OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Gibbs would fit in nicely with regard to our scholarships being a graduate transfer. He played his freshman year at Texas. Average around 15 points per game last season and was suspended for 2 games for giving some guy a elbow. Must be a feisty player.

Ohio State basketball: Seton Hall graduate transfer Sterling Gibbs visiting Buckeyes, per report
He's real feisty. Look carefully at the 15 second mark in this clip:

It's one of the ugliest things I've seen on the court since Ron Behagen's heel contacted Luke Witte's forehead.

I thought Seton Hall disgraced itself when it failed to suspend Gibbs for the rest of the season. Fred Taylor never would have considered recruiting him after an incident like that. I attended a lot of Fred Taylor's practices, and I thought he had a lot of class. Ohio State should try to live up to his memory.

I agreed that was a very cheap shot and there is no excuse for that in college basketball. He probably should have been suspended for more than 2 games.. I agree that Coach Taylor would not have put up with that crap but I do not think that Matta is that much different when it comes to his players actions then Coach Taylor. If this kid had more incidents then that one, I guess I would be a little concerned but I do not know his history.

Talent-wise obviously Gibbs could help OSU a lot, but I tend to agree with those that want to avoid chancing Gibbs having another bad incident in an OSU uniform. Next year isn't going to be a banner year either way for OSU most likely, I would pass, not that it matters because he seems to favor UConn anyway.

I don't know, if we got Gibbs, I think we could contend for a B1G title. We would still be inexperienced, but he and Lyle give us a lot of options in the back court. Assume some improvement from Tate and KBD and we look real solid at the 1-4 with good depth. If the bigs can just hold their own and rebound and defend at a higher level than last year, we could be pretty good.

You are a lot more optimistic than most, even moreso than the ones who wear Buckeye goggles that can't see the obvious holes and shortcomings on this roster. We are counting on a lot of inexperience to come in a contribute right away. That doesn't bode well for a successful season. We lost all our experience in the post and 2 primary ball-handlers, although not very productive (Russell obviously was) and I'm not quite sure who on this roster is capable of taking over a game or even wants the ball in their hands late in a game. Good thing they have a few months to figure it out. I'd say Thad's 20+ wins a yr streak would be in jeopardy if they didn't play the weak non-con schedule that they do every year.

Having Gibbs and Lyle would give us a pretty dynamic/offensively skilled back court. Neither is as good/dynamic as Russell, but both are better shooters/scorers than Scott. I honestly don't think it would be much of a drop off at the 1/2 with those 2 guys in the mix and a bench that should provide more support than last year. Tate and KBD should both be better and if Loving can get back to where he was pre-suspension, then I think we will be much better at the 3/4 position. I think the C will pretty much be a wash with this year production wise, but I think we'll be a little better defensively and controlling the glass.

also, the B1G is going to be down at least in terms of not having a great team at the top. Wisky loses a ton, so they come back to the field which was pretty much even after them. MD should be the favorite this year, but I don't see them as a dominant team, unless Stone can be a low post presence on offense. I'm not suggesting we'd be a FF contender, just that in a B1G conference that has a bunch of good, not great teams, we'd have a shot at winning it with guys in the back court that can score like Gibbs and Lyle.

Granted, the B1G is a little tougher than the BE, but Gibbs offensive efficiency was better than that of DAR. The two things that he brings that would improve our team greatly is shooting and ball handling. I think adding him makes our 1's and 2's as good or maybe a little better than last year (more depth).

I agree that expect he will pick UConn, but there is a reason he hasn't pulled the trigger yet, so I think we have a legit shot.

i'm mostly wig.

i'm not holding my breath for Gibbs but if we did get him then we're adding a very experienced, proven, and talented player at PG with Harris to back him up.

you'd have to think between the three of Lyle, Kam, and Grandstaff a pretty good starter at SG would emerge. and probably a decent back-up, too.

Tate is a winner and can play at the 3 or 4.

i don't see why we can't hope for Loving to return to pre-suspension form, at least. if he doesn't then he's got a very talented player in KBD nipping at his heels.

yes, we lose all our experience and seniors in the post and, frankly, that's not much of a loss. if at the very least we get could some modicum of consistency in rebounding and defense from our bigs, that will provide a better foundation then what we had this past season where everything was just too intermittent.

i wouldn't say that we will be better at the 1-2 because DAR was the best SG in the country and it's easy to overlook what Shannon contributed in various areas, like on D, but we will have better quality depth and if we got Gibbs we'd probably have a more offensively dynamic back court. i mean, honestly, if Lyle can keep his act together mentally and get/stay in shape then he and Gibbs would be a real terror on the offensive end.

the comment about 20 wins is just off. i mean, i think we will get to 20 wins, but not because our OOC is too easy or something. we already know we're gonna play @UConn and against UK and Memphis on neutral courts and then we also got the ACC Challenge game.

right now even with Gibbs i don't see us beating MSU or MD for the conference but we could definitely challenge IU/UM for bronze with him. that said, i don't think we can really have an actual debate on this. the pessimists will say, "WE'RE INEXPERIENCED!" the optimists will rejoinder, "BUT WE'RE TALENTED!" both camps are right. we will just have to see how it plays out on the court, which factor will beat out the other, and how the team gels.

Experience really means zilch in college basketball nowadays. So yes the players OSU has lined up could turn in a good year but the fact that most of the team is an unknown makes it hard to expect a great year. Gibbs clearly could be a difference maker for them but it may be the difference between losing 7 or 8 games as opposed to 12 or 13.

U could bring in and add any player in the nation to this current roster and I still think they lose more than 7 games. I think he definitely could bring some needed scoring and toughness though.
