OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

What?

OSU has produced more nba players than all programs except ky......I believe

The amazing thing about Thad Matta is what he has done without, for the most part, elite NBA-level talent.

OSU has become one of the best, most consistent programs in the nation, and they've mostly done it on the backs of solid 4-year players along with a few borderline NBA prospects. Oden and Conley being the exception in '07, and Sullinger being the exception in '11-12. Otherwise, the key cogs in the OSU program have been guys like Je'Kel Foster, Jamar Butler, David Lighty, Jon Diebler, Evan Turner (developed into NPOY after 3 years with Matta), Will Buford, and Aaron Craft. All solid, 3-4 year players who fit the mold of what Thad Matta wants on his team. If Matta continues to recruit this type of player, he will continue to have much success.

It may be his last year, if he wants to turn pro and earn a living playing basketball, that's his choice. But I am doubtful about his NBA future - if he's going to turn pro regardless of his stock, obviously it won't matter but if he's only going to go if he's a first round pick, then his stock will matter. Thomas can score, but the NBA is loaded with guys who can score who are significantly bigger and more athletic than DT, and play a lot better defense.

A lot of people talked about Buford being an early entry, he was more athletic than Thomas + a better defender, and a higher rated recruit, and he wasn't even drafted ... I think there is a significant number of Buckeye fans that post on message boards that overrate some of these guys when it comes to NBA draft stock. I think we should consider a projection where everybody but Ravenel comes back next season, because that is a distinct possibility.

If CJ Miles can earn a living as a left-handed chucker in the NBA, I have no doubts DT will be playing in the league next year.

If Kyle Korver and Jason Kapono can earn a living in the NBA, than Deibler shouldn't have any problem doing so, right??

It doesn't work as easy as that...

I have some doubt that Deshaun is a NBA rotation player, mainly because he is such a tweener...

Dude can score the rock though...

I said elite-level, not guys who get drafted and don't make an impact. It remains to be seen what exactly will become of Koufos and Mullens, but I have my doubts they will ever become household names. Daequan Cook left too early and is relegated to very few minutes as a 3-point specialist.

Some very nice Central Ohio freshman basketball players especially one:)
He?s tall and athletic. He can post up, handle the basketball and shoot from the perimeter. And, by the way, he?s only a freshman.

Seth Towns of Northland is the crown jewel of a talented freshman class in central Ohio that many observers are comparing with one some 20 years ago that produced major-college prospects such as Kenny Gregory and Michael Redd.

?Seth Towns is going to bring recruiters from all over the country to Columbus,? said Jerry Watson, longtime director of All-Ohio Basketball. ?He?s not Jared Sullinger yet, but he shows big-time potential. He?s a multidimensional-type player. ? He can play all over the floor, he has a high basketball IQ and he plays on a top-notch team that should allow him to flourish.?
Among the top first-year players this year are guards Kyran McClure of Westerville South, Tyus Ferguson of Groveport, Seth Fuller of Dublin Coffman, and Jalen Tate and D.J. Tyree of Pickerington Central; and forwards Luke Vargo of Coffman, James Manns of Marion-Franklin, Malik Harrison of Walnut Ridge, Houston Smith of Africentric, Nick Ward of Gahanna and Jimmy Ratliff of Hilliard Davidson.

Some of those last names might ring a bell. McClure?s father, Kelly, was a former Westerville South, Otterbein and European pro player. Tate?s father, Jermaine, played for Ohio State and Cincinnati, and his brother, Jae?Sean, is an Ohio State recruit. Ward?s father, Jeff, was a standout at Brookhaven and Tiffin, and Ratliff?s father and namesake played at Ohio State.

?A lot of coaches are reluctant to play freshmen on the varsity,? Watson said, ?but most of these kids are either starting or contributing, and if you?re logging minutes at a program like Westerville South, Pickerington Central and Dublin Coffman, that?s a big indicator of how talented these players.?

Men's basketball: OSU Insider

Outside the lines

Pickings that are left in the 2013 class are slim, but Ohio State coaches aren?t done trying to fill at least one more position. Ravenel's departure after this season will leave Amir Williams and Trey McDonald as the only posts in the program. Recently, the Buckeyes offered a scholarship to 6-foot-9, 235-pound Gavin Schilling, a Chicagoan playing at Findlay Prep in Nevada. Schilling lists Ohio State among 10 schools he is considering. Last night, one of Matta's assistants reportedly was in Fayetteville, N.C., to check out 6-10, 230-pound Sidy Mohamed Djitte, who is beginning to attract interest from major programs.

The recruiting itinerary for last week took some of the coaches, including Matta yesterday, to Kettering, Ohio, for the annual Flyin’ To The Hoop invitational tournament. At least four prospects the Buckeyes are known to be recruiting played in the four-day event, which ends tonight. Two assistant coaches were there on Friday to watch 2013 big man Gavin Schilling, a Chicagoan playing at Findlay Prep in Nevada this season. Yesterday, Matta saw 2014 guard Justin Jackson, a former Cincinnatian living in Houston, score 41 points against Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary and 2016 standout V.J. King. Last night, 2015 big man Elijah Thomas of Prime Prep in Dallas was in action, and he is again tonight.

After watching Schilling struggle mightily today, and Djitte's highlights making him look very raw, I have to say I strongly prefer that Matta just wait it out until the spring and not add any HS frosh because I don't think these guys will be contributors next year when OSU needs them. I think OSU needs to add a JC big or a graduate transfer. It's hard to imagine a graduate transfer not seeing OSU as an attractive option considering the "starting" center is leaving the program two years in a row and no one else being added. I know it's hard to get good big men, but it is just frustrating to see so few good options for a program that has put a lot of bigs in the pros lately and has a lot of talent for a big man to play with.

The only problem with that is finding a "big" graduate transfer. Graduate transfers are hard to come by anyway and it will be even more difficult to find one who is a "big" and good. I think the JUCO route might be a little easier but we do need some help for next year unless McDonald/Williams improve greatly.

Harder still to find one who is big and good and yet fits within that range between good enough to help OSU and good enough for the NBA.

RT ‏@BSnowScout Dave Bell's HS coach Sonny Johnson says his junior center has committed to Ohio State
We just got a committment from Dave Bell out of Garfield Heights. Apparently another 6'7 player which I find a little weird. Not sure if we are going to have room for some of Okafor's teammates.

2014 BTW.

Edit: Actually ESPN profile listing him as 6'9 which would make more sense

Recruiting has fallen into a bit of a slump for Coach Matta recently. The game against the Whosyers revealed what team is currently atop the B1G when it comes to young talent; Buckeyes are no better than third and possibly as low as 5th, with little hope of moving upward in 2013 or 2014.
