Paul Haynes, defensive backs coach

On Purdue wide receiver Dorien Bryant

"He's a little bit like Teddy (Ginn Jr.) and ?Gonzo? (Anthony Gonzales) put together. Gonzo ran great routes, but no one knew how fast Gonzo was. Gonzo ran great routes and he made people miss. He looks like he's got great speed. He is very elusive and (Dustin) Keller is the same way. Keller is very elusive. Every time you see him catch the ball, he's doing something extra for yards after catch, so our tackling is going to be key."

On the defensive backs play so far this season

"I think we're better. I think we still have a long way to go. We still have young guys that need to understand things and get football smart, keep doing the things we need to do to get better. We're not there yet by any means, but they're doing the things we're asking them to do and they're trying and give great effort.?

On Kurt Coleman and Malcolm Jenkins taking on different roles in the defensive backfield

"I think they've handled it pretty well. Kurt has stepped in for the first time. He's doing a real good job. Malcolm we have at corner and safety. He's taking that role on very well. So, like I said, we're pleased, but it's just like anything and we need to keep improving."

Haynes all for overcoming OSU adversity

FOX Toledo Sports Director

PERRYSBURG, Ohio (WUPW) - Before Ohio State safeties coach Paul Haynes spoke to area high schoolers about becoming better people, he spoke to the media about the Buckeyes overcoming adversity.

"They haven't changed with what they want to accomplish," Haynes said about the Buckeye players. "So the thing that happens in adversity is you pull tighter together and you work even harder, so I think that's the thing you're seeing with our kids is that they're doing the extra."

For possible future Buckeyes though, the lack of coaching staff continuity past this season could be a factor. Haynes, though, has a response for that.

"Ohio State is bigger than a coaching staff," he said. "Ohio State is bigger than just one player and things like that. The business school at Ohio State hasn't changed. The education school at Ohio State hasn't changed. So the academics and teh great school that we are and the great university hasn't changed.

"The kids that want to be a part of it and want to be a part of Ohio State will," Haynes continued. "The kids who don't, won't.

"We want kids who want to be there. We don't want to have kids to try to force them to be there. We want the kids who want to be a Buckeye."

Looks like Ohio State assistant Paul Haynes will take Arkansas job. Great coach. Today was last day at Ohio State according to players.

He's a great coach. I think he'll do well at Arkansas

Well crap, we lost a great coach in Haynes. He'll do a great job at Arkansas and I understand taking the DC spot, but he'll be missed and yet another spot that needs filled now.

I am not sure his position will be filled. I base this on almost nothing, but I don't think too many schools have two coaches dedicated exclusively to the secondary.

I think Johnson could slide over and handle safeties (along with the CBs) with little trouble.

In retrospect, is it any wonder that the secondary was one of our most consistently great position with these two guys in charge since 2005/2006?

Oh yeah, and best of luck to him at Arkansas.
