WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Women's Basketball Head Coach Jim Lewis announced today that freshman Shayla Cooper informed the University that she will no longer be part of the team and intends to transfer.
"Shayla has decided to transfer and we wish her the best," Lewis said. "She's an outstanding student and athlete and she has a very bright future. We appreciate the contributions she has made to the Georgetown program."
Cooper, a 6-2 forward from Norcross High School in Norcross, Ga., played in the first two games of the season for the Hoyas. She averaged 16.0 ppg and 8.5 rpg while managing 3.5 apg and 32.5 minutes per contest.
Cooper's status as a member of the Georgetown women's basketball team was incorrectly communicated on Sunday. She was not suspended. She informed the University of her intent to transfer on Saturday evening prior to Sunday's game against Cal. She leaves the team in good standing.
Best to reserve opinions on this one. Lots of negative stuff going on here. The head coach and one ass't coach are suspended for unprofessional conduct and language issues.
Current coach is Jim Lewis, technically an interim. Well thought of, long term, college head coach and WNBA assistant. He is north of 65 by a couple of years, lives nearby, so they hired him. The assistant was exonerated.
Personally, I have no idea why Holland is transferring to Ohio State because in addition to Mitchell we have a number of underclassmen who can also play point guard. The women's team needs post players more than anything but you can never have enough good guards if you have enough room on your roster. Plus, maybe she has seen DickieV wandering aimlessly around the Duke campus yelling "I love Coach K" or perhaps she likes snow. I really do not know and you bring up a good point. Why would Holland want to come to tOSU when Mitchell is coming in as the #1 PG in the nation? I understand depth from tOSU perspective, but why would a kid that got a schollie from Duke (high scholarship, high performance), and is from South Carolina want to come to our place. Not saying don't want her, just seems a bit curious to me. Is she a SG as well? Quick is good, no, make that great. W/o playing a game at Duke she left, and no one knows who the heck the new coach is. Dunno, any thoughts?
Go Bucks. PS, watched the men's game today. Are Katie Smith and Jantel Lavender's jerseys hung from the rafters as well? Thanks.

Thanks for tuning in on the men's game yesterday evening. You probably should do that more often Ohio State has not retired any of the women's jerseys so none are hanging from the rafters. I think if they do get around to doing that Katie's number would go up there first.
