Penn State 17, NOTRE DAME 41 (Final)

ND has been going to the student section and saluting the students for years. They just added the Alma Mater this year. CW must have liked the idea.

I guess my question is what was Weis' purpose for instituting this tradition? Maybe they should have had the players learn the words to the song before doing so. Almost every close up shot of the students, players and Weis and his kid either showed them laughing, mumbling, not singing at all or talking to the camera. In fact the only time I saw people actually move their lips were for the last couple of words. Contrast that with the OSU team singing Carmen, Ohio sometime. The difference is obvious.

As far as running up the score, they pulled the 1st string offense starting the 4th quarter.
No they didn't... 4th qtr 34-3 the starters were still in... running the score up to 41-3. The ND backups ran a whopping THREE plays on the final drive of the game. Who knows, maybe Weis was embarrassed about his 7 point offensive outing (not counting the flag-saving drive) the week before, but they certainly did not pull the first string offense until the very end.

Thank you for telling it straight.
The 4th and Goal from the 1-yard line with 5 minutes to go in the quarter, instead of taking the field goal was, in my view, an even more glaring example of Weis' coaching "style." That one did not depend on an "on-the field" call, unlike the earlier fake punt.
Twice within one drive Weis underscores his rep - in a negative manner.

I didn't see the 4th quarter of that game, so I'm only going off what you describe. I think kicking a field goal is MORE like running up the score than trying to score a TD.

it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation... either way, you get called out...

i have a better solution: how about Penn State doesn't play like a first time pop warner team, and maybe they aren't in this position...

Well actually, the over the top calls came late in the 3rd quarter. But, it was completely apparent that State Penn was on life support even at that time.

There is that now, isn't there.

Sorry, I think it was fairly early in the 4th quarter when they pulled the 1st teamers, a few 1st team defenders stayed in another series (D-backs I think), but after they went up 41-3. Next series 2nd string O went in, and you're right, they only got 1 crack at the ball because the 2nd string defense never really stopped the PSU offense. They ended up giving up the two TDs that quarter. Anyway, the 2nd string offense went in around the 13 or 12 minutes left in the game, so my guess is they would have played most the 4th quarter if our defense had a little more depth to them and played more agressively like the 1st team.

I agree...This is Penn State, not Rice. PSU has the same level of talent. There is no excuse for them getting blown out. Now if this was some small school cremepuff, then I don't like coaches to run up the score...
