Other than OSU, who had the best decade in the Big 10?

I was thinking about this one. Did some research into it, and it doesn't seem like there is a great clear-cut answer.

Between the years of 2000 and 2009 (including the bowl games for the 09 year), who had the best program during the decade outside of Ohio State in the Big 10?

In my opinion (including Ohio State for reference):

Team..........Record.....Bowls...Notable Bowl Wins..................
Ohio State....102-25......5-4....2003, 2004, 2006 Fiesta, 2010 Rose.
Wisconsin......86-49......5-4....2006, 2007 Capital One, 2010 Champs
Iowa...........80-45......5-3....2005 Capital One, 2010 Orange......
Michigan.......81-43......3-5....2008 Capital One...................
Penn State.....77-46......4-2....2006 Orange, 2010 Capital One......
Minnesota......62-62......3-5....2003 Sun, 2004 Music City..........
Purdue.........67-57......2-6....2002 Sun...........................
Michigan St....60-62......2-4....2000 Citrus........................
Northwestern...61-61......0-5.......................................
Illinois.......45-73......0-2.......................................
Indiana........39-78......0-1.......................................

What do you think?

I'm also in total surprise how incredibly dominant OSU was. I knew they were, but to have an extra 17 wins is very, very impressive to me.

If you count the 2000 Rose Bowl where Wisconsin won (I know it was technically the 1999/2000 season but still), I think the answer IS pretty clear cut. Given Michigan's collapse under DickRod, the answer has to be Wisconsin.

Let's also remember that before 2008, the answer to this question was also clearly Michigan too...and I should point out that you ordered your overall records wrong - Purdue was clearly better than Minny was over the span of the decade anyway.

A 15 year count down clock to the day when you take the overall series record from TSUN would be a nice touch for BP....

Until then, we'll just have to be happy to know that it will be 2,562 days since Michigan last beat Ohio State come The Game in November.

Uh, didn't you forget the 2010 Rose Bowl? I'd say that was a notable bowl win.

He did say it was about 2000-2009. But then, he also specifically included the "bowl games for the '09 year".

While we're picking nits; the Buckeyes won the Fiesta Bowls for the '03 and '05 seasons (the '04 and '06 FBs). Technically, the '02 ('03) NC game was actually the Fiesta Bowl that year.

But since there was no year zero, centuries and millenia actually begin with years ending in 1. If decades are taken the same way, (or if we just decide to define a decade as any 10-year-period we wish to choose), then we can look at 2001-2010. But that decade isn't quite over, so it's less satisfying I suppose.

If we DO consider 2001-2010; then we're trading Cooper's last year (what was it, 6-6?) for our regular season this coming fall.

Now that is going to make for one heck of a decade.

I apologize stating they won two consecutive fiesta bowls. You are correct that they did not. They won two in a row (the 2002 NC game and the 2003 Fiesta). I knew they did played the Alamo in 04, before beating ND in the 05 Fiesta. When compiling the data, I must have seen too many Fiesta bowls and made an error, ha ha.

I know that the actual decade is considered 01-10. However, I didnt want to wait another year to discuss this aspect of football :-p

I did not include the 2010 Rose Bowl because.....The page cut it off. I will try to add it back in there, but the original had it prior to being cut off on the page.

@Wells - I was only counting bowls that were played by teams of this decade (2000-2009) which includes bowl games after 2001 (2001-2010).

@BuckeyeMike - I ranked Minnesota higher than Purdue due to the fact that Minnesota won an extra bowl game. I will change that.

At any rate, I just think its odd that, if you took out OSU, that it would be somewhat hard to label the best Big 10 team of the decade. I would go with Wisconsin personally, but I see how Michigan, Penn State and Iowa also did similarly well (or poorly, if in the case of Michigan).

The 2000 season would include bowl games played in Jan '01 since they were associated with the 2000 season, etc., all the way through the bowl games played in Jan 2010 since they were associated with the 2009 season.

Since this is about teams in the Big Ten, let's look at the cumulative conference records from the 2000 season through the 2009 season:

Ohio State: ... 64-16 (.8000)
Michigan: ..... 53-27 (.6625)
Iowa: ......... 49-31 (.6125)
Penn State: ... 45-35 (.5625)
Wisconsin: .... 44-36 (.5500)
Purdue: ....... 41-39 (.5125)
Northwestern: . 38-42 (.4750)
Michigan State: 32-48 (.4000)
Minnesota: .... 30-50 (.3750)
Illinois: ..... 26-54 (.3250)
Indiana: ...... 18-62 (.2250)

It's stunning just how much we dominated conference opponents during "The aughts". The runner-up during this period (Michigan) is .1375 behind us.
