OT Shane Olivea (All B1G, National Champion, R.I.P.)

Sad news, indeed. Shane struggled with addiction to pain killers during his NFL career. He spoke of taking over 100 Vicodin per day - which would kill a lot of people. His weight ballooned to 400 pounds and cut his career short. He was able to get off the pills through rehab, and completed his OSU degree in 2015. It appears the toll on his body was just too much. He was only 40 years old.

Thanks for the memories, Shane.

Saw this bit you posted. Of course me reading this news knowing that, I buried my brother 4 years ago today, who struggled with addiction that first started with pain killers.
I've seen too well what it can do to both the body and mind. I can imagine what a daily toll it took on him even after Shane got himself clean.

RIP big guy, you were a member of teams that influenced my childhood and early teen years. I just hope this is a lesson for all those coming up and all those in sports medicine, we need to find ways to combat pain killer dependency before it graduates to full blown addiction. Sadly, even if that means walking away from our dream(s) of playing football.

I can't imagine that. I took 2 once after a shoulder surgery back when I was in college and felt drunk for 4 hours going to class. It isn't like I was that much smaller than him.

RIP Shane

I was given Percocet when I broke my arm - 2 per day, for 7 days. I felt great, no pain at all, but everyone else thought I was stoned. When the pills ran out I was craving more, even after only being on them a short time. Eventually the urge subsided, but I can't imagine what being on high doses for an extended period does to a person.

There has to be a better way.

Shane and Will Smith were part of the first recruiting class I was able to really follow.

Ugh.
Add in Kudla back in 2018 (Age 34) and rewatching the NC game will be tough.

Those guys brought a lot of joy to unknown people during their time here - selfishly for me it was what they did on the field, but I’m sure even more joy to the people that knew them off the field.
