OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

So you think Enes Kanter was a 1 & done? I think most people would say no, since he never actually played in college and was never allowed to. Kanter's eligibility never started. The 1 implies actually playing 1 year. Being ineligible to play does not count as a year of college basketball.

Kanter was a one and done talent which is really what was being discussed before the tangent of what defines a one and done player. Miles Bridges was a one and done talent. He could have declared after one year and been an NBA lottery pick, but chose to return. That is not what Spellman did or is doing (again, he hasn't hired an agent or made a decision yet, though it looks like he'd be a late first round pick if he stayed in). He simply wasn't good enough to get drafted in his first year of draft eligibility. Another oddity on Spellman is that he will be 21 in a couple of months and would have been eligible for the NBA draft 2 years ago had he stayed in his original high school class (switched from 9th grade to 8th grade when he transferred schools).

I think to call someone a one and done, they need to enter and be drafted (at least in the first round) in the first year they are eligible for the draft. I wouldn't call Kanter or Bridges one and done players because Kanter never played college ball and Bridges chose to stay 2 years. Both however were talented enough to be drafted in the first year of draft eligibility, something Spellman was not.

But Spellman never tried to enter the draft last year, right? You assume he wouldn't have been picked, that may be likely, but it is not a certainty.

Carton is the staff's priority and he's a Midwest boy but the competition is fiercest for him out of all our targets and Michigan might be in the lead, and they have a sterling reputation with guards, not to mention are perceived as a national contender with that being reinforced by their recent run to the NC (damn you, Houston).

an article on Rivals highlighted how open Sturdivant is and how he might be looking to stay in the South.

Brian Snow thinks Xavier leads for Franklin and became more certain of that after Franklin visited OSU for the second time.

pretty sure Harris is going to pick Virginia Tech.

who knows with Beverly, some people think he's a heavy MSU lean, others swear he isn't, but I've heard very little to think that OSU is in a super strong spot with him. maybe that will change.

and, no, I'm not expecting any likes for this post.

I think this writer makes a good point to the extent that Ohio State might only take one more recruit this year unless a real talent wants in.
I think one is reserved for a guard, but not necessarily both. Holtmann has also talked about his preference to keep a scholarship spot open if he can. That doesn't mean that the Buckeyes won't take a good player who wants to jump in and take that 13th scholarship, but it's something to keep in mind moving forward. I think there's at least a small chance that they only add one more player, with the understanding that Walker is essentially a 2019 commit.

It's interesting that Ohio State has kept lines open to players like Isaiah Stewart and five-star center Trayce Jackson-Davis when center does not appear like an immediate need at least from a depth standpoint. Kaleb Wesson has three years left and Micah Potter has two. Incoming freshman Jaedon LeDee is a player who could play center in Holtmann's system too.

Walker helped fill a guard need. Gaffney helped fill a need as a Keita Bates-Diop style power forward, and can also play on the wing. After that I think the aim is just to up the talent level of a roster that's taken some hits with seniors graduating and players transferring before Holtmann's arrival, rather than focus on positional need.

yeah, I asked Snow about his CB for Sturdivant. he said he's just heard that OSU has done a good job with Sturdivant so he thought he'd go ahead and put a CB in but he doesn't think it's anywhere close to a done deal or that Sturdivant would be deciding any time soon. and then the more recent Rivals article on Sturdivant definitely makes it sound like Sturdivant is going to take his time and is sort of trying to entertain more schools that are closer to home.

Snow sounds more confident about Franklin to Xavier, at least insomuch as what Snow has been hearing after Franklin visited OSU a second time has only solidified Snow's opinion that Xavier is in the lead.

I wouldn't be surprised if either of those guys picks OSU, really. But I can't say I am confident in either one. Which is okay. It's May 11th.

Meanwhile, Carton just got 4 Crystal Balls to scUM, including Jerry Meyer. So that's... not good.

I honestly am very comfortable with how things will work out for Holtmann. He has proved multiple times in under a year that he gets things done. Young, Jallow, Dakich, Gaffney, Woods and of course the incoming class.

Perhaps the next time you talk to Snow, you might want to him not to put a CB on a recruit when he does not even think that the recruit is going to go to that school. You should remind him of something known as a reputation :)

yeah, pulling sturdivant from the southeast and harris from the mid-atlantic will be a challenge. as is, of course, pulling carton from ann arsehole. i'm confident that we'll get someone, but i can't say i'm confident in any particular player. heck, i might put even odds on the guard we get being a guard we've yet to offer.

first things first, i just want to see some official visits. we can go from there.
