OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

As someone who doesn't following b-ball recruiting muchl, I was somewhat surprised to see the name Etzler pop-up. Apparently the nephew of former Buckeye captain Doug Etzler.
yep. fortunately and unsurprisingly, kalen is very much a buckeye fan like his buckeye family. and besides doug, lots of eztlers have played college ball. kid's future is bright. can't be an etzler if you don't have a nice jump shot.

This 2020 class seems to be becoming a class of quandaries. There seems to be a steady stream of new options to use the two spots they have open on, whether it be sit out transfers or preps, and no real indication who the top 1 or 2 priority recruits are, although it looks like SG or SF is highest on the list.
the one certainty appears to be that ho1tmann doesn't want a 2020 recruit under 6'5". save for burnett, all the attention paid to players shorter than that has dwindled to nothing.

which kinda makes the apparent interest in occeus so odd...

johnson plays for all-ohio red.

247 profile

High majors in heavy pursuit of Donovan Johnson
...

Johnson, a standout at Coraopolis (Pa.) Moon Area, is an intriguing wing prospect. Johnson has good size and length for the position and is a natural scorer. Through five games on the Gauntlet, he’s 11-for-26 from three, but he also showed he can score attacking the goal and in transition.

“Shooting the ball really well, getting in the lane, creating for myself and others,” Johnson said when asked to describe his game. “Just playing position-less basketball and just guarding all five positions. Post up when I need to, and play outside when I need to. I just pride myself in being an all-around player.”

...

“Michigan has come to see me workout,” he said. “Ohio State, Illinois, TCU, Pitt, Arizona, I’ve talked to a lot of coaches recently. I talk to Xavier a lot and they’ve come down to watch me work out."

“I’m going to take a visit to Ohio State and Indiana also,” he added. “They’ve come to see me workout. I’m going to take a visit to Michigan soon. I’m going to visit Illinois soon and Penn State is talking to me a lot.”

continued...

True sniper, varied releases, good wingspan, can handle and get where he wants to go...would love to have the kid
looks like johnson has been playing with loveday this weekend for wildcat select (pa) in the adidas event (dallas) instead of all-ohio red in atlanta. their teammate jalen bridges (6'7" small forward out wv) has been blowing up (3-star who's a 4-star talent). he's a 2019 recruit who may reclassify to 2020. bridges said osu has been expressing interest, obviously as a 2020 recruit.

like a taller version of ben roderick...

i have no concerns that the staff will find a 2020 wing that we'll be (very) happy with. there are so many good candidates out there that we have a realistic shot with. the question is who the 2020 post player might be. my guess is that player will decide no earlier than the start of football season... unless ho1tmann offers hugley this summer. so much probably depends on how optimistic our staff feels regarding loveday.

I would love to know what the staff's board looks like for the wings in terms of how they're prioritizing them. It's a bit dizzying how many we're involved with and probably about a third of those we have a real shot with, but we can only take one (theoretically).

I like Donovan Johnson, especially with how he shoots the ball for that size/length. He seems fairly fluid and an okay athlete, too, so it is surprising to me that he is not well within the T100 at this point (but maybe that's imminent).

I question if he would end up redundant to Gaffney. I think we need shooting, yes, but I also would kind of prefer a wing who is more of a ballhander/slasher athlete--like Keon Johnson. But do we have a much more realistic shot at Donovan Johnson than Keon Johnson? I don't know.

only if gaffney develops an off-the-dribble game. so far, he's almost solely a catch-and-shoot player.

donovan johnson looks like that middle ground between keon johnson and alonzo gaffney. it's for that reason that i slightly prefer keon. he's noticeably different from gaffney, liddell, jallow, and ahrens. i could see a trio of keon, ej, and alonzo without much overlap. on the other hand, the trio of donovan, ej, and alonzo would form part of a great small-ball lineup. that's a lot of length.

of course, either keon or donovan would be outstanding. neither is a consolation.
