P Jesse Mirco (transfer to Vanderbilt)

Not trying to hate on Mirco at all, but that punt returner screwed up bad. If he fair catches it, they're past the 40 yard line. Then the punt took every right bounce to make it that far.

I'll take it of course, but I haven't been thrilled with Mirco on pinning teams back on the shorter punts so far this year. I know he can do it and maybe I'm off, but I don't think he's been very consistent this year.
I was at the game….that punt was a true knuckleball. I think the returner wasn’t confident that he could catch it due to it moving around as it descended.

Mirco has averaged 44.2 yards per punt this year with a 39.7 yard net average. Even if the returner fair catches that punt it's a 50 yard punt from as deep in the end zone as it could possibly be.
He hasn't always been perfect this year but that punt Saturday was a game changer. I may have some problems with our special teams play (and our special teams coach), but Mirco really isn't part of the problem.
Mirco hasn't been abysmal if you look at the yards per punt in a vacuum, but he has trouble pinning opponents inside the 10 on shorter punts this season and isn't doing as well as he did last year. Looking back at the PSU game, that punt was fantastic even if the returner fair catches it given that his butt was almost against the goalpost when he caught the snap.

But he has started off the year looking much less like the player he did last year. Mirco was a top 15 punter last year. But this year, by the metrics I have looked at (there are only three sites that even track it) he ranks anywhere from a cap of #38 in the country, to a floor of #78 with all stats considered. So that's not the standard at OSU for his position even though I agree he isn't costing us games....I would just like to see him back to his '22 season form.

Agree RB, he's not the greatest this year, but he's 'serviceable'. His what, 72 yard punt was a necessary thing of beauty because it was needed. Maybe it's his Special Teams coaching that's doing it?
