Game Thread Penn State at tOSU, Oct 26, 8 ET, ABC

If I remember 1994 right, and it was a while ago, Vrabel and Fickell were both young players on that team. Penn State had stolen a good running back from Ohio who was good in college but was a bust in the pros. Penn State lost the mythical national championship based on style points against some Big 10 team, maybe Indiana. Cooper called practice for tOSU the day after the PSU game, and somehow, through total loss of any feeling of entitlement, tOSU beat tSUN that year, and Fickell made is famous interception. So, in summary, the tOSU/PSU game this year MUST have meant a lot to Luke and Mike.

Not much to say about this game....

1. The Buckeyes' nine touchdown drives averaged 65 yards in length. The defense set up a short field (33 yards) with a fumble recovery, and Dontre Wilson's 49-yard kick-off return gave the offense another short field (45 yards), but five of the touchdown drives were over 70 yards, with two being over 80 yards. It's rare when a team scores 63 points with little field position help from their defense and special teams.

2. In five games this season, Carlos Hyde has 88 carries for 590 yards (6.7 average) and 7 touchdowns. Those are pretty good numbers, but where Hyde really excels is in his consistency. Carlos does not have a carry for negative yards all year, only four of his carries have gone for zero yards, and five carries for one yard. At the other end of the spectrum, Hyde has only three carries of over twenty yards. Here's a complete breakdown:

0 yards........4
1 yard.........5
2-3 yards.....23
4-6 yards.....21
7-9 yards.....18
10-19 yards...14
20-29 yards....2
30-39 yards....1

Hyde's constant pounding the middle of the defense must take a physical, and psychological, toll on the opponent.

3. The Buckeyes scored on their first drive, and then the defense took over. For a while, it looked like the same old, same old for the defense, as Penn State marched 69 yards in 13 plays, including a 3rd-and-11 conversion. However, on the 14th play of the drive, Pitt Brown intercepted a pass in the end zone. That play seemed to spark the defense, and they played clearly their best game of the year. The defense had four sacks and forced three turnovers, and in general suffocated Penn State's offense. If the defense can keep up the pressure for the remainder of the season, Ohio State will be virtually unstoppable ... and I'm not just talking about their Big Ten opponents.

4. Chris Fields had another touchdown last night, giving him five for the season on just eleven receptions.

5. A few years ago, I thought that Marcus Hall's career was over, as he had both academic and motivational issues. It's a good thing that he turned himself around, because he is the key to Ohio State's power running game. Marcus looks like a freight train when he pulls to the left.

6. Penn State has never been a rival of Ohio State, but at least they had a somewhat respectable record against the Buckeyes. Entering last night's game, Penn State had a 7-13 record (.350 winning percentage) against Ohio State in Big Ten play, which trailed only Nebraska (1-1, .500 winning percentage) and Michigan (8-12, .400 winning percentage) since 1993 when Penn State joined the conference. But after the 63-14 mauling, and with more lean years on the horizon, Penn State may finally have entered into the "Little Eight" category.

7. A lot of media pundits had Ohio State on "Upset Alert" last night. How many of them are eating their words today?

I agree here LJB. I was concerned about Penn State and their game plan and in their 1st possession
I was worried................. but the interception by "Pitt" Brown" lifted my spirits from there on and I
had a strong feeling that we could score again putting more pressure on Penn State.

The defense just has to believe in themselves from now on. We have the respect from all of our opponents the rest of the way and you can bet they will be coming after us, big time. We have to be in a focus mode for each game. We can score at will but OUR DEFENSE will have to be on the same page. The defense and offense have to mesh as one - as a TEAM - not as two separate entities.
