OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

The magic number is 925 I believe. Each kid who starts out the year on ship earnes 2 points for remaining and being eligible ( having satisfied some minimum requirements ). The total points earned is divided by the total possible and then that is multiplied by 1000 ( from what I gather ).

If your 4-year running total dips below 925 you are subject to penalties. I believe that we first slipped below it last year ( in no small part because of Oden's 2 point loss since he didn't finish the year and didn't stay eligible BOTH by quitting mid-quarter in the Spring ). But the AD weaseled their way out of a penalty by submitting a plan for improving and whatever other BS they had to say to get "a pass" for that year ( 2008-2009 school year based on the 4 years before ).

So they got out of it but then their "plan for improvement" etc. were obliterated by KK doing the same THING a year later on them. SO now they not only can't weasel out of it again ( thus facing a 1 bagger for sure ) but may get dinged for not holding up their end of the "weasel contract" that got them out of a one ship penalty last season. My take is they may want to try to get out of further penalty by suffering a 2-bagger this coming year and hoping that will "satisfy the hunger" of the APR beast! LMFAO It is all a big STUPID IDIOTIC GAME to give more people fake jobs and create less opportunities for kids. NCAA at its finest!

What I'm not sure of is how they can escape future penalty. Both Crater and BJM left early ( even tho both were in fine shape eligibility/GPA-wise from what I gather ) so they lose two more points again ( one each instead of two for KK or GO ). But you'd think it'd still weigh down the APR number. Maybe they finally ditch Mayes' cargo so its a wash or something. I thought "team GPA" would help but it doesn't seem to mean anything to the 925 formula - only individual points earned does.

It's such a silly mess! They pull ships that could go to kids as some retroactive punishment for losing kids earlier ( when most, in our case, are leaving for the NBA ). How about cleaning up the TRUE SLEAZE and the coaches booting players ( did I read that MN terminated 2 guys before their eligibility was used up? ) and stop with the limiting opps BS? The NCAA blows! They emphasize parity, cost-cutting by lowering ships, punishments for silly things and loopholes for truly sleazy ploys, making work so their staff/size remains HUGE etc. It's a sad JOKE and they should blow up the book and start fresh!

I am in total agreement with everything there you have said in your post.

There are two threads on here that discuss APR. One discusses the APR in more general terms and the other is more basketball specific. The last post in each of these threads is about one year old. Since I have not seen any formal release from Ohio State regarding their APR situation, I have no idea how many scholarships we have lost. Maybe Bruno will step up to the microphone and say something one of these days.

I didn't think we were in any problem since we aren't giving out any scholarships in 2009 but I guess I forgot about Crater leaving, Wallace transferring, and Mullens leaving early even though all three of them left in good academic standing. I thought when someone left that the university got a 1 point hit even if the player was in good academic standing when they left.

I have no idea what is going to happen but maybe when the NBA gets a new CBA and extends the period they kids have to stay in college that will solve some of the issues. Maybe the NCAA is cutting us some slack because of the fact that we are still on quarters while most other colleges are on semesters. I have no idea.

I actually don't think Wallace hurt, nor Cook or Conley, because they both finished out the year and left in good academic standing. So I don't think they cost us any points actually.

The problem with GO and KK is they cost us 2 because they didn't finish or leave in good standing - due to taking the dreaded zero-point-zero for the Spring quarter. Crater and BJM cost us 1 each because they didn't finish the year, but only one because they finished in good academic standing. At least that is what I've been told. I've also heard that Syl Mayes cost us 2, BTW.

I would think that if we don't give out any scholarships in 2009, and things are looking that way, that the slate will be clean until another one and done comes along or another malcontent leaves the program.

Well even with one and done like Mullens this year, he was not enrolled in classes...Greg thought he had disenrolled...KK fucked us over...

With the loss of Payne we should now have room for a PF/C type to go along with a PG...

I don't want to waste the ships tho...

I would say guys like Painter, Payne, Ferguson, Weatherspoon are names we will see come up...

We will still take a pg and Joseph is still at the top of the list...

I hope you meant "with the loss of Wright" :)

Losing Wright was no surprise. Hope he winds up somewhere he can make a difference. Wish the Buckeyes make a run at a PG. Would like to add one in this year, but I figure they know what they are doing. Another big would be a good addition (Payne).

Personally, I would like the staff to focus on getting more athletic in the frontcourt............I like size........but we need more athletic players in the post that want to rebound and defend.

I am taking for granted we will find an elite point guard for 2010.........

No ships open this year...so no movement on payne or a pg...

and yeah I meant wright not payne...

I'm having trouble following your posts/thoughts. No ships open this year has nothing to do with 2010 recruits like Payne or the PGs we are after in 2010 like Pressey, Joseph and Dority.

Some think Wright's decommit may open up a slot for Weatherspoon. I like 'Spoon, but we need a PG and a long PF more at this point so I would wait on him a bit.

My bad has too many thoughts running thru my head at the time...what I meant to say was in respect to maybe going after Painter or a PG in the 09 class...twoodbuck said something about adding a pg this year, and I was thikning that maybe we could get back in the running for Painter...

But we should have 2 open by my count for 2010...

#1 priority for the staff is to find a quality point guard........next on the list would be an athletic 4..............

Matta has gone on the record saying he didn't expect to add anyone prior to next season........so they are moving forward with the horses they have now and looking at adding to the 2010 class and beyond.........
