OSU on the road 2001-current

I don't know how many times you see it in football, but it happens.

Teams don't come out and play very well after bye weeks. It also sucks when we are playing a night game and on the road. It is like 3 things are working against us.

make that 4 things, the weather def. had a affect on the game, but those 4 things are all what Big Ten games are about, in no way do i see this as a "upset", what if PSU was ranked #8 at the beggining of the year, they would be a top 4 right now, but no, they were unranked more than half-way through the season, and that is why we underestimated them because they were ranked #16 and not #4

Actually, I'm almost positive it gets worse if you only consider conference play:

2005: 0-1
2004: 1-3
2003: 2-2
2002: 4-0
2001: ? (does anyone have this?)

So that's 7-6 in away Big 10 games under Tressel, and I'd imagine it gets worse, b/c we weren't very good in 2001.

So here's a question...does anyone else think it might be a good idea to schedule a few more OOC road games? I understand all the reasons we don't (needing to go undefeated, money, etc.), but it seems like we lulled into complacency sometimes when we play at home for 4 or 5 in a row, only to have the first road game against a big conference rival. I know we're going to Texas...maybe we need to make sure we have an OOC road game most years (doesn't have to be a "huge game", but we could go to Arkansas or something)? Would this help our results in conference play, which are the most important? The winner of the Big Ten hits a BCS game every year, and maybe it would be worth the risk of losing a gmae or 2 OOC if it helped us later in the year.

Some teams are dominant, on the road and at home. Every once in a while they will struggle, but most of the time they dominate. Ohio State is not one of those teams. We were not dominant in 2002, but we got the breaks we needed, and we made the plays when we needed to make them, but we were not dominant. If you want to see dominance, look at Virginia tech, and Texas. What separates us from the dominant teams, coaching, talent, training, or all of the above? I don't know the answer to that, I am not a football guru, but I do know that dominance starts on the defensive line, and the offensive line. Our offensive line has played piss poor ever since JT has been coach, and the defensive line hasn't played consistently since 2003.

Yeah Va Tech has looked dominant against some really bad teams. You put them in that environment tonite and I assure you that if they win it is my no less than 7 pts. Texas I give 10 b/c they just have "it" this year, even know they won't be tested the rest of the year.

Just wanted to add this little tidbit:

2001 @ scUM and 2002 @ Wisky were the only 2 times we have won a road game against a team that finished the season with a winning record.

The rest were all against teams that finished the season sub .500.

Wow, thats a Llloyd like stat right there. You know what really scares me? The unmotivated lackadaisical team I saw playing last night reminded me of a Llloyd Car coached team.

You want to know why this team struggles on the road so much under Tressel?

Because we haven't had the type of offense to take the opposing crowd out of the game. Period.

In the Cooper years, we would walk into a hosile environment, Eddie would break off a big run for a TD, and the next drive Hoying would hit Glenn for a bomb, it'd be 14-0 before you could bat an eye, and that formerly "hostile" crowd would be quieter than a church mouse.

If you consistently play "Tressel-Ball" that keeps the opposing team in games, then you're gonna have to put up with loud, raucous crowds, and having certain drives stalled by getting pinned deep on the side of the field with the student section late in the game.

You almost have to have a team as mentally tough as the '02 squad in order to win.

EXCELLENT point Sloop

DOnt think I can agree with you more.

The problem with that is they dont learn how to play in a tight situation but I would much more prefer to wipe the floor quickly against a team early than watch a cardiac inducing team year after year.

The only think I miss with Cooper is his ability to flat out make a mockery of another teams defense... I long for the 72-0 wins that made Mark May toss and turn every night.

Right on the money Sloop. I was questioning the field goal at the beginning of the game and wondering why we took Pittman out and put Schnittker in.

It just seems that we get so conservative once we hit the other teams 20. Instead of playing for a TD, we play not too lose the FG.

I totally agree with you Sloop.
Get a quick score on the board if you can. Run some trick plays, do anything to get that score.

Getting the crowd out of the game is huge for a visiting team. Suddenly the playing field has become somewhat neutral
