Penn State 38, Illinois 24 (Final)

Unless Daryll Clark made massive off-season improvements, I am shocked that the PSU coaches insisted on sticking with Morelli last year. He is mobile, accurate, and the new offense seems to be very, very good at getting receivers open down field.

Color me very impressed with Penn State's offensive scheme and execution.

Some more perspective is needed. Illinois is one of the worse defenses in the Big Ten. And State Penn was playing at home.

This PSU team still isn't anywhere near as good as the 2001 or 1994 teams YET....

And we have to remember that Illinois let Mizzou essentially go up and down the field on them in that game too. Illinois may not have that good of a defense if you don't make stupid mistakes and turn the ball over.

I didn't see the 1994 team, but I saw the 2002(I think you mixed up the year a little). As far as defense this probably won't compare to the 2002 team. PSU lost Sean Lee and Jerome Hayes and that's going to hurt. It may not be a dominant defense, Tom Bradley always put something together.

As far as offense, this one is much more balanced and deep. We've never had this many WRs. Our #1 receiver was out with a hamstring injury this week and one of the WRs was a freshman. Larry Johnson (he averaged +8 ypc) was a stud and he couldn't do much when we played any good run-defensive teams because teams weren't real worried about our 2002 passing game.

But this year's OSU team is very strong and should still be the favored team at the Shoe. I think OSU should be very worried about ILL, they are dangerous. 2 tds lead and they still had me sweating. Not saying they're better than OSU, but you guys need to be on all cylinders.

I am not sure I agree. Last season, it took Juice having the game of his life, OSU playing poorly, and and a no-call on an obvious fumble for Illinois to barely scratch out a victory against us. A year later, they've lost a lot more talent than we have, evidenced by their less than stellar defense thus far.

Honestly, I would have thought that PSU's offense would have put up more than 31 points on Illinois (I'm not counting the special teams TD), especially considering the game was at PSU.

I'm not sure you saw the game, but there were points left on the field. We were down near the red zone and JoePa went conservative with Stefon Green up the middle. If we tried that with Royster(he was a little banged up), we would have gotten it. I'm not the coach, so I don't know. But I think Joe wanted his team to have some adversity (put some pressure on the defense). I was scared because I wouldn't have taken any chances and would try to blow out ILL if I could. Kevin Kelly can make some pretty long field goals but Joe didn't go for field goals twice. If DWheels didn't run that one back for 6 pts, I think the offense would go down and score one any way. The last possession was pretty much in the red-zone and they knelt down with 1.5 minutes left.

Just like you guys against Minn. Did you think that was all OSU could score against the Gophers at the Shoe? Tressel is kind of like Joe, he likes to win with defense. The scores of the 4 previous games got so out of hand because Joe were letting the team practicing 2 min drills, 4th down conversions and the offense scored. He actually had plays call in the 4th Q of those games that did not play to the strength of the 2nd team or the score would've been even more lopsided.

Yeah....Paterno (as if it was his call) was really letting it up on the pansies you played OOC.

Did you see the games or you just know everything? That was my opinion when I saw the games. If Joe pulled the starters out before the half, what would you call that? Then he put the starters back in with 2 minutes before half time so he can run the score up when they already have a 5 tds lead?? Same with running Stefon Green up the middle in short yardage. He's not a power back.

And keep talking about OOC pansies as if OU, Troy and Youngstown are part of the Big10. We had Bama scheduled but they(Bama, because of probation) wanted to move the games back a couple years at the last minute. No one liked PSU to play Coastal Carolina but do you think they would have trouble with OU, Troy, or Youngstown? Syracuse was decent when they were being added on the schedule and OrSU was top 25 the past 2 seasons. OrSU may not be bad team, they out-gained Stanford by almost 200yds in the other loss.

If you can access espn360.com, watch some games before you dish out opinions. I'm not at all knowledgeable about football but I didn't go around trashing OSU about the loss. That's a lot more I can say for some of "OSU's fans".

You need to understand that folks on this board have a good degree of hatred for your program. So things said on here are rarely positive. Add to that, the fact that PSU has stunk it up big time recently and you'll find absolutely zero respect for your Lioness'. Meanwhile, PSU, to all of our surprise, is obviously considerably better than any of us Buckeye fans suspected. Based upon your team being absolutely lousy last year and then losing your starting QB, most here assumed another dismal year. Now PSU has come out looking solid...our fanbase has yet to adjust to that and will not adjust to that unless PSU beats the Bucks...soundly. Any other result will only end in more kitty name calling. It's a Buckeye board....it's what happens on the other team's board. And considering the almost unnatural amount of loathing for PSU around here, it's worse for you than other teams.

Yup, it's a pretty fierce rivalry, we just refuse to acknowledge that one can exist beyond Michigan. That will cloud many things.

By all means, txp, stick up for your squad, and keep using facts and details to back up your arguments. That's the standard we expect around here, both from outsiders and our own. As long as it is merely heated and not personal, the debate is welcome. We do enjoy having good outsiders on this board, and hopefully you'll stick around.
