Outback Bowl: Wisconsin 17, Tennessee 21 (final)

If Tennessee was the SEC #2, they would have been in the Capital One Bowl.

So, Florida was the SEC #2 from the East when they didn't even when their division?

Musified said:
Yes, Tennessee went to the SEC championship; no, they are not the #2 SEC team.

How you come to the logic of this one is beyond me.

Musified said:
Bottom line, they are evenly matched, and Tennessee came out winning.

That's true. The fourth best Big 10 team took the SEC Championship loser to the line in a very close game.

I don't know exactly what you were expecting, it was BCS #16 vs BCS #18 and the #16 edged out for the win. Big surprise? If Tennessee was the SEC #2, they would have been in the Capital One Bowl. Yes, Tennessee went to the SEC championship; no, they are not the #2 SEC team. If basing it off of the final BCS standings, they are a #4 and Wisconsin is a #3. Bottom line, they are evenly matched, and Tennessee came out winning.
I think it fair to state that, despite getting into the SECCG over UGA, in conference the Vols were the #3 team, with a win-loss record equal to LSU and Georgia.
By the same token Wisconsin was the #4 Big 10 team, in conference.

I think the line was 1.5 or something.
The vBet line uses the opening line on the game. Might have tightened up somewhat with the disclosure of ineligible players, but it opened at Tennessee -3.5.

Psst....Conference standings aren't determined by the BCS.

Bowl picks are not obligated to choose from conference standings either.

Let's not forget the vast superiority of the SEC to the Big Ten. The SEC is so much fatser than the slow Big Ten it was more like the #2/#3 SEC team against the #14 Big Ten team.
I hear this argument as a strawman from Big 10 fans more than I hear it from actual SEC fans.

I'm a Vols fan and I'll be first to admit that they were overrated inside the SEC. Their Georgia win was really the only good win they had. We got crushed by Florida and lost to a badly injured LSU. So yea, I'd put us at a tie for 3rd. Either way, a tie for 3rd in the SEC vs the 4th pick in the Big 10 is not an insurmountable advantage.

I meant they are not the second best team in the SEC, because they aren't.

That's true. The fourth best Big 10 team took the SEC Championship loser to the line in a very close game.
The two are not comparable. The Big 10 doesn't have conferences, and if they did then the entire conference schedule would be different and we would probably have a different set or order of top teams in the Big 10. Wisconsin's conference play was nearly identical to Tennessee's. Losses to the big opponents (TN: LSU, Florida. WIS: OSU, Illinois); one loss to a bit worse team (TN: Alabama. WIS: Penn State); and a win against a big opponent (TN: Georgia. WIS: Michigan). You could find even more similar conference games between the two teams. Wisconsin-Michigan State was like Tennessee-South Carolina. It is fun to watch Big 10 fans actually overrate Tennessee in attempts to validate their own loss, but this one was quite obviously well matched.

Maybe that is because that is all Big Ten fans hear out of the media. Oh I hear plenty of SEC fans talk about this. they may be the idiot load mouths but they are still saying it.

That's probably just selective hearing on their/your part. Announcers and the media used to talk about SEC speed every once in a while. I heard it a few times before the national championship game last year. However, since then I've only heard announcers call it bunk. In fact, they did so on multiple occasions in this game. However, I believe there is credence in the arguement on specific occasions. Other times, there is no difference in speed (or at least not enough to warrant discussion).

I've been in the heart of the SEC/ACC for almost 10 years and I can tell you the speed argument is the first thing thrown my way any time we discuss college football.

I agree that Big Ten fans have taken that torch and carried it to the point that the SEC folks see how ridiculous of an argument it truly is, but there are still plenty of SEC folks who use it as a floatation device.

Hell, I hear about it out here in the Pacific NW. You'd think every Big 10 team was just a bunch of corn-fed goat screwers that have to tazer the goat to be able to catch it.

Colin (I suck PC's schlong) Cowherd is the morning talk-radio, and it's a Big 10 bash fest.

Strangely, that topic seldom comes up on BP...:paranoid:
