OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

I love the use of the 13th scholarship for a good sit out transfer. It is pretty rare that OSU has been able to score a marquee transfer. I am a bit surprised that there hasn't been a little more interest from other high major colleges in Sueing, but SF tends to be the easier position to fill and being a sit out transfer no doubt turns off a lot of coaches who don't want to sacrifice a scholarship spot for a year.

the 2021 recruiting class, which currently projects to go 4-deep, might end up being all ohioans -- or with 3 of the 4 being in-state kids. we look great for etzler, very good for meechie, and solid for branham. consider possibilities like seth wilson and jalen sullinger in the backcourt and we're still looking at ohio-born players worthy of an osu offer. i'm not sure how strong ohio's 2021 post players are projecting, though. power forward jalin billingsley might end up being the best among frontcourt players.

looks like the 2021 class will also be one that pulls in one player at each general position: pg, sg, sf, and pf/c.

It may seem like heresy, but, at this point, the 2 would seem to be our weakest position.
a reasonable scenario: kaleb does not depart this off-season, we have no transfers between now and next winter, and kaleb does depart after next season. under this scenario, we have no scholarships remaining to offer for 2020 until next spring.

is it still your position that the 2-guard is the weakest position? you trust diallo that much? you trust finding a quality mercenary during the 11th hour next year rather than taking loveday, dainja, et al. this year?

now if you could tell me today that kaleb will return for his senior season, that kaleb will absolutely be departing this off-season, or that someone else will be departing this off-season, then i'd agree that you take keon now and fill the remaining center position later. but given that we don't have those answers right now (as far as we fans know), i can't see how anything but a center is a greater need.

so you could say that the issue i have with your statement is the tense of the word "would." the word i think we need to think about is "will."

Both Muhammad and Washington are under-sized and thus far, unproven. I love both, and think they will become solid 4-year players (particularly Washington)
for college 2-guards, muhammad and washington are hardly all that undersized, especially muhammad since his defense (in the first 3/4 of the season) extended past his height. yeah, it would be great if they were an inch or two taller, but plenty of really good teams have had 2-guards at 6'3".

also, for the 2020-21 season, muhammad and washington will be juniors. i expect muhammad to start the bulk of next year's games. if so, that's at least 50 starts before his junior year. however, if it's not muhammad starting most of next year's games alongside carton/walker, then it will probably be washington. as good as keon is and will be, it will still be a challenge for him to supplant a couple juniors with a lot of experience.

listen, i love keon's game. search my posts. but our hierarchy of needs for 2020 with kaleb considering moving on and with diallo being very much the project, a center is an absolute must. it's easily the greatest priority.

now with all of that being stated, as i pointed out in keon's thread, the timing of sueing's commitment and keon's official tells me that there may be something going on behind the scenes in terms of personnel. whether that's kaleb, someone else, or nothing at all, it's anyone's guess.

All very good points. Given your hypothesis (Kaleb leaving after '19), I think you're right that a 4/5 (Hugley, Dainga, Loveday, etc) would be more important. But, I still believe we have a comparative weakness at the 2.

garvin clarke having a great weekend for aor. through 4 games, averaging 12.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.5 turnovers. solid game against a good aau opponent this morning despite not shooting all that well: 11 points, 15 rebounds (!!!), 7 assists, 1 steal, and 1 turnover.

all it takes is one weekend for the offers to start rolling in. not many better venues to be noticed than this one.

edit: in another game from yesterday, clarke had 17 points, 6 assists, 5 steals, and 0 turnovers. despite losing hugley, the team really turned things around when they added donovan johnson and added clarke to run the point. aor is leaving indianapolis 3-1 after a 1-3 record the first session.

as long as branham has it together between his ears, an offer from osu should be coming pretty soon.
with that now out of the way, an offer from osu to kalen etzler should be coming pretty soon.
with that now out of that way,... jalin billingsley? ej farmer? jalen sullinger? seth wilson?

my guess is we hold off a little bit on in-state offers unless it's billingsley, whom i think looks really, really good. a completely packaged power forward. would love for jalen to get one, but what position does he project to? if he were at least 6'4", he'd be a no-brainer. let's hope those genes start expressing themselves.

i'm not rooting for anyone to depart, but the 2021 in-state talent is deep enough that it would be nice to have 5 available scholarships instead of 4.

As well as Thad Matta recruited at his peak, his aiming at the top 10-20 guys in each class proved ultimately unsustainable. Holtmann is doing an astounding job of cleaning up on the 30-50 kids, which IMO is the key to sustainable success in the mold of Tom Izzo, Jay Wright and Jim Boeheim. And he seems also to be getting really good young men to come aboard.

I'm a very happy fan to have Chris Holtmann at the helm of the Buckeye program.

matta's recruiting was overall fine until the 2015 class. i mean, he was knocking it out of the park clear into 2014 with 5-star russell and #29 kbd. heck, until that 2015 class, most of his misses were of lower-ranked guys like bell, della valle, and mcdonald.

by no means would i consider meechie to osu a foregone conclusion. as such, offers to seth wilson and especially jalen sullinger make sense. i think jalen is worthy of an offer today no matter what happens with his height. what's the worst that's going to happen? he goes on a growth spurt and osu ends up with a 6'6" point guard?

now with that being stated, osu is in a position that it doesn't have to hurry with jalen.

billingsley is a very good looking in-state prospect for 2021. good feet and nice hands. completes with both hands over both shoulders. comfortable with the ball in his hands in the open court and when breaking down defenders. solid outside shot and a good passer. tailor-made for the high post. the full package for a power forward.

listed at 6'8", another inch or two would make a huge difference for osu since there is some overlap between him and etzler. unlike etzler, though, billingsley certainly has the frame for more weight to go along with his superior interior, back-to-the-basket game. i see a lot of high-major offers in billingsley's future.
