OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

On Monday, it was reported by Jake Weingarten of stockrisers.com that Ohio State was one of two programs to reach out to four-star shooting guard, and top-50 overall prospect Rakease Passmore. The other program to make contact with him was Oklahoma. Passmore (who has an incredible name for a guard) currently holds scholarship offers from the likes of Indiana, Kansas, Memphis, Oregon, NC State, etc. and will hope to add Ohio State to that list after speaking with the Ohio State coaching staff.

Just sayin': Passmore would be a great name for a QB.....

So right now the departures are Sueing, McNeil, Likekele, Sensabaugh & Brown. There was one open scholarship. Additions are Chatman, Middleton, Royal, Parks and Battle. I would still expect 1-2 more additions to next seasons roster - it seems a transfer guard will be one of them.

ECU basketball transfer guard Javon Small has set visit dates for trips to Ohio State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, according to 247Sports' Travis Branham. ** Happy portaling Ohio State men’s basketball has already dabbled in the transfer portal by taking Minnesota forward Jamison Battle, who has one year of eligibility left. We have heard some reports and rumors of two more players who could visit the OSU campus. Kansas forward Zach Clemence and East Carolina guard Javon Small had both talked about coming to Columbus to check out coach Chris Holtmann’s program.

We need both and if we get both, this roster will be fire!

Zach Clements (a 4 ★ recruit) didn't exactly set the world on fire at Kansas:

2022-23 (SOPHMORE)
Played in 20 games this season averaging 5.6 minutes per contest … Finished the year with 28 points, 25 rebounds, and seven blocks … Had a career high ten points with two threes against Oklahoma (1/10) … Recorded a career high three blocks against Kansas State (1/31) while also scoring five and snagging three boards.

2021-22 (FRESHMAN)
Played in 24 games in Kansas’ 2022 NCAA National Championship season … Averaged 4.9 minutes per contest … Has a career-high three assists vs. Texas Southern (3/17) in the NCAA Tournament … Had two points and two assists vs. West Virginia (3/10) in the Big 12 Tournament … Tied career high with six rebounds with two blocks and two assists vs. Oklahoma State (2/14) … Played nine minutes with three points and three rebounds vs. Oklahoma (2/12) … Missed nine games prior to the OU contest due to injury … Made the most of his 12 minutes vs. Stony Brook (11/18) with 11 points and six rebounds … Had seven points in seven minutes in his career debut vs. Michigan State (11/9).

Also, it doesn't sound like they are holding a scholarship for Bronny James. Makes you wonder if that "ship has sailed".

Ohio State’s best recruiting class under Chris Holtmann didn’t lead to tremendous team success in 2022-23, but the seeds are being sown for the future.

With three of Ohio State’s four top-70 prospects returning from its eighth-ranked national recruiting class in 2022 (Bruce Thornton, Roddy Gayle and Felix Okpara), the Buckeyes have plenty to build upon in the year to come – especially considering the strides they took late last season.

#8 Mackenzie Mgbako Indiana PF 5
#13 Xavier Booker Michigan State C 5

Just realized Mobley is our only '24 class commitment. Anyone know what our numbers look like for the '24 class and what positions we are targeting? Also tendering my obligatory apologies for lack of basketball recruiting knowledge...I try to keep up, but a general list of realistic commits would be great so I can go look at threads for the players.

Probably have a few transfer but upper classmen are almost nonexistent with maybe Key on scholarship. Total youth movement for Holtmann

Gonna be young.....with plenty of frosh and sophs on the team, obvious that Holtmann will look for some upper class leadership to guide these young 'uns. Hopefully won't discourage the current roster playing the positions these uppers bring. Would imagine that a transfer, being new to the schools, could/would impart the bball knowledge to kids already there, that is reported time and time again from the football team. We'll see how this strategy works out. Nowadays, a 'senior-laden' team is more of a rarity than a normal occurrence. Seniors being 'home grown' even more so. times are a changin'. Go Bucks!
