OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Carlik Jones has eliminated us.

Staff expects Kaleb gone and wants to use that scholarship spot on a lead guard who will have eligibility beyond next season. Of the current targets we have reached out to, that leaves Trey Wertz, AJ Walker, and Jamarius Burton.

Chris Holtmann, Ohio State in touch with Santa Clara transfer

After adding Seth Towns, the Buckeyes are still searching the portal for talent.

“I’ve been in touch with Coach Pedon and Coach Holtmann. They’re just telling me they have a real opportunity at the point guard spot and think I’m a really good fit for them and their program.” The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Wertz told Land-Grant Holy Land.

A Charlotte, North Carolina native, and Providence Prep product, Wertz was a three-star prospect in 2018. Even though he grew up in the south, and moved to the west coast to attend Santa Clara, it doesn’t mean he isn’t familiar with Ohio State basketball.

“I was a big D’Angelo Russell fan when he was at OSU so I used to watch a lot of those games. He would probably be the first person that comes to mind. But other than that they’ve had some really good teams over the years and have always been a great program.” Wertz said.

Just one of the hot names on the market at the moment, Wertz, who averaged around 12 points per contest, broke the school’s freshman assist record, and named a two time All-WCC selection during his career with the Broncos, has a long list of college coaches trying to bring into the fold. Looking more deeply into 11 programs, Ohio State is up against some rather stiff competition for his services. Arizona, Butler, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and Xavier are also among the potential landing spots for Wertz.

Not able to make trips to campuses, Trey isn’t sure when he’ll shut his transfer down and announce where he’ll suit up the next couple of seasons, but he does know exactly what he’s looking for in a program before he does make his choice known.

“Right now, I have no timetable for my decision.” He added. “I’m just really looking for the best overall fit and situation for me both academically and athletically. I think I’ll just bring a player who’s competitive, can shoot and score as well as make plays for myself and others. They’ve all done a great job in this short period of time of getting me up to speed on each of their programs. I can’t really put one ahead of the other right now.”

Trey Wertz, a transfer guard who spent two years at Santa Clara, got the full Ohio State experience. He took a look at the campus. He saw the facilities. He sat down with the coaching staff.

But he wasn’t in Columbus.

Wertz and his father were sitting in front of a computer at home on Monday as head coach Chris Holtmann and assistant coach Ryan Pedon led them through an hour-long “virtual visit” of Ohio State via Zoom.

“The presentation kind of went like it would normally go if I was able to take a visit and then come to their office and sit down,” Wertz told Eleven Warriors on Tuesday. “It was almost like a powerpoint presentation that they did. The virtual part of it was they had videos of the school, of campus, facilities and stuff like that. And then the other part is kind of the presentation they would normally give if I was actually on campus with them.”

Pedon had contacted Wertz on Sunday to set up the virtual visit, which is the best coaches can do right now since prospects are banned from on-campus recruiting visits due to concerns about COVID-19.

“It was definitely helpful,” Wertz said. “I thought it would be going into it, and it ended up being just as kind of what I thought. With this whole virus thing, it's going to be almost impossible to go visit schools. And even if it was to open back up, it still wouldn't be the same because nobody's actually on the campus.”

Wertz, who put his name in the portal early last week, fits the description of what Ohio State’s looking for in a transfer guard as someone who’d need to sit out the 2020-21 season before having multiple remaining years of eligibility.

As a sophomore at Santa Clara in 2019-20, the 6-foot-4, 185-pound combo guard averaged 11.9 points, 3.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 28.6 minutes per game as a starter. He shot 48.9 percent from the field, 40.0 percent from 3-point range and 75.7 percent from the free-throw line. He sees his biggest strengths as shooting, playmaking, scoring, size and his ability to play both on and off the ball.

“A lot of (teams) kind of rave about my best basketball is ahead of me, and they all want to be part of that process in helping me get better and ultimately helping their program get better,” Wertz said.

If Holtmann is going to bring in another player for next season I hope it is a grad transfer because I do not want him bringing in a guy who can sit one and play two or even one. If he does the latter it will probably take us out of the running for guys like Brown, Branham, Whitt, and possibly Bediako. I know the chances might be slim on a couple of these guys but if he does not have any scholarships to give there is no chance at all. Maybe he moved too fast on Meechie and Etzler but I have no idea what he was thinking.

if burton decides as quickly as evans predicts, then i don't see osu as the landing spot. we'd be in a much better position if a scholarship were available... and i'm not just referring to kaleb or even any other player on the roster. moreso referring to the maxed-out roster, which ho1tmann apparently loves to have despite prior statements.

There have been four departures this offseason, counting Kaleb who has made up his mind to leave, and there are three newcomers in line to join the team in their places. You are dead wrong that there isn't a spot open for Burton right now, and I also know Coach Holt knows more than you as far as whether there is a likelihood of an additional "unscheduled" departure.

:roll2:

Kaleb is gone. Andre is gone. DJ is gone. Alonzo is gone. That is four.

Seth Towns, Zed Key and Eugene Brown are coming. That is three.

Obviously there is room for a Coach Holt to add a guard, and since there is currently no backup PG, they need someone who can play next year. Burton could be that guy, provided the NCAA adopts the rule change that allows one-time transfers immediate eligibility as expected.

Maybe show your angst about scholarships some other time.
