Ozzie Guillen vs. Jay Mariotti

BTW, anyone know if Mariotti is indeed gay? If so I love the quote even more!

I think it's hilarious. Glad to see Guillen treat Mariotti like the arrogant piece of shit he is.

Mariotti seems to be a wannabe Skip Bayless.

I think it's hilarious. To me, a lot of the media are like the internet tough guy types you see on message boards. They can write whatever they want with no fear for retribution. Sometimes they need to be reminded that if they don't have the courage to say it face to face, they should watch what they write. I'm pretty sure that Guillen knows a little bit more about managing a baseball team (he only won the fucking World Series last year), so Mariotti should be careful in his incessant criticism. Guillen is just using the media to execute a classic media maneuver on a member of the media. It's the soundbyte culture. And I fucking despise the White Sox.

Ozzie has been fined (by MLB) an undetermined amount, and ordered to undergo sensitivity training by Selig. And Mariotti's still a piece of shit.

White Sox Manager Fined for Slur

-->NEW YORK — Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was fined Thursday by commissioner Bud Selig and ordered to attend sensitivity training for making derogatory comments about a reporter this week.

In a separate penalty, Guillen was also suspended Thursday along with White Sox pitcher David Riske after the reliever threw at Chris Duncan of St. Louis on Tuesday night.
<!-- hot fix -->

Before that game, the outspoken Guillen went into a profanity-laced tirade against Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti and called him a number of names, including a derogatory term that is often used to describe someone's sexual orientation.

"Ozzie Guillen used language that is offensive and completely unacceptable," Selig said in a statement. "Baseball is a social institution with responsibility to set appropriate tone and example. Conduct or language that reflects otherwise will not be tolerated. The use of slurs embarrasses the individual, the club and the game."

Before Wednesday night's game, Guillen apologized and acknowledged that his use of the word might have offended some _ but he kept up his criticism of the writer.

"I shouldn't have mentioned the name that was mentioned, but I'm not going to back off of Jay," Guillen said, using another profanity to describe Mariotti.

"The word I used, I should have used something different. A lot of people's feelings were hurt and I didn't mean it that way."

Mariotti recently was critical of Guillen's handling of rookie pitcher Sean Tracey, who could be seen distraught in the dugout last week in Texas after Guillen became angry when the White Sox didn't retaliate for catcher A.J. Pierzynski twice being hit with pitches. Tracey was later demoted to the minors.

Riske was suspended three games by the commissioner's office for intentionally throwing at Duncan, and Guillen got a one-game ban. He and Riske were each fined an undisclosed amount by Bob Watson, vice president of on-field operations for Major League Baseball.

Riske's suspension was scheduled to start with Thursday night's home game against the Cardinals, unless the reliever appeals. Guillen was required to serve his penalty Thursday _ there was no appeal process available for him.

Both were ejected in the seventh inning of Chicago's 20-6 victory Tuesday night after the right-hander hit Duncan with a pitch.

The benches had been warned in the bottom of the sixth after St. Louis pitcher Sidney Ponson plunked two White Sox batters with the bases loaded.

Guillen, who led the White Sox to their first World Series title in 88 years last season, has gotten into trouble several times with his comments.
In spring training this year, he apologized to Alex Rodriguez for comments he made in a Sports Illustrated article in which he criticized the Yankees' star for waffling on his choice of countries for the World Baseball Classic.

In his first season, Guillen called umpire Hunter Wendelstedt a liar. Later in the season, Guillen sarcastically referred to Buck Showalter of the Rangers as the best manager in the history of baseball and the guy who invented the game _ all after Showalter questioned Guillen's knowledge of the rules.
Guillen also went off on a profanity-filled tirade last season against former teammate and fellow Venezuelan Magglio Ordonez, who left the White Sox and joined the Detroit Tigers.

I'm not here to validate Ozzie's word choice in any way, but you have to admit that an apology that starts and ends with "Mariotti is a piece of shit" is absolutely classic.

I've gotten to the point where I won't even listen to JT talking to the media. Pure vanilla with absolutely no insight. Wouldn't listen to another interview the rest of my life if every sports guy talked as PC as Tressel does. Guys like Guillen, OTOH, I'd listen to all day. They will give a truer indication of what's really going down. None of these guys are my role models, nor do they have any influence on my moral or political beliefs. They're just coaches and players that are there for my entertainment.

As if the Sox need any more controversy right now, but I haven't heard much about this yet (and probably won't?)....

During Wednesday's rout, the St. Louis Cardinals dugout became convinced a center-field camera at U.S. Cellular Field was tipping pitches to the home team.
I remember the Sox (Garcia or Buerhle) complaining of this same thing last year about the Texas Rangers because they had almost 40 more homers at home than on the road, Guillen more or less told him to shut up though.

Edit: This isn't really on topic, and can be moved to another discussion if people actually feel that this goes on in baseball and would like to discuss it.

Ozzie should of called him a fag piece of shit! I can't stand the "man".

BTW, I am not a big Ozzie fan either. I tend to despise arrogance and that is what I get from Ozzie. I have hated the White Sox for about as long as I have hated the Reds, which will be 42 years in a couple of months. BUT, I absolutley love the way Ozzie manages a baseball team. IMO, watching the Sox play last year was a breath of fresh air in the AL. Some good old fashioned NL ball playing at times; sound in the fundamentals and the "little" things that win games.
