OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

It will be interesting to see over the next couple of months whether or not some 2011 recruits pull the trigger with Scott's announcement and the fact that he is quoted that he is going to do some recruiting for Ohio State. I would have to believe that he is talking about his AAU teammates and I just wonder if that will make the other guys a little concerned about scholarship availability.

Is Ohio State looking at any of his AAU teammates?

So far whats everyone's take on the 2011? Haven't really heard any updates with us in them other than Scott.
Has there been any smoke with any of these players and Ohio State...Adonis Thomas, Branden Dawson, Amir Williams, Jakarr Sampson?

If we take 4-5 players in this class who would everyone like to see in this class? My list would be:
PG:Shannon Scott
SG:biggrin:ai-Jon Parker
SF:Adonis Thomas
PF:Julian Wright
If we take a 5 maybe Amir Williams or Jakarr Sampson

Would love to hear everyone's opinion

I LOVE your first 4 ( take it you mean Julian Royal - Scott's h.s. and AAU teammate that has professed a strong interest in playing together with him at the next level in the past ).

I think a 5 in this class is probably more critical than a 2nd wing actually. Williams would be super. I'd be partying hardy with that kind of a haul. I don't know how legit our chances are with Adonis at the moment. He is a superb prospect, on and off the court, but it may be very/too tough to lure him away from MEM/TN. I wouldn't mind the ultra-versatile ET-like Sam Thompson in his place though - as a more realistic alternative.

Sampson is not a 5. He is more of a 3/4 than an insider actually, and probably wants to play the wing in college. He reportedly has a tweener game right now but is working on his outside shot and handle with the intent to play outside on the next level. So he may be in the running for the 2nd wing spot moreso than the 4 even - let alone the 5.

Definitely think there should be an emphasis on bigs since they've only taken one in the last two classes combined.

Agreed. You have to get a big since Dallas will be gone and there's no way to know how long it will be before Sullinger heads off to the Association. Otherwise, all of your eggs are in Z's basket. Plus, we now have this awesome assistant coach who works great with the big men and needs something to do!

Julian royal maybe he's a pf. plays with scott on hs and aau temas. I think that's big to already have chemistry. Aso i would like to see them go after caldwell (SG), he's also from Georgia. Never seen these kids play, so i don't know. Just throwing out names.

Outside the lines

After watching Sullinger and future OSU teammate Deshaun Thomas in the McDonald's All-American game Wednesday night in Value City Arena, Matta and his assistants will head out to watch high-school prospects in open gyms in April and May.

With five perimeter players among the six freshmen arriving for next season, and point guard Shannon Scott committed for 2011, the Buckeyes need size in 2011 and 2012 so they don't get caught short-handed again like this season.

Names to remember: Jakarr Sampson (Akron), Amir Williams (Detroit), Cody Zeller (Washington, Ind.) and A.J. Hammons (Carmel, Ind.).

Hopefully Matta works his magic

Scott and Thomas 2011

After watching film I'm a big fan of Scott's teammate Dai-Jon Parker, who is more of a SG. With supposed offers to Parker, Thomas, Sam Thompson and Chasson Randle do they take one from that group to go along with Scott and a big (Amir Williams, Julian Royal, Cody Zeller, Jakarr Sampson)? Is the most realistic class one of Scott, Sampson and Thompson/Randle?

What's confusing is Rivals shows an offer to Julian Royal and not Dai-Jon Parker and Scout is just the opposite...

2011 class is going to be very important for OSU. Potentially, OSU could have to replace their entire starting 5 from 2010-11 (Buford, Lighty, Diebler, Lauderdale & Sullinger could be the starters & all will/could leave after next year). I'm concerned about the prospects at the 5 especially - if Jared leaves after one year, then they will need not just a big man but one who's ready to play a lot immediately in 2011-12 - it's very tough to get guys like that & there doesn't appear to be any in Ohio in the 2011 class. Amir Williams may be the key guy for 2011 but it will be tough to beat MSU for a Detroit kid given the success they've had lately.

I just don't see Sullinger being a one and done. I think his father and JJ might convince him to give Ohio State a lace 2 years. Even if he does stay for another year, we will need a quality backup man. I thought that Sampson was leaning towards Michigan State. I know that he is a little bit smaller than Williams but how many big guys who want to play early can Michigan State take in one class. It will be an interesting summer to say the least when it comes to basketball recruiting for Ohio State.

From a guy who used to coach at Milton a couple ago

Royal is 6’7” and plays post for Milton. Parker is a guard, but seemed to play point more last year than Scott.

I guess the reason that Royal has an offer and Parker does not is because they are 2 different types of players.
