OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

It certainly looks to me like Diebs has the pieces. Better than prior? Unclear at this time. Now comes the task of stirring the drink, and blending the different components into a work of art. Another part of coaching at the D1 level, methinks. We're counting on you Diebs! Go Bucks!

Sights and Sounds: Key Ohio State prospects in action at Nike, adidas events

We have photos, videos and social media posts from last weekend's travel basketball action from the Nike EYBL in Indianapolis and adidas 3SSB in Bryan, Texas.

This was the only evaluation weekend in the spring for college coaches, so new Ohio State coach Jake Diebler and his staff fanned out to these events and others this past weekend to evaluate all of their top targets.

Introducing: Ohio’s Kameron Mercer considered among best in 2028 class

We share an interview with Cincinnati Winton Woods guard Kameron Mercer, who is regarded as one of the nation's top 2028 prospects.

Cincinnati native Kameron Mercer has been regarded as one of the nation's top basketball prospects in the 2028 class. Mercer, wrapping up his eighth grade year, figures to enroll at Cincinnati Winton Woods High School this fall.

The 6-4, 185-pound Mercer is playing up one level with the All-Ohio Red 15-U team. That team is led by Lima Senior 2027 guard Shawn Foster. Foster is considered one of Ohio's top three prospects for 2027. He is averaging just over 14 points per game in Nike EYBL 15-U play this spring going into this weekend's event in Kansas City.

Others on that team include Mansfield Christian guard Davion Mack, Pickerington Central wing Landon Evans, Cincinnati Winton Woods forward Jaylen Mercer (Kam Mercer's brother and also a football prospect), Garfield Heights forward Jamar Keyes, Columbus Walnut Ridge forward Deon Johnson, Lebanon guard Jashawn Coffey (2028), Cincinnati Indian Hill guard Rocco Disanto (2028) and Lima Senior guard Noah Simpson.

PrepHoops.com recently published its national top five for 2028 and had Mercer ranked No. 1 overall. Cincinnati is reportedly among the schools that have come in with an early offer. He boasted a 4.0 GPA in middle school.

Looking at Script's great article, cannot really see a need for another xfer. Could tOSU take one, certainly, but don't really see the need. Hate seeing that big fat 0 on the current recruiting cycle. Probably too early to see MBB commits, although other schools got them, but probably thinking that current crop of Ohioans waiting to see how well tOSU performs on the floor. Heck, looks like we could do well with an all-Ohio recruiting list for next year. Too many moving pieces for me....Go Bucks!

Someone on U-tube did a compilation of NBA pros - LeBron specifically, taking 4-5 steps. CC always does a two step-bunny hop to get behind the 3-point line. Other WNBA players always go clomp, clomp, jump (which is steps/traveling). Not certain why the zebras don't call it. I never endeared myself to the refs when I chanted, 2-3-4-5 on someone camping in the paint.

The Ohio State basketball team needs another guard

With the loss of Taison Chatman for the year, the Ohio State basketball team needs to use their final open roster spot on a guard.

The Ohio State basketball team got some bad news when they found out that Taison Chatman is going to miss the entire season. He tore his ACL and will miss the entirety of the 2024-25 season. He won't have the opportunity to make an impact on the team like he thought he was going to.

Ohio State still has an open roster spot that they can use. With the news about Chatman, it's clear that the Buckeyes need to use that open spot on a guard. They need to add someone who can handle the ball a bit and shoot. While they may not see a lot of playing time, they need the depth.

It's unclear when Jake Diebler is going to actually fill that roster spot. He's running out of time to do so though. You would think that they would want someone enrolled soon. Perhaps the Buckeyes are waiting on someone who won't get picked in the NBA Draft.

As long as someone doesn't sign with an NBA agent, they still have eligibility left. Perhaps Diebler has his eye on someone who has declared for the Draft. If they are able to grab someone like that, maybe they would actually get someone who would deserve playing time.

The Draft is in just over a week. My guess is that the Ohio State basketball team will have a full roster in the next couple of weeks following the Draft. If it gets past that and there's not another guard on the team, I'd be very surprised.

Just sayin': Getting someone that declared for the draft, wasn't drafted, and didn't sign with an agent is really wishful thinking.

Ohio State Eyeing Toledo Guard Via NCAA Transfer Portal

The Ohio State Buckeyes are not done acquiring talent via the transfer portal

The Ohio State Buckeyes and head coach Jake Diebler have reloaded the roster via the transfer portal ahead of his first full season at the helm, but they’ve been in the mix for some additional names in the middle of this offseason.

Per The Portal Report, Ohio State has reached out to Toledo transfer Tyler Cochran, who recently de-committed from Oregon State after originally committing to the Beavers in May.

The Bolingbrook, IL. native played the first two seasons of his career at Northern Illinois before transferring to Ball State for the 2021-22 season. Cochran then transferred to Toledo, where he spent the past two years. He’s now looking for what could be the fourth stop of his collegiate career.

Per the report, other interested programs include Indiana State, Marshall, Fresno State, Drake, San Diego State, Hawaii, and a potential return to Toledo.

Cochran is coming off an impressive season with the Rockets. Even as a 6-2, 225-pound guard, he led the team with a career-best 6.4 rebounds per game while also finishing with the second-highest scoring average of his career (14.4).

Toledo finished the season with a 20-12 record thanks to some big performances by Cochran. He finished in double figures in 25 of 32 games, which included a season-high 33 points on 13 of 16 shooting in an 88-87 win over Marshall on Dec. 13. He also added four double-doubles.

Ohio State among eight programs interested in Toledo transfer guard Tyler Cochran

The college basketball transfer portal has slowed to a crawl, with most high major programs finalizing their roster as summer practices get underway.

However, there are still quality players looking for a new home this offseason, including a recent re-arrival to the portal in veteran guard Tyler Cochran.

Cochran hit the portal after spending the past two seasons at Toledo, and initially committed to join Wayne Tinkle and Oregon State – giving the Beavers much needed experience after they lost Jordan Pope to Texas.

However, Cochran recently decommitted from Oregon State and is once again on the open market, looking for his fourth school after spending two years at Northern Illinois, one year at Ball State, and the past two at Toledo – all in the MAC.

The 6’2 native of Illinois averaged 14.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.9 steals per game last season for the Rockets, shooting 34.6% from beyond the arc.

Cochran is a bulky guard who generates a lot of steals and is a respectable outside shooter – and he’s already drawing attention from eight different programs, including Ohio State where coach Jake Diebler is hoping to add more depth ahead of his first full season coaching the Buckeyes.

Below is a look at the eight programs reaching out to Cochran, starting with the Big Ten squad in Columbus:

1. Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State already added a quality starting point guard this offseason in Meechie Johnson from South Carolina, but they could use more guard depth after losing Roddy Gayle (Michigan) Scotty Middleton (Seton Hall) and Bowen Hardman (Akron) to the transfer portal.

Cochran would give the Buckeyes a veteran point guard who can shoot it from beyond the arc and plays good defense, and his experience would provide insurance in case incoming freshman John Mobley isn’t ready for a huge role right away.
