OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

between blackmon, etzler, sullinger, and farmer, aor 16u looks like a team to watch. overall, ohio's 2021 class looks pretty strong. meechie johnson, etzler, seth wilson, malaki branham, trey woodyard, farmer, and sullinger are each players that should receiver interest from osu. really hoping jalen sullinger finds a growth spurt.

Malaki Branham emerges at Run 'N Slam
The Bill Hensley Memorial Run ‘N Slam is always one of the best opportunities for scouts to see underclass prospects for the first time on a big stage. With top talent from Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and other states coming in for the event, players emerge on the national radar.

While this example might never be repeated, Run ‘N Slam is where Anthony Davis went from virtual unknown with one mid-major scholarship offer, to five-star and potentially generational talent overnight.

There was no example like Anthony Davis this year, but one player who shined the brightest without the buzz coming in, was Malaki Branham.

Branham, who goes to St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, in Akron, is a 6-foot-4 combo guard with length, athleticism, and an ability to do a little bit of everything on the court.

...

On the recruiting side of things, it is early for Branham. He has a little bit of interest, but more programs are sure to take notice very soon.

“Duquesne, Akron and Ohio University have been talking to me, and Ohio State is interested in me some,” said Branham of his recruitment.

...

Currently Branham is unranked in the class of 2021, but that will change in a major way soon. Look for Branham to be one of the highest ranked prospects in the entire Midwest, and if he continues his strong improvement, he might become one of the most sought-after guards in the entire country.
Spiece Run-N-Slam
Malaki Branham – ’21 SG/SF Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary’s: We usually don’t repeat prospects from week to week on these recaps; however, when a player continues to play at an elite level they deserve the corresponding recognition, and that’s exactly why Branham makes the list again. The 6’5 wing from the Akron area was dynamic for his NEO Tru Game 16u team again this weekend, leading his squad to the Platinum Bracket title game, including a heated win over in-state rival OBC on Saturday in pool play. Branham has shown that he can be consistent from weekend to weekend with his aggressiveness, which was our only question mark on him, as he clearly has the skill-set, athleticism and raw ability to be a high level prospect. Heading into the spring Branham was arguably a top-five prospect in Ohio’s 2021 class; however, after the last two week’s he not only un-debatably top-five, but trending towards potentially overtaking the #1 spot in Ohio’s rising junior class.

name to remember for (much) later: mike sharavjamts.

sharavjamts was a freshman last year (2022 class). arrived before the start of the season to play at a small private school in xenia. from mongolia. yes, mongolia.

extremely impressive.

Without knowing his height and projected position... I would call him a point gaurd, kid needs to play against older kids pronto. He has a skillset that you get excited about

6'6", which makes his projection so tantalizing.

but what makes mike's future even more tantalizing...

mike shot 54% (22/41) behind the arc last season, though only 50% (16/32) from the line.
mike's dad is 7'0".
mike's dad was a harlem globetrotter for a few years in the early 2000s.

He's the type of kid that you just have to let his game blossom into what it's going to be, because making him work with countless trainers could potentially ruin something special if they don't taylor the training to his skillset...will definitely be keeping a close eye on this kids development

interesting that the first school mentioned is the one school that has not offered.

Bill Hensley Run 'N Slam Top Performers
Name: John Hugley

Class: 2020

247Sports Composite Ranking: No. 153

Recruiting: Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Xavier, Florida, Florida State, Cincinnati, Iowa, Kansas State

The 6-foot-9 Hugley is one of the better low post prospects in the Midwest. Though All-Ohio Red had an up and down weekend, Hugley was consistent with his play. Hugley has elite hands, a nice touch on the low block, and is a tremendous defensive rebounder. Also, Hugley has dropped weight which has allowed him to finish better over length, and he also is more mobile on the defensive end. Hugley did foul a little bit too much, but overall it was a very good showing for him, one that justified his explosion of offers in the last two weeks.

mentioned garvin clarke a few times in this thread (link). though osu looks past the point of getting a true point guard for 2020, clarke will be a player i'll watch going forward.
Name: Garvin Clarke

Class: 2020

247Sports Composite Ranking: Unranked

Recruitment: Youngstown State, Akron, Kent State, Cleveland State, Ohio University

Playing his first weekend with All-Ohio Red, it was a successful one for Clarke. He was tremendous as a scoring combo guard from day one, and he provided a lot punch and energy to the backcourt. Clarke is a bit undersized, and he isn't an athlete athlete, but he just knows how to get buckets. He can shoot it well from deep, and then also is good getting into the mid-range and finishing. The upside is a bit limited due to his physical size, but overall Clarke was very good, and put up big scoring numbers all weekend long.

snow also lists branham as one of the event's top performers. or the top performer, really. as long as branham has it together between his ears, an offer from osu should be coming pretty soon.

not so good for penn when all-ohio red's new point guard (who is also undersized) is already getting more pub.

Spiece Run-N-Slam
Garvin Clarke – ’20 PG Euclid: A highly anticipated addition to the All-Ohio Red 17u team, Clarke is a pass-first point guard ranked among the best players (regardless of position) in Ohio’s 2020 class. Now that he’s on the shoe circuit his reputation is only going to grow, as Clarke is a quick and strong guard who can create offense for his teammates in the pick and roll or in transition. A high IQ guard who makes the right pass but is just as good on the defensive end, if Clarke makes open jumpers in the Nike EYBL he’s going to see more NCAA D1 offers come his way soon.

So are we not going to grab another grad transfer center? Seems like we are just gonna roll with Wesson, Young, and Diallo if he doesn't redshirt. I guess unlike last year we have Gaffney to fill in when Kaleb inevitably gets in foul trouble.

days after sueing's visit to osu, which obviously ended without a commitment, osu's official twitter account just started following sueing. probably nothing, but...

a year of no games and a ton of practice for sueing to work on his 3-point shot. yeah, he would be terrific addition.

quite the battle next season between jallow and ahrens. sueing's playing time the following year would drastically limit the other available minutes at the 3, which is not even considering the expansion of liddell's game. jallow obviously has the upper hand on defense, but ahrens' role as a 3-point assassin might give the team a bigger boost.
