OT Phillip Daniels (Official Thread)

“I was just chilling. I was like, ‘OK, cool guy, I'm finna go against him.’ I didn't really see too much of nothing on film. And then before the play he smacked my helmet off, he was like, ‘You trash,’ lined up and said it before me,” Daniels said. “I was like, ‘Huh? Me? I know you’re not talking to me.’ I hemmed him up. He took my helmet off, I’m still going, had a few choice words.”

Daniels – who posted a clip of Simmons’ penalty on Instagram on Monday, drawing three crying laughing emojis from Simmons in the post’s comments – said “it was cool after that” between him and Simmons and that he didn’t hear much more trash talk from Simmons for the rest of the game. But he was visibly fired up after drawing that penalty, which he said was a special moment for him as Ohio Stadium celebrated the penalty with him.

“After I did all that, the whole stadium erupted. It was kind of like a movie a little bit, I ain't gonna lie,” Daniels said Wednesday.

Daniels said he’s not typically one to initiate trash talk himself, but he will respond if someone talks trash to him – ideally with his play as much as his mouth.

“I don't talk trash; I'm really, I'm an offensive lineman, I'm tired,” Daniels said with a laugh. “But if you try me, I'm not gonna just stand there and let you say something to me, you know what I'm saying? I'm gonna respond, either on the football side or both.”

“We just set the tone,” Daniels said. “You're gonna come here and talk crazy, y’all think y'all the number one team, y'all gonna come in here and just beat on us? Nah. Home-field advantage, and we got one of the best QBs in the league, we got Jeremiah, we got the whole O-line, we got the running backs; everybody was clowning. So it just felt good.”

PHILLIP DANIELS APPRECIATION THING

I wanted to write about Daniels in Five Things last week but there was just too much to dig into. Against Texas, making his first start as a Buckeye and just his fifth overall (4 at Minnesota last year), Daniels set the tone in going toe-to-toe with elite edge Colin Simmons throughout. He even drew a 15-yard penalty from Simmons that extended Ohio State's first touchdown drive in what became a 14-7 win. Throughout that contest, Daniels was mauling dudes, finishing plays and giving back any chirp that came his way.

Yesterday, Daniels played about a half and was again dishing out punishment and doing his job with vigor.

Growing up, Daniels wanted to be a Buckeye but the 3-star out of Cincinnati Princeton didn't receive an offer from Ohio State, that is until he entered the transfer portal following his second season at Minnesota. Last winter, Ohio State was the only visit Daniels took after entering the portal and quickly committed to the Buckeyes as the No. 4 offensive tackle in the transfer portal.

At that time, there seemed to be a solid chance he'd start at tackle but after Ohio State signed Ethan Onianwa from Rice via the portal - a guy Tom Luginbill tabbed as the best tackle available by a wide margin - and then Day kept raving about Austin Siereveld as a tackle in fall camp, Daniels' chance at starting seemed a bit more tenuous.

But as reviews on Onianwa seemed less impressive as fall camp marched on, Daniels kept grinding and put a stranglehold on the starting right tackle spot. Through two games, it's easy to see why. He's done his part as Ohio State's offensive line has yet to yield a sack and yesterday the run game showed more signs of life with 7.2 yards per carry.

If you don't find yourself watching the offensive line much throughout a game, just focus on Daniels for any given play and I bet he's giving max effort and intensity.

Seems to be the 'catch of the day' from the portal. Afterthought to the big guy from Rice, but worked his way into the starting line-up, and in fact worked his magic against one of best DL in country. Looks like he has another year of eligibility as well, after this one.

‘He’s a little different this week’ – Ohio State starter is a man on a mission heading into game against Minnesota

He’s going to have a bit on his mind heading into this one.

The Ohio State Buckeyes roster isn’t impacted as heavily this year with transfers last year, but there are a couple who are making an impact. Ohio State’s biggest get in the portal was former Purdue TE Max Klare, who hasn’t exactly been able to get going with the Buckeyes. Ethan Onianwa was expected to be a starting tackle for the Buckeyes, but his job was won by a player who may be the Buckeyes’ most impactful transfer thus far.

Buckeyes RT Phillip Daniels is looking forward to playing Minnesota on Saturday

When Ohio State landed Daniels from Minnesota it was figured that he would start at one tackle spot and Onianwa would man the other. That didn’t happen and the rise of Austin Siereveld as the left tackle is a big reason why. Daniels won the battle on the right side and has been a positive for the Buckeyes through four games. On Saturday, Daniels will go up against his old team.

“We love the intensity, we love the passion, we love how hard he plays,” Ryan Day said earlier in the week. “He gives us an edge. This will be a big week for him, playing against his old team. But the guys appreciate what he brings every day. He brings a work ethic and a toughness.”

Ohio State is coming off a solid road win over Washington and returns home for its second Big Ten game against Minnesota. It’ll be the second night game of the season for the Buckeyes with the first one being against the Ohio Bobcats. Heading into the game, even Daniels’ teammates see something about him.

“He’s a little different this week,” Siereveld said on Wednesday. “He’s ready to go out there and compete on Saturday.”

“It’s a lot of fun for him,” LG Luke Montgomery shared. “I guess he’s been talking to some of the offensive linemen guys there the past few weeks and stuff like that. I think for him it’s pretty special, so it’ll be really cool for him.”
