OSU Men's Basketball Recruiting/Projections/General Discussions

Minus Kam, Jae'Sean, and Joey Lane, plus Ahrens and Goodwin, we are looking at needing to add four more scholarship players next year. That's just crazy talk. You aren't going to get that many quality guys in a class this late (would be six total), so they might as well stock up on a body or two this year. I think they need to pull a 2017 out of the air to at least make this season respectable, in terms of just fielding a team (even MAC-level talent). Lane doesn't even deserve to count, and we can't really count on KBD for a full season. We are looking at maybe 8 roster slots filled next year. Everyone gets in the "rotation"!
I just do not see where Matta is going to get 2 semi-decent players. If he strikes out totally, Smith will have to pull the plug which will be a good thing. This is going to be a total rebuild for a new coach so he might as well have the available scholarships to start it.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Daniel told Bucknuts.com he hopes to make a decision between OSU, Tennessee and DePaul over this weekend.
“I feel as though Ohio State has a very unique opportunity where I can step into a role where I can be a leader and playmaker on the floor,” Daniel said. “I’m looking to go to a program where I can win right away and win big."

The last statement above seems like a huge contradiction, however OSU had the best record of the 3 teams with Depaul finishing last in the Big East.

I see Daniel as a guy who could easily average nearly 20 a game, especially given how little scoring is coming back for the Buckeyes. And if the losses of Thompson, Loving and Lyle lead to fewer turnovers (the Bucks have traditionally had few under Matta), there's the possibility of being mediocre. Which gets you into the NCAA tournament, these days.

yeah, i could see daniel averaging 20... if he attempts at least 20 shots per game.

over his career, daniel has averaged 21.5 points on 16.1 attempts while playing against the worst competition (336th per strength of schedule). he has shot 40% overall and 33.5% from three. this is not an accurate shooter. he's a volume shooter.

one thing i know is that if daniel comes in for just one season and attempts 20 (or 15) shots per game, the team chemistry will be worse than it has been. i mean, lyle was considered selfish, but he attempted only 9 shots per game. and it's not as though daniel has a history of setting up his teammates. he's averaged 2.4 assists to 3.7 turnovers (lyle: 4.4 to 2.7).

all of that being stated, i'll be a little surprised if daniel does not commit to ohio state. ample playing time in a major conference is guaranteed. moreover, i understand why matta has offered him. so i'll root for daniel if he plays for us and i'll hope for the best. caveat emptor, though.

I didn't dislike Lyle for his selfishness (although he shot a lot more in the first half of the season) so much as his decision-making...driving when it wasn't there, launching contested threes early in the shot clock, turnovers on basic basketball plays that he gave a little mustard to, etc...

That being said, you are absolutely correct in that Daniel gives indications of being an even LARGER headache than Lyle. Is he ready for the spotlights of Big Ten basketball? He's got a lot of experience and years under his belt, but he hasn't played in two years, and the competition is going to be a lot better for him.

However, I don't think his hypothetical jacking of shots is going to hurt chemistry too much. We just lost 24.5 shots per game, and they aren't going to be replaced by Kaleb Wesson or Beverly. Twenty is crazy, but I think 13-15 shots a game average is definitely on the table, if Daniel has it. D'Angelo Russell hit the 14.7 mark and DeShaun Thomas had 15.8 in 12-13.

russell and thomas each had an effective field goal percentage of 54%, though. as a team last year, osu's efg% was 52%. daniel? 45%. thats a big difference.

and as you and i noted, daniel's percentages came against really bad competition. i'll be surprised if he's as or more accurate against bigger, faster, and more talented opponents.

i've looked over daniel's career and compiled his shooting stats against any team with a pulse (miami, rutgers, richmond, harvard, and pitt). i might have missed a mediocre team or two. i don't know. to be sure, i didn't miss any teams from his conference. if the meac isn't the worst conference, it's right there. anyway...

against reasonable opposition, daniel shot 31% overall (31/100) and 29.5% from three (15/51) on 20 shots per game.

edit: against those same 5 teams, daniel had 9 assists to 18 turnovers.

Yeah, I watched some clips of him, and his approach struck me as similar to a Jamie Skelton. He does have some good ball-handling skills, though. Oh, and he looks like he's one of those generous 6-footers.

I'm seeing a Tony Stockman, Je'Kel Foster, Ron Lewis type of talent influx here, rather than a Scoonie. We'll definitely take it at this point, but we aren't talking about 20 ppg in the B1G.

M.J. Walker and Cam Johnson are still waiting to see where there best opportunity is and also who officially leaves for the NBA and not returning to their college team.

The Buckeyes only have three guards so it offers a great opportunity to have a tremendous impact with starter opening and starter minutes. Kam Williams hasn't decided yet if he will return but if he doesn't the Buckeyes will only have two guards and will need two guards.

We're supposed to get an announcement today from Daniel. Sounds like we are sitting pretty good with him, but Tennessee had his eye as well.

Also, I guess Kam Williams has to pull his name from the draft this week if he wants to play another season at Ohio State. He cannot be serious, but he is really dragging this out. What is playing one more season in Columbus going to hurt? He's going to start and get plenty of shots...

Cam Johnson's name keeps getting thrown around blue-bloods, so I doubt he's coming here, considering he still has two years left. He's been to Arizona, Kentucky, North Carolina, etc....The Carolina trip was interesting, because apparently Pitt controls the schools he can choose from? I don't know how that works....anyways, they are playing hardball with him if he wants to go to another ACC school.

I think the date is May 24 which is this Wednesday. I have no idea what he is thinking either but maybe he is just tired of playing basketball or at least tired of playing basketball in a losing program.
He chose Tennessee, per tweet from Jeff Goodman at Espn
Well, Daniel was not going to be a lot of help here anyhow except for depth. I guess Beverly can now jack up the shots that Daniel was going to get.

I guess the question now is whether we will have enough guys to scrimmage.. Somebody really needs to call Gene Smith and now! He can also get rid of the baseball coach, Beals, at the same time that he terminates Matta..
