OT Shane Olivea (All B1G, National Champion, R.I.P.)

New York Giants put Shane Olivea on injured reserve
by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
Thursday August 14, 2008

OT Shane Olivea, the former rising star for the Chargers whom the Giants signed last month, has been placed on injured reserve with a back injury.

Olivea was cut by San Diego after a battle with painkillers affected him on and off the field. The Giants, confident his troubles were behind him, signed him to a one-year deal and hoped he would provide solid depth behind RT Kareem McKenzie.

However, Olivea hurt his back early in camp after one of his most impressive practices. The team was hopeful he was improving but he never returned to the field. (Olivea is expected to be released with an injury settlement once he gets healthy.)

Olivea's comeback attempt comes to an end
Shane Olivea?s attempt to revive his career with his hometown team is officially over.

The Giants placed the right tackle on injured reserve this afternoon, due to a bad back that has kept him sidelined for more than a week. He is likely headed for an injury settlement sometime in the next few weeks.

Tom Coughlin sounded very disappointed that Olivea didn?t work out. The Giants thought they had a steal when they signed the former Chargers right tackle, who was trying to overcome an addiction to pain killers and restart his stalled NFL career.

?We had an extended amount of time here where we tried to improve his situation. It didn?t seem like we were getting very far,? Coughlin said. ?It was very unfortunate because we thought when we first brought Shane in that this would be something where both parties would benefit. We have a veteran football player, we have a guy who?s gone through some things and was anxious to start his career over. We thought that this was the right situation.

Coughlin said that after all the rehab Olivea has done, he had just reached a point where he was no longer progressing.

?We didn?t think there was going to be any down time whatsoever,? Coughlin said. ?The unfortunate thing is, on his best practice day, that very evening he couldn?t come back out and practice. It?s unfortunate.?

NY Giants officially part ways with Olivea
by Mike Garafolo/The Star-Ledger
Thursday August 21, 2008

Minor news here that we all expected, but wanted to pass it along anyway: The Giants have terminated the contract of OT Shane Olivea after giving the former Charger an injury settlement yesterday. This means Olivea is now a free agent. The Giants can only re-sign him after a period of six weeks plus however many weeks of salary were included in the settlement.

The Ravens should give Olivea a call and get him locked up for next year. Even if he never gets out of his stance he'd be an upgrade over half the guys on their roster.

Former Chargers tackle buys Boca del Mar 5BD

by Ryan Anderson, published Oct. 27, 2009

Shane Olivea bought a five-bedroom, three-bath home at 6202 Vista Linda Lane in Boca del Mar from Christopher and Kelly Staller for $591,000 on Sept. 18.

The Stallers bought the property for $632,000 in Jan. 2008. The 4,121-square-foot house in the Boca del Mar South neighborhood was built in 1996.

Mr. Olivea has been an offensive tackle with the San Diego Chargers and New York Giants. He started 31 games in two seasons with the Chargers before being released prior to the 2008 season. The Giants released him that year following a season-ending back injury.

Although skeptical of the back injury that forced Shane Olivea's release from the New York Giants in training camp in 2008, a few clubs who need right tackle insurance are doing their due diligence on the former Ohio State star. He didn't play last season and has a drug suspension on his r?sum?, but he is only 28 years old and was an all-rookie choice with the San Diego Chargers in 2004.
