OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

I like Tape's tape.

Seems pretty mobile for a guy his size, I am not sure if I see enough skill differentiation from Young, though. I guess better on the block.

I have more mixed feelings about the team context, though, because I'd like to see Liddell starting and Gaffney firmly in the rotation next season. Tape might clutter the frontcourt up to much for that. But we might REALLY need help from a player like Tape down low if Diallo doesn't develop enough and Key isn't ready.

His stats are okay but playing at a mid-major, eh, I dunno. He turned it over too much last season and, man, I am so over turnovers right now, ha.

If an extra scholarship opens up besides Kaleb I do think I'd prefer it go to a reclassified guard like Greer or Whitt. Not sure Tape is good enough to take away minutes from our young forwards.

It seems like now the big recruiting class where Holt was getting Jaedon LeDee, Luther, Duane and Justin is not panning out quite like expected. I suppose we need to cut Holt some slack on that class since it was guys he was recruiting at Butler mostly, and there was not much time to put the class together. I am not sure Holt completely understands and accepts that he needs slightly better talent than he had at Butler in order to succeed at a high level in the B1G.

I feel like there has been some degree of institutional ignorance in the OSU hoops program of the exact type of talent needed and the time and effort it takes in finding them. OSU has to outwork other high major programs to find late bloomers and/or under the radar future stars, and they just haven't been doing that over the past several seasons. I think they as a whole are shortchanging the program somewhat by not insisting on landing a higher talent level player. Just one superstar makes a team like this dramatically better. Maybe my concerns have been already addressed and future talent will be better, but most of the sophomore group does not inspire much confidence.

The Sophomore group doesn't inspire confidence. Carton and Liddell have potential, the other two guys have a ways to go. Key and Brown, maybe they will be great players but they aren't the type of guys that Thad brought in to make this program great.

I'm concerned about Holtmann's ability to build a B1G title contender

Wow, you guys are off the boat already huh. I know we have not been playing well but sheesh, this big 10 sched is a grind man, we will eventually go on a win streak once we get back in sync and shots start falling again once we adjust to the conference play...there are no easy wins in conference this year once they accept that and buckle down and play ball the ship will right itself

will be interesting to see what the staff does if both kaleb and carton depart. i'm assuming that a transfer with immediate availability would be added. do they go with a point guard or a post player, though?
Well, one of them is going to have to go but I think we lose both of them because we are over signed by one but you know that and I think we have lost DJ. Yes, you raise a question which I have been thinking about as the season starts to head towards March. PG or post player?

on one hand, the obvious answer seems to be a guard since the duo of walker and washington would be rather thin, while the 4 and 5 would be stocked with 5 players. on the other hand, even without carton, i still think the point guard position will be closer to what the staff expects/wants than the center position. walker and washington may not set the game on fire, but we're still comparing a couple of mostly productive upperclassmen to a sophomore project (diallo) and a true freshman (key). another way of phrasing that last sentence is that i think washington is more than acceptable as a developed combo guard who plays 10ish minutes per game at the point. i've thought since early on in duane's freshman season that his ideal trajectory is one that veers increasingly toward the point guard position.
If Carton leaves and I think he is going to and it is not his fault, I think the best answer would be for Holtmann to try and get a grad transfer PG. Unfortunately, I do not trust Washington as much as you do playing the PG position and I just cannot see Walker handling 25-30 minutes a game the entire season. I guess what I am trying to say is that I value a really good PG over a post player because I think we have some guys that could sort of fill-in at that position.

all that being said, though i think a grad transfer joining key in the front court would give us a bigger boost, i think ho1tmann succumbs to what scares him more: ballhandling depth. if so, i hope ho1tmann at least recognizes the team he has and shifts toward increased tempo, transition, and motion, which are not exactly his style. but i guess there will have to be a change regardless. unless we find a surprise in the post for next year, i'm not seeing a team that flourishes in the half court. key may be our only front court player who creates his own interior offense.
I think that Young and Key could give us some good minutes in the post position and pray that Diallo develops more during the summer. I do not know maybe I am dreaming but Holtmann has recruited so many wing players that I am like you and hope that he might change his style and play more up-tempo. It is really unfortunate that Holtmann over signed this season because that took us out of the running for Towns unless he can play the PG position:)
