OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

until he meets the deadline to withdraw his name or publicly declares that returning to school won't be an option, i'm not assuming that we have a scholarship available. otherwise, kaleb's father is a liar at worst or severely misguided at best.
Kaleb is a grown man and makes his own decisions, and what his father wants or plans for him now is beside the point.

Buckeyes Make Final Group for Santa Clara Transfer Guard Trey Wertz

Trey-Wertz-1125x780.jpg

Former Santa Clara guard Trey Wertz announced his final seven schools on Friday as he looks to transfer to a new home. Ohio State was one of those seven, as were North Carolina, Virginia, Notre Dame, Arizona, Butler, and Oklahoma.

Wertz (6-4 185) just finished up his sophomore season where he averaged 11.9 points and 3.9 assists per game. This came after a freshman season where he averaged 12.2 points and 4.6 assists per game.

He started 58 of his 62 career games. This past season he shot 48.9% from the field overall and 40.0% from three-point range.

Wertz scored a season-high 31 points in January against Pacific, but posted double figures just four more times over the final 11 games, scoring more than 13 points just once in that final stretch.

Wertz will have to sit out next year, but will then have two years of eligibility remaining.

With Kaleb Wesson’s assumed departure, along with DJ Carton’s announced transfer and Alonzo Gaffney’s reported departure, the Buckeyes do have one scholarship spot available.

While there is no in-person recruiting allowed, Wertz has been able to take a virtual tour of the Ohio State campus.

Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann has been a vocal proponent of bringing in transfers who have to sit a year. It allows them to learn the system and integrate into the culture. He has also said that since there really aren’t enough minutes to play all 13 scholarship players on the team anyway, you don’t really lose anything by having a scholarship or two locked up in a sitting transfer.

Of the options that OSU seems to be on the short list for, I would rate AJ Walker 1st, Burton 2nd, and Wertz 3rd.

They are three different types of guards (Burton a physical 6'4 CG with an improving shot, Wertz a smooth 6'4 scorer/ballhandler, Walker a prototypical 6'2 PG who is improving his facilitation) but stats-wise their overall quality is comparable--last season averages, efficiency, A:TO, all roughly in the same ballpark as far as offensive guard play is concerned. So then I look at their physical attributes and level of competition they played in college and who I think would fit best at OSU and in the B1G. By which measure I am going Burton 1st, Wertz a close 2nd, and Walker a couple paces back at 3rd.

I would be pretty happy if we landed any of the 3, but with Walker I would have the biggest question mark about how much his game would translate to this level. Both Burton and Wertz have a bonus, too, where they were plus rebounders at their former schools. I think what gives Burton the edge for me is that he is easily the best defender of the three and he played the best comp while on a solid team and has been coached well. Also, the way Burton improved his shot from his frosh to soph seasons from 30 to 40% even as the line moved out more... it shows he has the work ethic and potential to be a phenomenal two-way player--not to mention good size, length, strength, and athleticism for a college guard.

It is a close call to me between AJ and Jamarious. Style preference and needs for the roster could change who comes out ahead. I just think AJ is the more dynamic scorer, and that gives him the edge in my mind.

Luther Muhammad ;-)
feel like i should quote my initial comment that kicked off this discussion.

if burton decides as quickly as evans predicts, then i don't see osu as the landing spot. we'd be in a much better position if a scholarship were available... and i'm not just referring to kaleb or even any other player on the roster. moreso referring to the maxed-out roster, which ho1tmann apparently loves to have despite prior statements.

most blue-chip grad transfers have only one season remaining. as such, they're looking for a clear-cut path to immediate playing time. as long as a possible destination does not have a scholarship definitively available, that grad transfer is much less likely to pick or perhaps even entertain that program as his destination. even though a program might end up having a scholarship soon become available, there is nothing certain until that scholarship is 100% available.

now that muhammad has definitively decided to leave the program, osu should be in a much better position for the guys at the top of our board.
