Paul Haynes (DB Coach Minnesota Golden Gophers)

Kent State hires Paul Haynes as football coach: MAC Insider

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- There will be a homecoming Tuesday as Kent State sources confirmed Monday that Paul Haynes will be introduced at 2:30 p.m. in the Student Center as the next head football coach for the Golden Flashes.

Haynes, a former KSU alum, was defensive coordinator at Arkansas last season, with previous stops at Michigan State and Ohio State.

Haynes, a defensive back and former walk-on who played for coaches Dick Crum and Pete Cordelli, spent all day Monday interviewing for the job before getting the offer early in the evening. He was an assistant head coach at Kent (1999-2000) under Dean Pees and co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State (2011) under Luke Fickel, before moving to Little Rock.

The hiring ended a day with some suspense as the team and outgoing coach Darrell Hazell were practicing in Dix Stadium for the upcoming Jan. 6 GoDaddy.com Bowl. Privately, several current assistants said it was an unique situation, working under a coach who has already left for another job, while waiting to see if they will be retained by the new coach, or hired by Hazell to go to Purdue.

"I'm sure they're waiting to see who will get hired," Hazell said after practice. "That's always the case."

Now it should be known pretty soon which members of the staff are staying, and who might be leaving.

Hazell said he plans to speak with the Kent staff individually for possible openings with the Boilermakers. Hazell, who worked with Haynes at Ohio State, had nothing but praise for him.

"Paul is a good guy. I really like him. I don't want to put the cart before the horse, but he can relate well with the kids, if he does get hired. He'll bring some of the same things that we do now with him. Obviously, he's an alum. He's a really good guy."

That's awesome all these Tressel guys are getting head coaching jobs. Dantonio, Hazell, and Haynes. It's only a mater of time before Fickell gets one.

I hope Luke's wife continues to love her job, replacing assistants is a major source of stress for Urb

As well as an alum Haynes was an assistant at KSU during the Pees era before he moved to OSU. Probably not as good of a coach as Hazell, but he's a good fit that will hopefully stay at KSU for a while.

I would say money could be an issue for Fickell, but if Hazell got double what Hope was getting at Purdue anything is possible. No way Fickell no way would a non-BCS school beat Luke's current salary. If he wants to be the next HC at tOSU I would like to see him stick with Urban for 3+ years and then move on to get HC experience. I few years of being the head guy someplace would help him hit the ground running when Urban retires. As a DC Luke seemed to get better as the season progressed.

Paul Haynes glad to be back at Kent State, coach his alma mater

In a scrimmage a week before the opening game of his senior season in high school, St. Francis DeSales running back Paul Haynes took a handoff, darted through the line, made a sharp cut?and blew out his knee.

It was 1986 in Columbus, Ohio, where Haynes dreamed of?what else??playing for the Buckeyes. The injury ended any chance of that happening; he went on to play defensive back at Kent State. But you know what?
Paul Haynes made the jump from Arkansas' defensive coordinator to Kent State as a head coach. (AP photos)

?I probably wasn?t good enough to play at Ohio State anyway,? Haynes said in a conversation with Sporting News during his first days as a head coach, at his alma mater.

You want a reason to like this guy right off the bat? He knows he?s not perfect and that he doesn?t have all the answers. As he puts it: ?Look, I?m just a realist.?

Haynes was part of the mess that was Arkansas football in 2012. In his only season in Fayetteville as defensive coordinator, the Razorbacks ranked 12th in the SEC in total D. Worse for Haynes, given his background as a player and as a defensive backs coach (including a six-season run working for Jim Tressel at Ohio State), the team ranked dead last in the SEC?and 113th nationally?against the pass.

It didn?t reflect very positively on the guy who, after Bobby Petrino was fired, was believed by many to be the leading in-house candidate for the job that eventually went to John L. Smith.

?It was a challenging season,? Haynes said, ?but I think it made me a better coach.?

Kent State has had just two winning seasons in the past 30.

Just sayin': Haynes was an excellent DB and Co-DC/S coach here at Ohio State under Tressel; however, Urban didn't retain him when he arrived in 2012. He was an DC/DB coach at Arkansas before taking the HC job at Kent State. OK, he didn't cut it as a HC at Kent State; but neither has anyone else in the last 30 years.

He's had some recent medical issues (https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...medical-leave-days-before-opener/105040036/); however, I think he woild be a great hire as Co-DC/S to replace Schiano. Larry Johnson could also be promoted to Co-DC/DL.
