OT Mike Adams (Official Thread)

Ohio State lineman among draft prospects who have visited Steelers
By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, March 27, 2012

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. ? The Steelers have started the process of hosting pre-draft visits as they met with a trio of prospects last week, including Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams.

Adams has been widely projected as a first-round pick even though he had an underwhelming showing at the NFL Scouting Combine last month and as well as some off-the-field issues at Ohio State. The Steelers also hosted Florida International University wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and Cincinnati defensive end Derek Wolfe before coming here for the NFL owners' meetings.

The 6-7, 323-pound Adams has been linked to the Steelers in a number of mock drafts and has the build of prototypical left tackle. Hilton, who is 5-9 and 183 pounds, had 950 receiving yards and seven touchdown last season and also excelled as a return man. The 6-5, 295-pound Wolfe earned Co-Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors after recording 19 1/2 tackles for losses in 2011.

The Steelers have the No. 24 pick in the draft, which will be held April 27-29. They have 10 overall selections, one in every round and three extra ones in the seventh round.

The Steelers were awarded three compensatory picks yesterday for free agency losses from 2011.

Prospect Watch: Mike Adams
Wednesday, 28 March 2012
Written by Dan Gigler

An occassional look at potential 2012 NFL Draft picks for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Previous installments featured Memphis DT Dontari Poe, Washington DT Alameda Ta'amu, Georgia OL Cordy Glenn and Alabama LB Dont'a Hightower. Today: Ohio State OT Mike Adams ...

Though the Steelers ostensibly have their starting tackle positions penciled in for 2012 with second-year man Marcus Gilbert moving to protect Big Ben's blind side and Willie Colon hoping to make it through a game -- let alone a season -- for the first time in a few years.

Given Colon's lack of durability, a lack of depth at the position and the simple fact that the Steelers are paying over $100 million to an exceptionally talented quarterback who by some miracle isn't in a vegetative state given the abuse he's taken over the years (314 career sacks!), continuing to bolster the offensive line might be a good idea.

To that end, this is a better-than-average draft for tackles and a number of mock drafts seem to suggest that Ohio State's Mike Adams will be available when the Steelers pick at no. 24. At 6' 7" 320+ pounds, Adams is a gigantic human being that moves around quite well. The NFL Network's Mike Mayock has Adams as the No. 4 tackle in the draft and the National Football Post has him at No. 2.

So a good fit, right?

2012 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
March 30, 2012
By Cory J. Bonini
Edited by Keith Hernandez

Ohio State offensive tackle Mike X. Adams brings a wealth of potential and almost as much downside for teams in the 2012 NFL Draft that are considering a swing tackle with a future as a franchise blindside protector.
Mike X. Adams, OT, Ohio State
Upside with question marks
Strengths

Massive fame (6-foot-7 1/4, 323 pounds)
Versatile enough to play both tackle positions
Strong run blocker
Wide stance, long arms (34 inches) and very large hands (10 7/8 inches)
Played for a strong program in a tough conference
Does a good job of sealing the edge
Acceptable athleticism while on the move
Very good against bull rushers
Plays with hustle when blocking downfield
Has a mean streak on the field

Weaknesses

Involved in the tattoo scandal and was suspended five games in 2011
Had been charged with misdemeanor drug paraphernalia possession (later dropped) in 2009; suspended first two games of '09 season for violating team rules
Struggles to get leverage on short speed rushers
Suspect upper-body strength
Relies too much on his size rather than improving technique
Didn't often play up to his potential
Mild injury concerns

Expected draft placement

Adams is a risky prospect, but his physical tools alone help mitigate some of that. He has first-round potential, but his off-the-field concerns may cause teams to wait until the second round before selecting him.

He could draw interest from the Detroit Lions (No. 23), Philadelphia Eagles (No. 14), Pittsburgh Steelers (No. 24) and New York Giants (No. 32) in the first round. The St. Louis Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and Sand Diego Chargers all could consider him on the second day, depending what they do in the first round.

Tell me how happy I'd be if the Brownies get RT Mike Adams in the 3rd round... or even 2nd round... :)

You should be happy if the Brownies got Mike in the first round at pick 22...

EDIT: Sorry, didn't realize you were being sarcastic from that stupid video

Here are a couple of draft analysts speaking about Adams.

ESPN?s Todd McShay:

Adams has a massive frame and moves easily for his size, and although he doesn?t play with as much of an edge as you?d like, he has the tools to emerge as a starter at the next level.

ESPN?s Mel Kiper:

Adams is a guy who I?ve come around on, because he simply knows how to protect the pocket. He can slide his feet and doesn?t get beat inside, but he has the length and technique to protect the edge.

CBSSports.com:

Adams already moves well enough to get into linebackers on the second level. He has a substantial frame with conspicuous muscle in the right places and the footwork of a dancer, albeit more like hip hop than ballet. On film he did well handling Wisconsin?s J.J. Watt (drafted No. 11 overall by Texas last year).

The consensus on Adams seems to be there is a little worry about his off the field issues and doesn?t seem to be an immediate starter at left tackle like the players ranked ahead of him.

Report: Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams visited Cleveland Browns
Published: Tuesday, April 17, 2012
By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND -- Add Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams to the long list of tackles that have made pre-draft visits to the Browns.

Adams, a projected first-rounder, has visited the Browns, Steelers, Rams and Bills, according to Aaron Wilson of scout.com.

Wilson also reported that the Browns hosted Nevada middle linebacker James-Michael Johnson, a projected second- or third-rounder.

Adams could be on the Browns' radar with their No. 22 overall pick. They're looking for their starting right tackle and have also hosted Georgia's Cordy Glenn, USC's Matt Kalil, Stanford's Jonathan Martin and California's Mitchell Schwartz.

Adams started the final eight games of the 2011 season after being suspended for the first five games for selling his 2008 Big 10 championship ring. He was still voted the team's top offensive lineman.

This is a microcosm of the larger sense of entitlement that bit this team in the ass for the past couple of years. Too bad it might have hurt his NFL stock. Last year's group of seniors certainly left one "unique" legacy.
