OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Matta seems determined to add a guard despite no currently available room at the inn

Ohio State has officially thrown their name in the mix for Markelle Fultz (@MarkelleF) http://scouthoops.scout.com/player/8017436n-markelle-fultz
Matta must know something that all of us do not know. I do not quite understand why he is looking at a SG. I guess I could understand this more if this recruit was a pure PG.

I have no idea what Matta is doing with making all of these 2017 offers unless they are just offers and not Offers. I am surprised that he has not made a verbal offer to a PG from Cleveland East Tech by the last name of Johnson. I know that they were looking at him earlier this year but maybe he is not panning out.

Oh, regarding all the 2017 offers Matta must know something about the guy on the team currently. Maybe they are all better than we think they are and are going to declare after next season:biggrin:

Well, call me confused as hell because I have no idea what Matta is doing now that Wesson has committed. I do not care if Potter reclassifies to 2017 the numbers do not just add up and supposedly after the quiet period Matta has an in-home visit with Simmons scheduled. I just do not know where the numbers are coming from. I thought that Trent, Jr. was a lock for 2017 but now I have no idea what is going on with recruiting. Out of the 13 guys on the roster may be one of them might be NBA ready after 2 years but that is a stretch. It will be interesting to see what happens going forward. Maybe Thad just want to take a rest from recruiting:wink: and spend some quality time with his girls.

HOW KALEB WESSON'S COMMITMENT IMPACTS OHIO STATE'S RECRUITING EFFORTS

55570_h.jpg,qitok=RXEEXhUH.pagespeed.ce.QKipbwSs2Q.jpg

Right now, with Wesson's recent commitment, the Buckeyes have the full number of allotted scholarships (13) through the 2017 class. In order for Ohio State to add another player, one of the players on its current roster would have to transfer or declare early for the NBA Draft, or one of its current commits would have to change his mind and decommit from the Buckeyes. At this point, speculating about these kinds of things would be just that: speculation. There's plenty of time remaining for this to sort itself out.

But it's not like Ohio State isn't looking at adding other options, either. Specifically, the Buckeyes are going hard after the nation's No. 1 shooting guard in the 2017 class, Gary Trent Jr.

Trent is a 6-foot-5 guard out of St. Paul, Minn., who is rated by 247Sports as the No. 8 overall prospect in the country in 2017. He has offers and strong interest from Duke, Kansas and Michigan State in addition to the Buckeyes.

But Ohio State remains a strong contender to land Trent because of his ties to the Buckeyes and, more specifically, Ohio State assistant coach Jeff Boals, who played with Trent's father at Ohio University.

Trent is one of those special players, one who will likely be a McDonald's All-American when the time comes. If he offers up his commitment to the Buckeyes, they'll take it even though there isn't currently an open scholarship. Right now, 247Sports' Crystal Ball has the predictions at 50-50 between Ohio State and Duke.

That's why the Wesson commitment makes things a little cloudy on the recruiting front for the Buckeyes. They got a good player, an in-state player, but they also have high-profile targets still out there with high interest.

Whether or not Ohio State actually lands another guy remains to be seen. It just feels like the Buckeyes may not be finished yet.

I wonder if we could work out getting Wesson a football scholarship? Not that we are running with extras there, but it's not exactly like he's a 2 star football recruit. Let him play football for the first couple of years and see if he could pull the Dudley/Lumpkin/Eisenhard special, then if football isn't working out, switch to a basketball scholarship in his Junior year. There has to be some sort of outside the box thinking going on with Matta, because if not, someone is getting squeezed out.

I know why Matta is pursuing the big fish of Simmons for 2016 and Trent Jr. for 2017, but as we all know we are all-full for the 2016 and 2017 years with our current commitments. I would recruit them as well.

Unfortunately we might see a Creaning, though of course I would hope someone would just transfer to another school for more playing time.

I doubt Lyle will be here for more than 2 years. He's got NBA size, he should be going into his Soph year and he's great on the fast break and going to the rim. Plus, if the story is true about Matta saying first come, first served to Jaquan, D'Angelo and Tyus Jones, I doubt Matta is seeing him as a 4 year player especially after the other two were 1-and-done.

we are a full two seasons away from the 2017 class coming in. as of now we are not oversigned for 2016 and 2017. yes, we are still pursuing a choice few in the cream of the crop as far as guards/wings go in those two classes. I don't think that's unreasonable and while obviously Matta and staff know a lot more about the current and future roster situation than we do, I don't necessarily think that means something specific other than they very wisely expect some attrition of some sort. They've amassed a lot of complementary talents in the frontcourt and they probably know at least one of those guys will be dissatisfied with the resulting lack of PT, not to mention that there are a few of these recruits that have the potential to blow up and leave early, especially Jaquan Lyle who I would not be surprised at all to see leave after two. But they don't want to be in a situation like they've been in for the past several years where the frontcourt has been a constant letdown to teams that could have been really dang good otherwise. They're trying to cover all the bases as far as skill sets go (athletic defender with Giddens, pick 'n pop guy with Potter, interior offense w/ Wesson...don't forget Trevor Thompson will be a senior when Wesson comes in) and learning from past recruiting mistakes where they slow-played Ohio players that they wanted but thought they could wait on (like Devin Williams and Nigel Hayes). They also want to give some of these bigs a year or two to develop here before being thrown into the fire. Amir never improved much but he definitely wasn't ready at all his sophomore year, hence how much Deshaun Thomas played in the post. Is the backcourt a bit light? Absolutely, but I see that as the staff having some confidence in guys like Harris, Grandstaff, Williams, and Lyle while probably seeing a bit more versatility than some of us do in guys like Tate, Mitchell, and Funderburk. the only level of recruit they want to add to that backcourt mixture is elite level and they want to continue to sell the elite recruits on that opportunity. if they strike out and spots open up, there are more capable guards and such available via JUCO or transfer then there are good big men, those are a hotter commodity in the off-season, like chum in shark water.

UCLA accepts verbal commitment from 13-year-old star LaMelo Ball

LaMelo Ball -- a 13-year-old basketball player from California -- has, like his two older brothers, verbally committed to UCLA, the family told CBSSports.com.

The commitment came one day after the Ball family was featured at CBSSports.com.

LaMelo Ball is the younger brother of Class of 2016 star Lonzo Ball and Class of 2017 standout LiAngelo Ball, both of whom committed to UCLA months ago. The brothers play together for a summer team called Big Ballers VXT that's coached by their parents, LaVar and Tina Ball. They're all expected to start for Chino Hills High this season.

LaMelo Ball averaged 19.8 points in a 17-and-under event last week in Las Vegas.
