Potential replacements for Alan Major, left, could include Joel Cornette and LaVall Jordan. Both were assistants at Butler and Iowa under Todd Lickliter, who was fired by the Hawkeyes at the end of the season.

Evan Turner's announcement last week that he will enter the NBA draft and not play his final year at Ohio State leaves a scholarship open for next season.

But coach Thad Matta said he is not planning to offer it to any of the high-profile point guards who remain uncommitted in the class of 2010. The spring signing period begins Wednesday.

Rather, Matta intends to bank Turner's scholarship while he surveys the landscape for big men who can help the Buckeyes in 2011 and beyond.
Ohio State's immediate focus in recruiting is on size, Matta said, because Dallas Lauderdale will be a senior and Zisis Sarikopoulos a junior next season, and the only other post player on the roster will be freshman Jared Sullinger.

Post players or forwards who reportedly have been offered scholarships for 2011 are 6-foot-10 Amir Williams of Detroit; 6-9 Cody Zeller of Washington, Ind.; 6-7 Jakarr Sampson of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary; and 6-7 Julian Royal of Alpharetta, Ga.

Royal is a high school teammate of point guard Shannon Scott, who is committed to signing with Ohio State in November.

It will be a huge surprise if the consensus #1-#2 high school player of this year is not a one-and-done next year. We better count on his departure, because history shows it to be likely.
you might want to read post #528 of his thread regarding his pro potential--high school and the NBA are really different... no kidding

In looking at the above rosters for the various teams, especially on a couple of them that have Ohio ties, there seemed to be some kids with pretty big size to them. I was curious to know if anyone knew about the guys on the All Ohio Red and King James teams.

You're comparing apples to oranges here--name one recent 6'9" power forward who was a consensus #1-2 high school player and who was one-and-done.

I'll be surprised if Jared Sullinger is a one and done. I won't be surprised if he is Big Ten Freshman of the year. Jared game just isn't the one and done type. You really can't explain it or support it either way. The whole he is the #2 prospect means he has to be a one and done is just (I'm struggling for the right word) not right.

How different is Sullinger's game from Kevin Love who was a one and done?

Well Kevin Love is one of the most gifted passers as a big man that has come across the basketball scene in a while.

Though we don't know how good of a rebounder Sullinger will be at the college level, it wouldn't surprise me if Love was a better rebounder too, though I'm holding out hope Sullinger can be just as good. Love also striked me as a better outside shooter, but this was before Sullinger's recent development of a three point shot.

I don't know how anyone can say he definitely is, or definitely isn't, going to be a one-and-done player at this point. I've seen "experts" predict both ways. Feeling strongly about it either way is fine but it's pretty naive to think that the counter opinion is baseless.

Personally, from a pure talent standpoint (excluding non-financial considerations) I think he's gone, but I'd put it at about 60/40 right now.

Kevin Love was 6'10 260 while Sully was measured in at 6'8 3/4 (pretty sure this is what Ford said) and like 282 pounds. Both heights in shoes. Your going to say an inch and 1/4, that doesn't matter, but it does. Love is a better shooter also and can play the PF position in the NBA. Can Sully?

And I agree the NBA is about potential and not production. That's why Jared won't be the #1 pick. He doesn't have the amount of potential because of his frame. He will be very productive here, atleast I feel he will.
