OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

What's the deal with all of the national offers for 2018? Is he offering guys he offered at Butler, did Gene Smith tell him to offer all the big guys, or what? I'm simply not a fan of offering guys from FL, NJ, MO, and wherever when there is plenty to work with in IN, OH, and MI. He was just blowing smoke about the recruiting OH hard stuff, which is kind of odd. He has had tremendous success at Butler without top-100 guys, so why just start offering random players willy-nilly? Cohill said he wasn't just going to offer someone who is a 5-star, so we'll see, but I'm not impressed with all of the new targets.

Ohio guy that fits Holt's system > National guy that fits Holt's system > Ohio guy that does not fit > National guy that does not fit

I'm sure he would have been recruiting Ohio guys to Butler in the 2018 class if he thought they fit the system.

Also, he's late in the game for the '18 recruits so he's better off going after guys he already has built relationships with.

Two of the first offers we have listed are 2018 SG's who stand 6'4"...uh, last I checked, we already had one of those! Maybe the meeting didn't go so well with Dane Goodwin and pops. If he alienates Goodwin and forces him out, I'm out.
holtmann will run three-guard offenses. i actually think another 6'4" to 6'6" shooting guard/forward is a good idea, especially defensively.

as mentioned, Holtmann likes to run three guard. he basically won't be able to do that in 2018-2019 unless he brings in 3 more guards to go with CJ and Bev. and he needs some taller guards, most of the guards you've seen offered are 6'3 and up. 6'2 Cohill is the only Ohio guard we are going to offer besides Goodwin and Cohill is far from guaranteed to commit to OSU. Plus getting in on multiple guards puts some pressure on one or two of them to actually commit. These are players that Holtmann really likes and has existing recruiting relationships with. He thinks they are fits for what he needs. the only OOS forward he has offered so far is Darius Days, who looks like a very good prospect and I think Holt just likes a lot and maybe has some reason to think he has a chance in landing.

getting upset that we are offering a lot of T150 2018 guards when we desperately need guards in the class (and let's not forget that CJ will be a senior that season and who knows how Beverly is going to pan out), I mean, I have no idea why you would be upset about that. if there were more T150 2018 Ohio guards besides Cohill and Goodwin they'd probably all already have offers from Holtmann. and, uh, all these prospects are Midwest recruits besides Days and Muhammad, and Holt has a strong recruiting relationship with both of those guys and they are both T50-level players when it is all said and done.

right now there are two T100 Ohio prospects in the 2019 class, Francis and Mitchell. we will almost definitely get Francis and probably Mitchell, too, if we want him. at the moment 2019 is not looking like a great Midwest class for SGs and wings, we have a better selection in 2018.

these 2018 offers are very much a good thing.

No news on Nance, Ahrens, Bazley, Jallow, or Bingham, but offers to random dudes we are supposed to believe are "Ohio State" guys. Here's an Indiana guard we were recruiting quoted the other day:

http://247sports.com/Article/Indian...targets-Musa-Jallow-and-Robert-Phini-53156549

Even Ohio State, Phinisee’s newest interested team, is currently going through a coaching change.

“I was supposed to visit Ohio State soon, but with that whole coaching change thing going on, nobody has reached out to me yet, so I really don’t know about that,” Phinisee joked.

Robert Phinisee was offered in May by the old staff. He's a 5'11" PG.

He likes guards, that's fine. It just looks bad to me when the only recruit he has for 2018 is a 6'4" SG, and that's who he's offering left and right. I understand the need for G's, but trust me, bringing three SG's in one class may not work. There is nothing wrong with having an Ahrens, Nance, Hunter or Young as your 3. If you can't coach with those guys as your 3, then your "system" is spurious.

2019 Ohio is loaded full of guards, trust me. Jeremiah Francis, Amari Davis, Andre Gordon, Samari Curtis, Myles McBride, Alec Pfriem... All of those guys are B1G-quality players, and Holtmann can coach any of those guys up.

I'm just saying, he came in and said all the right things...then has turned around and gone a route that is the opposite of locking down the state. We are getting tweets from MO, NJ, and FL....we'll see what happens.

I don't think he wants to bring in 3 SGs in the same class. Based on the offers, I think he wants to bring in a lead guard and another wing guard that brings something different to the table than Goodwin. And again, all these guard offers are Midwest recruits other than Muhammad, and all are guys he seems to have good relationships with.

You might be right about the 2019 class. But at this moment I think Francis is the only Ohio guard for sure that we take. Besides, we need guard help ASAP.

To be more specific, I think he wants Cohill, Goodwin, and Hunter. Cohill's not a sure bet so he is also recruiting guys like Ayo, Phinisee, and Weaver. After that he wants another SG that diversifies his options in the backcourt and on the wing (and I dunno, maybe he will come back around to Ahrens on that, but I personally would prefer a couple of these other guys he has offered). We will see if he decides to continue recruiting Bingham or someone who is more of a frontcourt player.

Yes, I definitely like the Cohill offer in that regard. I'm all for 2018 having a PG and a combo G added due to our thinness. But we aren't going to turn this around with a bunch of freshman in two years, so let's look at 2019 while throwing out our offers.

Who's to say Bingham, Jallow, Phinisee are "Ohio State" guys anymore than the other out of state guys they have offered?

If Phinisee hasn't heard from Holtmann and his staff yet they most likely don't think he is good enough to play here in their system. The same goes with Ahrens, Bazley, etc. If this staff didn't offer them as the coach of Butler, most likely they won't get offers now that they are at OSU.

And now Holtmann can get into a lot more living rooms of highly rated national players than he could at Butler. I'll take a top 30 kid who's from Missiouri or Florida over a kid from Ohio if that's what they want to do. Ohio players will get recruited very hard if they feel they are good enough but don't think it's only going to be Ohio or Midwest players this staff goes after.

If you want to be elite and compete for Final Fours you better recruit everyone and anywhere they might be from.

I'm just going off what he said at the press conference. He was going for "Ohio State" guys, and he understood what a talent-rich region he was coming to. That's all I'm saying....he said those words, then his first actions make it look like he's been told to go national or something.

I think what most are saying is that the national offers you see are kids that Holtmann already had relationships with, and the kids who are from Ohio who haven't received offers are kids who didn't get offered even when he was at Butler, either way still has time to get some offers out I'm going to be patient with him I mean he's been on the job what a week...

I guess I have a different interpretation then you about what Holtmann meant when he said that he wanted "Ohio State guys". I took it that he meant that he wanted guys who wanted to play for Ohio State and not necessarily that he needed to recruit guys who were from Ohio. Maybe I am interpreting your post wrong but that was my interpretation of what he meant.
