Overhyped: Tenn or Purdue?

AirForceBuck

No mercy
As I am looking towards this Saturdays clash between ND and Tennessee, I got to thinking about how Tenn. started the year #3 in the nation, while they sit now with 4 losses and might not become bowl eligable and their wins all have been close. Riding a 3 game losing skid, they seem as if a loss to Vandy isnt out of the question with a loss to ND. Tennesses (3-4, 2-4) schedule has went as follows:

UAB: 17-10 (Win)
at Florida: 16-7 (Loss)
at LSU: 30-27 (Win)
Ole Miss: 27-10 (Win)
Georgia: 27-14 (Loss)
at Alabama: 6 - 3 (Loss)
S. Carolina: 16-15 (Loss)
Remainder: ND, Memphis, Vandy, Kentucky

Then there is always another team that the Media will hype up based on either scheduling, talent returning or recruiting. This years media mogul was Purdue. Purdue had all the makings of a program set to win the Big Ten. They have no Michigan or OSU, and had both Iowa and ND at home. Purdue (2-6, 0-5) started the year #13 and have became the worst team in the Big Ten. Purdue has went:

Akron: 49-24 (Win)
at Arizona: 31-24 (Win)
at Minnesota: 42-35 (Loss)
Notre Dame: 49-28 (Loss)
Iowa: 34-17 (Loss)
Northwestern: 34-29 (Loss)
at Wisky: 31-20 (Loss)
at PSU: 33-15 (Loss)
Remainder: Mich St., Illinois, Indiana

My question: Who had too much preseason hype?

I think that Purdue may have had all 11 starters returning on defense.

That may not be true, because I only heard that mentioned once. :tongue2:

That makes it even worse, lmao. I respect that they have two recently former QBs starting in the NFL (Brees and Orton) but if you have THAT MANY defensive players returner, wtf is going on over there? lol.

I disagree. They will still beat Illinois by 3 touchdown's. :tongue2:

Tennessee was definitely the most overrated. Purdue was given their ranking and discussion because of the schedule they had. Some people really believed that Tennessee was the 3rd best team in the nation. I don't know who those people were, but they should have been sharing whatever it is they were smoking. Selfish bastards.

Im more or less standing indifferent on this one. I meant "currently" they are at the bottom of the totem pole in the Big Ten. And HOPEFULLY they will beat Illinois, lol.

Purdue by a longshot. Where's that defense I kept hearing about during the preseason?

Tennessee has AT THE LEAST beat LSU and stayed in close games with Bama and Florida. Purdue's beat Akron and Arizona. A team should NOT be ranked high based on schedule alone. If we based how high a team is ranked on how easy their schedule is, scUM should have won the national title last year. And everyone knows how that turned out (LLL)

Not even close. Tennessee at least has had a long track record of being a very good team (worst record since 1988 is 8-5, and they've had a ton of 1- and 2-loss seasons in that stretch, including a national title), and were 10-3 the last two years. On the other hand, Purdue was all but given the Big Ten title in the preseason simply because they got to skip us and Michigan this year, despite having a 7-5 record last year...that is the very definition of being overrated.

Oops. I think I answered a completely different question than the one asked. :!

I guess I was thinking that most people didn't really believe that Purdue was that good. Ah, hell. They both suck. :)

Purdue for all the reasons stated plus:

Mark May of all people insisted in picking them as his pre-season Big 10 favorite that the choice was NOT based on schedule. He said that too many people were making a big deal about their schedule, and he claimed to believe that they were the best team in the Big 10.

When someone as [sarcasm]highly esteemed[/sarcasm] as Mark May says that about you, does that make you more over-rated, or less?

One other team that should be in this conversation with Tennessee and Purdue is Arizona State...they were the chic pick by assclowns at ESPN and other places to knock off USC, and after giving away that game, they may not even make a Bowl game at 4-4, 2-3 so far.

Clemson and Charlie Whitehurst were supposed to make a run at the ACC too, and they also have a losing record.
