class with a bitch of a midterm and final. So listen, record, regurgitate, just about the lowest level measure of "learning."

The learning came in accepting the discipline as a value and listening to the things he said that were off the script - like suddenly quoting a Keats' poem - or comparing holding the Elsenborn Ridge to stopping the 54 Michigan team on the 1.

I will also remember that in May of 1970, while the faculty members who had urged students to riot suddenly disappeared, Hayes had the courage to meet with the leaders on the Oval and debate with them.

Now what the hell did Joe teach besides football and when did he meet with students to debate an ethical issue?

Act like it. Get there and listen to, as well as engage, members of your BoT that are discussing concerns over a real issue.

Those excuses are all amateur hour. They are the equivalent of 'the dog ate my homework'."

I really want somebody in charge to pull the old "Fine....you think you can do better?" routine and hand over the keys to one of these fuckwits. My Bloomsburg degree would be worth 100 times what theirs is after they're done with the place.
