OT Mike Adams (Official Thread)

Mike Adams: Mike Adams manages 19 reps of 225 lbs
Mike Adams - T - CLG - Feb. 24

Ohio State OT Mike Adams managed just 19 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press at the Combine Friday.
It was one of the lower totals of the day. Adams have nearly 34-inch arms and an 82 1/2-inch wingspan, which makes benching tougher. He should probably still be able to hoist more than 20 reps. Georgia OL Cordy Glenn, who has 36-inch arms, repped 225 pounds 31 times. While Adams has big-time potential, he's shaping up as an Anthony Davis kind of prospect coming out of Rutgers.

Is that good for an OL? I'm guessing it's above average but nothing extraordinary

It's a little below average, most of them run between 5.1 and 5.4 something. But the OL is the position where the scouts are least concerned about the 40 time.

They just changed his official time to a 5.40

For offensive lineman... do people really care how fast they run 40-yards. It's something they will NEVER have to do in the NFL. Much more concerned with shuttle speeds, cone drills, reach, and strength drills.

I mean, 4.99 isn't slow, but it also isn't fast either.

True, but for an OL, with his weight and size that's pretty impressive. Only reason I think teams would care is because it could be used as a measure of overall athleticism, and also of fine "twitch" lower body muscles which I imagine would be useful to lineman as agility is so valued. Someone more knowledgeable, feel free to correct me

Grudgingly... yes its impressive. I have never been sold on the 40-yd being a measure of athleticism, I always thought the cone drills did that much better, it adds in agility and acceleration. I think that is more effective at evaluating lineman.

It appears to me that Mike Adams has motivation issues. Once motivated, he excels. It took him 2.5 years at OSU for the light to finally come on....then the suspension took a lot out of him.

I suspect Adams will get drafted late 1st...early 2nd....and come into camp like a lamb but leave like a lion.

Time is on your side, Mike, but it won't be forever

They look at it (the 40) but it isn't as important for linemen as the 10 yard split is. Generally, though, the guys who have a quicker 10yd split also have the faster 40's.

For the most part, I think that the NFL guys are looking to see guys body types, shape balance etc... without the pads. If you have a guy who impresses at the combine, they will go back and watch more film on them.

Even though we don't get to watch the sit down interviews, I think that is also one of the top 'events' in the combine.

ALSO, it is a great illustration of who is ready and willing to prepare themselves for life in the NFL. I watched most of the day yesterday and one guy stood out to me more than anyone else at the combine. For all the wrong reasons. Rishaw Johnson Played for, and was dismissed by, the Ole Miss squad. He came in having obviously not been preparing at all for the drills. He was lost, didn't know how to move, couldn't follow instruction, sloppy.. I am not sure he was a guy who would have been drafted anyway, but he removed all doubt in my eyes. It was really frustrating to watch a guy who has some physical ability and was given a golden opportunity to impress the people who can give him a chance in the league and just come in looking so bad.

Ohio State T Mike Adams posted 21 bench press reps at the team's Friday Pro Day.
Adams improved his result by two since his abysmal 19 repetitions at the Combine. The trouble is Adams repeatedly plays soft in his upper body along with inconsistent footwork and delayed reaction timing. Adams is a massive offensive tackle but needs to toughen up. The slight improvement is promising and Adams is still likely to be drafted in the first round. Mar 9

Mike Adams, DeVier Posey star at Ohio State's pro day
Russ Lande Sporting News

Ohio State's pro day was fruitful for two offensive NFL draft prospects in particular: Tackle Mike Adams and wide receiver DeVier Posey. Their solid workouts were huge, because both players have been climbing draft boards and needed to put a stamp on their strong postseason.

After an excellent week of practices at the Senior Bowl in January, Adams put himself into the discussion to be a first-round pick and had many offensive line coaches in Columbus to watch him work on Friday. He displayed quick feet, agility and athleticism that are uncommon in 6-7 linemen. Combined with his long arms and strength, Adams is a lock to go by the end of Round 1.

Mike Adams: Steelers watch Mike Adams' Pro Day closely
Mike Adams - T - CLG - Mar. 9

The Steelers reportedly sent front office members and "main" coaches to Ohio State's Friday Pro Day, with T Mike Adams the "apple of their eye".
The Steelers certainly need offensive line help but Adams doesn't fit their hard-nosed attitude. Adams' play when covering the blindside was incredibly inconsistent and he drew mixed reviews from media onlookers during Senior Bowl week. He's a realistic option at the 24th pick but the Steelers will need to toughen up the 6'7/323 pound tackle.

Adams had 21 reps in the bench press.

?I was pretty happy with it,? he said. ?I came in hoping to get 21 or 23. Twenty-one was fine with me.?

That?s still on the low end of the acceptable range for an offensive tackle. But Adams, who is 6-foot-7, has long arms, and that?s not conducive to great numbers in the bench press.

One NFL scout who requested anonymity said Adams? bench-press numbers were not a concern.

?Because he plays strong,? the scout said. ?He?s got that long reach and is pretty talented. He?s a special athlete.?

"You're just trying to do everything as well as you can," said left tackle Mike Adams. "You want to show off your best to have everybody see what you can do."

Adams, who disappointed some scouts at the NFL Combine by only managing 19 reps of 225 pounds, bettered that number by two on Friday, and was pleased with it.

"I was pretty happy with it," he said. "I came in hoping to get 21 or 23, so 21 was fine with me."

While the first number was a disappointment to some, Adams' long arms are seen as one of the major reasons for a "low" number. Those long arms are also something that scouts drool over as they project him as a pass blocker.

?Long arms in the bench can't help you, but it is what it is," he said. I've got them, so I've got to work with them."

He declined to run the 40-yard dash.

Mike Adams, OT (6-foot-7 1/8, 323 pounds) ? Adams just got measured and worked out in position drills, and he looked good but not exceptional. He?s a good athlete with long arms. One of the things teams are concerned about is his inconsistency, which isn?t something that can be addressed in a pro day work out. If you look his tape from the Nebraska game last season, he looked like a first-round pick. He didn?t look quite as good, however, in the Purdue tape.

I don't understand where these "mixed reviews at Senior Bowl week" are coming from, Rotoworld needs to do their research and not let the "meh" combine showing affect their evaluation of prior performance. Mike was easily one of the best players at the Senior Bowl.
