OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

back in march, 10 players were selected for d1 first-team all-ohio. 8 were seniors, 1 was a junior, and 1 was a sophomore. that sophomore was sean jones. heck, of the 80+ players who composed the first, second, third, special-mention, and honorable-mention teams, only 5 players were underclassmen (freshmen or sophomores).

it would have been impressive for a sophomore just to make honorable mention all-state. but first team? kid's special. in my opinion, an offer from osu is a foregone conclusion unless another point guard surprises with an early commitment. doubt that happens. in the end, i think our 2022 point guard will be jones... if he wants to be a buckeye. that being said, he very well might end up being a young man who wants to leave hometown for college, so i'm not going to assume anything. may be wrong, but i don't get the sense that jones bleeds scarlet.

also notable is that the d2 awards were similarly dominated by upperclassmen until you get to special mention and below. mcmillan is another rarity as a sophomore who made first team.

Monday was a whirlwind for the 2022 college basketball recruiting class. Almost all of the nation’s top prospects heard from college basketball coaches from across the country. Chris Holtmann and Ohio State was not going to miss out on such a busy day.

Below is a handful of recruits in the 2022 recruiting class that the Buckeyes’ staff has spoken with in the past couple days. It is unknown if any scholarships have been offered, but expect a few to be announced in the coming days.

this may be like that previous transfer (whose name i can't remember) who recently announced his shortlist of suitors, which included ohio state. it was then immediately clarified that osu was not interested in the transfer if for no other reason than that we simply don't have the space.

unless there is a waiver, yor anei is a sit-one, play-two 6'10" pf/c from okie state. averaged 8 & 5 with 2 blocks over 2 seasons. pretty much everyone would like to have him. but, again, we have nothing currently available.

Top 20 point guard Bruce Thornton talks options

p03q7y6oxmbp2c6xidjj

Bruce Thornton's phone blew up on June 15 with college coaches contacting him on the first day they could directly reach out to prospects in the 2022 class. But even before the 15th, Thornton collected several new offers recently.

Indiana, Ohio State and Purdue offered in the last couple weeks. On Monday, the No. 19 overall prospect in the 2022 Rivals150 received offers from Auburn, Maryland and Wake Forest. Louisville has been one of the new schools to show interest.

Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia (where his dad played football and his mother played basketball), Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Miami, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Xavier offered in the past year as well.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Thornton discussed his most recent offers and the program he has family ties to.

Auburn: “Their team can really shoot it and use a lot of ball screens. I went down there for a game. It was a packed crowd and loud.”

Georgia: “I talked to Coach [Tom] Crean and Coach [Chad] Dollar. We didn’t even really talk basketball. I watched them play this year and they have a fast-paced offense that I like.”

Indiana: “That offer surprised me. They had a Hall of Famer in Isaiah Thomas. That’s a big basketball school."

Maryland: “The whole coaching staff played point guard, so they can help me become a better point guard.”

Ohio State: “They have a lot of history. Shannon Scott played there and he’s from Milton.”

Purdue: “They really want to build a relationship. They brought three different coaches down to see me. They really put in the time to recruit me.”

Wake Forest: “They are a new coaching staff so they are trying to find top players to come in. We had a good conversation.”

Kind of funny that Walker posts an article where he is skeptical about OSU landing any of their current 2021 big man offers but then finishes by saying that if they offer Wiz soon, Wiz becomes their best chance. And then immediately thereafter OSU offers Wiz.

I pictured Holtmann reading the article and saying to himself, "That's a good point, Mick. Guess I'm calling Gabe today!"
