OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

2023 gavin headings

really good tape for a 6'7" (probably 6'5"ish) freshman. even better that he will go to pick central (after transferring from coffman). have to imagine that ho1tmann will set headings as priority #1 for 2023. quite a rarity to see a local player that young with that height with those ballhandling and playmaking skills. some of the interior footwork is impressive, too. definitely one to watch.

Cruz, the No. 5 shooting guard and No. 20 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite, is a native of New Jersey, but announced in April that he would be transferring to the prestigious Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. The basketball powerhouse has an impressive track record of producing some top-tier NBA talent, including players among the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant and Rajon Rondo.

With still two years left in his high school career, Cruz has already spent some time in the national spotlight. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound guard participated in the USA Basketball Men's Junior Team minicamps in both 2018 and 2019, and was named one of 18 finalists for the USA Basketball U16 National Team in May of last year. In addition, Cruz was also named a MaxPreps Freshman All-American honorable mention in 2019.

Currently holding at least 13 offers, Ohio State adds their name to the list alongside other top programs including Kentucky, Louisville, St. Johns, and Syracuse, among others. With likely a long way to go until he makes any sort of decisions, expect Cruz’s recruitment to ramp up significantly before things are said and done, especially with the added exposure he’ll receive at Oak Hill. Holtmann will be hoping to have earned himself some additional brownie points by being one of Cruz’s early offers.

Scoop On The Road: Roderick Coffee

Here at Buckeye Scoop, we like to get out on the road and see as many Buckeye targets or commits as possible. In late June we did that by making numerous stops to high schools or work out facilities in the Cleveland area

One of our stops was to one of Ohio’s top shooters and fast-rising prospect Roderick Coffee from Harvey High School near Cleveland. On June 15th when college coaches could first contact 2022 prospects one college that Coffee heard from was the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ever since an electric junior season, he has seen his recruitment take off. As of today he holds three divisions one offers from Alabama A&M, Youngstown State, and UT Martin but he has heard from nearly 20 schools since contact opened up. With his shooting stroke and ability to put the ball in the basketball Coffee’s recruitment is very likely to see a big uptick. While he may not end up an Ohio State level recruit his ability to shoot the ball is undeniable.

Scoop On The Road: Chris Livingston

Here at Buckeye Scoop, we like to get out on the road and see as many Buckeye targets or commits as possible. In late June we did that by making numerous stops to high schools or work out facilities in the Cleveland area

One of our stops was to one of the lesser unknown schools in Ohio that still holds a lot of talent in 2022 five-star prospect and Ohio State wing offer Chris Livingston who just enrolled at Warren Reserve Academy this past winter. Livingston was offered by the Buckeyes almost two years ago in the fall going into his freshman season. Ever since his middle school years, Livingston has been pegged as the next big thing to come out of the Buckeye state, and through two seasons of high school basketball he has lived up to that billing. The Monday prior to our stop at WRA college coaches could begin contacting 2022 basketball prospects directly which meant Livingston’s phone has been very busy recently. Some of those coaches in contact with him were of course Ohio State’s Chris Holtmann and Ryan Pedon.

Here's one of the five:

Rayvon Griffith, Taft High School (Cincinnati, Ohio), 6-foot-5, Wing

Coming into last winter when the high school basketball season started in Ohio, Griffith was the 2023 prospect that garnered the most attention by evaluators -- and for good reason. Early last season in the second game of his freshman year I got to see Griffith play live against Richmond Heights and the long-term upside was evident. Standing at a legitimate 6-foot-5, he had the most athleticism out of anyone on the court -- and keep in mind Ohio State 2022 offer Josiah Harris was playing against him. At the same game were Ohio State basketball coaches Chris Holtmann, Ryan Pedon, and Jake Diebler. In short, even Ohio State’s coaches have known about Griffith since early in his high school career.

Right now Griffith’s game is predicated on being the better athlete than the man in front of him and getting to the rim. He is also very good in the post when working face up or with his back to the basket. Griffith also has a good handle, but it will have to improve before he is totally ready for the college game. And it will. As for his shooting stroke, it is a work in progress. It needs a little tuning and smoothing up before it is something he can rely on. But once his shot catches up to his athleticism and toughness there is no telling how good he can be.

Through his first high school season and without AAU, Griffith holds three offers from Oklahoma State, Alabama A&M, and Grambling State. He has also received interest from a plethora of schools such as Xavier, UCLA, and Ohio State. All signs point to Griffith being the best 2023 in Ohio, so don’t be surprised if Ohio State enters the mix before too long.

kinda think the interest from both sides is serious. not sure how the recruiting dead period being extended until at least september comes into play, though. no "smoke" or so-called intel. just think this one's an interesting fit for at least a couple reasons.

obviously still assuming that branham is at the top of osu's board.
expectations are that bufkin will be a weasel.

the 5-star of all 5-stars, emoni bates, has committed to michigan state.

years down the road, you just know they'll try to claim him as a spartan despite him never playing as a spartan.

edit: like we do with lebron.
scratch that. seems far more likely that bates reclassifies and plays at msu for a season. it's either that or bates plays in the developmental league (or whatever it's called now), which i doubt he'll do. what i'm certain of is that bates won't spend his 2022-23 season by wasting it in high school. anyone assuming or advising otherwise is a fool.

and with 5-star max christie committing to msu, izzo might be at the center of the college basketball world for 2021-22.

Izzo rolling big time
maybe the numbers don't bear it out, but, compared to most major programs, it also seems as though izzo has been less affected by players transferring out. "less affected" is a very passive way of saying that izzo tends to know what kind of player he wants and, more importantly, the players know what to expect. rarely do you get the impression that izzo and his players are on different pages. to be sure, his players generally don't search for the exits at the first sign of turbulence.
