Peach Bowl: #1 Georgia vs #4 tOSU, Sat 12/31 8 ET on ESPN

The pressure they put on Hooker that game was insane. D line ate and the secondary got to keep everything in front because of it.

The dline was one thing, but Georgia's secondary was very hands on. Physical at the line and at the top of the route. Tennessee struggled to respond at all phases with. In a similar fashion, something Buckeye receivers didn't handle or respond very well to against Iowa in the first half.

This is a mentality we've previously praised the Silver Bullets for and criticized how "soft" opposing offenses were. Oregon comes to mind, both times. A bit before the Fiesta Bowl against Texas and then against scUM and USC.

We're going to develop a quality picture about the mental makeup of this entire offense (outside of MHJ) early and often against the Dawg defense. And that also gives us tells of our coaches as well. How badly do you want a free release and not to be touched vs how badly are you willing to fight contact and "earn" your route as opposed to just "having it".

They lost to Michigan because of defensive woes. That said, a secondary reason was because he wasn't quite up to his usual absurd self as a pure passer. They didn't need his feet, they needed the #1 pick accuracy and decision making. It was a team loss though, but his lack of scrambles was not where he needs to be better.

The most absurd part about the "why doesn't the stiff hipped, cheat code accuracy passer pull it down for more 2-5 yd rushes and collision" bloviations is the intentional misrepresentation of how Fields and Barrett were treated by these same personalities.

Fields is the most talented QB since Lamar, and so much more well rounded.
His scrambling was derided much like CJ until very late in his final season.

Then there's JT Barrett, who received more anger from some "fans" than the wolverines he slayed.

Exactly, yes. If anything, CJ hasn't been as sharp and that's led to misses and uncharacteristic throws. If they beat Georgia, it's not going to be due to CJ scrambling 8 times for 34 yards, it's going to be because he's in Rose Bowl god mode, trusting his WRs and throwing into tight windows downfield.

Agreed and it does not all fall on Stroud or the defense. How many points did the Bucks score in the second half?
Right it's an all around failure.

And even with as much flak as Day deserves as the playcaller and head man, he had some brilliant calls that should have worked.

The fake punt was an easy run for 20, and probably an easy throw to Emeka, 1v1 vs WR Henning who had 25 yds to close, and just as much space on either side to protect laterally. Good luck with that Henning.

That terrific PBU by Sanristil wasn't about Stover. Yes he needs to be stronger than a slot corner, but on that play, Day called a fake jet sweep. The playaction of that is Marvin was streaking wide open in the far end. The d was confused by the fake sweep, and emeka was wide open also in the flat. But the guard missed his protection and CJ was rushed, and still threw a good pass. Most corners don't make that play, but like most of the game, Michigan made the plays they needed to and OSU didn't.

The problem was "do your jobs" that day, and it was a failure across the board. This wasn't 2021 where Michigan bullied a finesse team in the snow. Sure they took over in the end, but it wasn't about strength or want to. It was about execution. They earned it by playing a lot better.

And no amount of QB keepers would have fixed that.

Justin Fields may have beaten Michigan because he would have bought time on scramble drills. But give CJ the running game of JK/Weber, and they blow Michigan out in the first half.
Troy Smith makes it competitive but isn't a slam dunk to win this.
Dwayne Haskins does not win this game.
Craig Krenzel, Todd Boeckman do not either.
Not sure what to do with JT, but he's not the ideal candidate to beat Michigan and Georgia.

Interested in folks thoughts on the positives/negatives of having Wilson with us through the playoffs.

Positive to me is familiarity and consistency with everyone and everything.

Negative to me is in his mind is he already gone? It’s a struggle to do one job in this instance let alone two.

Does the rest of the staff step in/up especially if Frye is going to be the new OC as rumored?
Hard to say. It worked out well enough when Titty Bar Tom stayed through the playoff after taking the Houston job.

There are certain intangibles some of the guys above have, I believe you're selling quite a few of our past dawgs short. Copium is a helluva drug, Dwayne Haskins and Troy Smith make all the passes CJ can't when he goes cold. Krenzel was a winner.

Wasn't this largely the problem for most of the season, especially when it came to critical plays on critical drives? And then to hear Day in the post-game presser make excuses about how it's an unreasonable / impossible expectation for every player to execute his assignment on every play. Yet, this is really what "execution" is about.

Let me know when some more positive reading is on the site. Everything from recruiting to the CFP is the world is ending. I'm more disappointed than most in the outcome of this season, but I need some light at the end of the tunnel lol.
take a wander over to the paint chippers forum or the "staring at these..." thread.
hang in there. it gets better. the place can be a kind of an echo chamber.

We can dissect “the game” play by play and show where we came up short. Michigan kicked our ass in the end and it wasn’t close.

To me, the scarier thing is how horrible we were at times, with elite talent, against way less talented teams.

It’s hard to pinpoint why we struggled so badly, but we all recall Northwestern, Maryland, PSU……..

We’ve just been clumsy a lot…..I’m not close enough to program to know why, but something is up……we are sloppy. And I’m stating this from the offensive side of ball….

I don't think there's a negative. If we scheme / coach / play / execute as we've done most of the last half of the season, we'll pee down our pants at some critical point.

The positive is that Wilson might be able to convince Day to let him run the offense and we'll really see a different group.

And *this* may be the explanation to the bermuda triangle of offensive productivity that @Oh8ch was pointing at in the first half of the season - ie Day and Wilson were taking turns calling plays by the quarter. Conspiracy.

Maybe there's something behind the sly grin on Wilson's face after the ND game when he was asked about running the pistol formation. Maybe he was smirking because it's what Day was insisting on, as opposed to something he really thought was necessary or useful.
