OT Shane Olivea (All B1G, National Champion, R.I.P.)

Boxing workouts help Bolts' Olivea stay fit
By: STEVE SCHOLFIELD - Senior Sports Columnist

SAN DIEGO -- Spend a few minutes with Chargers offensive tackle Shane Olivea, and you get the feeling he is ready for the season opener today.

Olivea is not only excited about the Chargers' future but he's exhausted as well.

Yes, exhausted.

He's been going through a rigid offseason training program with new strength coach Jeff Hurd -- a program that includes boxing.

Olivea went down with an injury early in the going against the Patriots. Rolled up on back of the legs and back bent back in an awkward position.

Made it off field under his own steam, but has been subbed.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. ? The lasting effect of last night's loss will be determined by doctors, as the Chargers lost three starters.

On the Chargers' third play from scrimmage, right tackle Shane Olivea went down with a lower back injury he said was the result of a little extra something by Patriots linebacker Adalius Thomas.
Olivea said Thomas kept shoving on him when he was bent backward in a pile. Olivea will have further tests today and could miss Sunday's game at Green Bay.

Chargers' Shane Olivea practices but is questionable for Green Bay game

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Chargers right tackle Shane Olivea practiced on Friday for the first time since straining his back in a loss to the Patriots, but it appears he'll miss Sunday's game at the Green Bay Packers.
Olivea moved stiffly and said he'd have to talk his way into the lineup by assuring coach Norv Turner and offensive line coach Jack Henry he is OK. Olivea was listed as questionable on the injury report.

"If it was up to me, I would play," Olivea said. "But I have to convince Jack and Norv."

If Olivea can't go, the Chargers would replace him with either first-year pro Jeromey Clary or veteran Roman Oben. It appears Clary has the edge, and it would mark his first NFL start. Clary's starting debut would come against Green Bay left defensive end Aaron Kampman, who led the NFC last year with 15 1/2 sacks.

It was Clary who replaced Olivea when he went down early in the New England game. The results were mixed, but possibly good enough to get the call Sunday - depending on Olivea's health.

Chargers not counting on OT Olivea

His expression said it all yesterday concerning Shane Olivea's chances of lining up for the Chargers in Green Bay tomorrow.

The offensive tackle could not have appeared more glum after testing the status of his back injury by taking part in a few drills.

?I'm just day-to-day right now, just trying to get out there and move around,? said Olivea. ?I did some things. It's going to be a game-time decision.?

?It'll be one of those deals where we'll see Sunday where we are,? coach Norv Turner said of Olivea's availability at Lambeau Field. Should Olivea be unable to go, Turner said he would choose between young Jeromey Clary and veteran Greg Oden at right tackle, adding, ?I would think we would go with Clary.?

Tackle Olivea loses starting job to Clary

In what already has been an unusual season, the Chargers yesterday made an unusual move.
They made a change in their starting lineup for reasons other than injury, trade or a reserve (say, Antonio Cromartie) suddenly becoming the league's interception leader, some thing that rarely happens during a season.

Right tackle Shane Olivea, who has started every game but two during his four seasons with the Chargers, was benched in favor of Jeromey Clary, who has started one game.

The move first was made during the second quarter of Sunday's game against Baltimore. But it became official yesterday when the Chargers began practicing for this week's game at Kansas City and Clary worked with the first team. Coach Norv Turner later confirmed the switch.

?Shane struggled early in the game, and Clary went in and played real well,? Turner said. ?I thought it gave us a boost. It's just doing the right thing.?

Asked if the move was permanent or just for one week, Turner said, ?We'll just see. I hope it's not something we have to change at the end of a quarter, but ? it's a competitive situation right now.?

What made the move even more surprising was that less than two years ago the Chargers considered Olivea one of their core players. He signed a long-term contract before the 2006 season that included $7.5 million in bonus money and $2 million in salary over the first two seasons of the deal.

The only bonus in Clary's contract is $6,000 as a workout bonus. His salary is the NFL minimum of $285,000.

Olivea, normally one of the most talkative Chargers, was reticent yesterday.

?I don't want to say the wrong thing, so I'll just say nothing,? he said. ?I'm going to continue to work. I'm going to continue to do what's asked of me.?

Olivea, 26, missed all of one game and most of another early in the season with a back injury. He has experienced tightness since but nothing that caused him to miss time.

Chargers bench right offensive tackle for Chiefs game

Olivea, 26, has been regarded by some league personnel evaluators as one of the NFL's most consistent right tackles, a position that has lacked quality leaguewide the past few seasons. Despite his low-round draft status, Olivea earned a starting job as a rookie in 2004 and started all 16 games that season.

The former Ohio State lineman has missed only two of a possible 59 games, one in '05 because of a sprained knee, and the Sept. 23 game this season when his back stiffened.

Not familiar with league rules on cutting players, but getting rid of a guy who gets $7.5 million in bonus money and $2 million in salary over his first two seasons in favor of a guy who gets only a $6,000 workout bonus makes the NFL minimum of $285,000 could be what's driving this. My math says that's a $9 million savings for a right tackle...

Chargers release McCree, Neal & Olivea

The expected happened today, as the Chargers released fullback Lorenzo Neal and free safety Marlon McCree.
In a somewhat surprising move, offensive tackle Shane Olivea was released as well.

It was thought that Olivea, who lost his starting job at right tackle midseason and fell out of favor with the coaching staff over his work ethic and commitment, would be given another year to get back in the good standing and perhaps earn back his job.

Olivea release airs Smith error

Unhappy OT joins McCree, Neal on cut list

There was a bit of unexpected mixed in with the expected yesterday as Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith made his housekeeping public at the end of the NFL's league year.
Three veterans were notified of their release ? bringing to fruition the long-anticipated departures of fullback Lorenzo Neal and free safety Marlon McCree ? and the somewhat surprising jettisoning of offensive tackle Shane Olivea.

All three, knowing their roles here were either going to be diminished or extinguished, had asked to be released.

Olivea had quietly made known he was unhappy as a Charger in recent months. But it was thought the team would keep him at least through training camp, in part because of the big contract he signed in 2006.

Olivea lost his starting job at right tackle to Jeromey Clary in the middle of last season and fell out of favor with coaches over his work ethic and commitment.

Olivea was given a six-year contract a month before the 2006 season that already has paid him $9.5 million. The quick release signals the first glaring misstep by Smith in his awarding of long-term contracts to the Chargers' young players.

?For the Chargers, it didn't work out,? Smith said. ?It's not 100 percent . . . He lost his fire.?

"For the Chargers, it didn't work out," Smith said. "It's not 100 percent . . . He lost his fire."

Yup. It's totally on Olivea that he 'lost his fire.' I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact you fired Schottenheimer and replaced him with Norval Eugene Turner.

Seriously. WTF!?! Norval.

Somebody got their ass kicked on the playground A LOT as a child.
