Penn State 38, Illinois 24 (Final)

So, a few things learned from this game.

The Illini and the Lions can put up points. Our defense has to get better.
The Illini's defense has to get better. We will put up some points.

The Lion's defense can get to the QB, but lost contain at times vs. Juice Williams. This bodes will for Pryor.
The Lion's offense is as advanced as I've seen it in my time observing PSU football (less than a decade). They will score points on our defense.

The back end of our schedule will be very challenging.

Illinois worked the option and variations very well against that defense.
Every time the Illinois had back field fakes they got positive yardage. When they didn't the Nit defense stuffed them. And there are holes in that secondary. The strength of the Nits is their offense. If we had to play them this week we would be trying to keep up with scoring. Even though Illinois defense isn't what it was last year. The diversity of the Nit offense is impressive. But, we know from history the Nits play different away from the Beav. They will be on the receiving end of a crazy crowd when they come for a night time visit.

This PSU team still isn't anywhere near as good as the 2001 or 1994 teams YET....

And we have to remember that Illinois let Mizzou essentially go up and down the field on them in that game too. Illinois may not have that good of a defense if you don't make stupid mistakes and turn the ball over.

The strength of PSU this year is their OL. They have a mobile QB and a power runner behind that line. Williams seems to be stepping up a little bit, but I'm not worried about that WR corp just yet. Their defense is nowhere near where they were in '05, when they had Kennedy and the slew of LB/DE hybrids. I think we'll hand them this year.
