Timberline's Jonathan Stewart bowls over Prosser defender Bud Sexton in the Blazers' 42-35 state quarterfinal win Saturday. On the play, Stewart landed on his feet and continued to run until being tackled by Prosser's Charlie Edwards.

It was Stewart's turn next, as the senior scored on breathtaking runs of 67 and 73 yards to help Timberline go into the break with a 28-21 lead.

"I think he's the best ever," Young said. "Once you watch him a few times, it's hard to believe that there's someone else with more speed, power, balance -- the whole package. He demonstrated that early on he was going to make some plays."

Stewart went into the break with 203 yards on only nine carries, this despite suffering from back spasms starting in the second quarter. He would finish the game with 293 yards on 20 attempts.

"I don't even know what it is -- my back just hurts," he said. "But I was just really trying to get out of my head that I was hurting so I could help my team out."

"I'm very proud of our team because every game, someone has been stepping up and playing a role," Stewart said. "That's what people are doing every game."

don't know how Snoop could manage a trip to THE game... He has a state playoff game at 7PM Friday... and only flight from Seattle to Columbus would have to be a Red Eye .. it's about a 7 hr flight with a connect.. plus the 3 hr time diff...

I would like to have him experience "the game first hand as much as anyone, but at this point in the season, Snoop needs to focus all of his attention on winning their remaining games. Having to jet straight from the game for a college visit would not be fair to him, or his teammates. Once his season is over, he can make his visits and then his decision.

I just hope like hell he makes an official visit, at some point, to Columbus before he makes his decision.

He tao why don't you give some backing to your post as to why you don't think he will qualify. tOSU would not of offered if they believe that he will not qualify. To just come on the board and say he won't qualify with out having any info on why is ridiculous.

Bellevue runs over Timberline
Hasty unstoppable with six touchdowns

By MOLLY YANITY
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

TUMWATER -- In a mid-game span of six carries, he had five touchdowns. He rushed for 325 yards and six touchdowns, juking and dashing his way all over the turf at Tumwater Stadium last night. He shook off defenders, bounced around them, made them look foolish.

His name isn't at the top of the state's all-time rushing list.

His name is J.R. Hasty.

"When you get in that open field ... you just have to make a play. You see the line and get through and see all the field, you have to make a cut, make a move, make it happen," Hasty said.

The big play ruled, but not how 6,400 onlookers had predicted, as Hasty broke for long, quick touchdowns. But instead of responses by Timberline's Jonathan Stewart, the state's all-time leading rusher, it was the Wolverines' defense that answered as Bellevue rolled to a 49-9 Class 3A quarterfinal rout of the Blazers.

The victory sets up a semifinal in the Tacoma Dome next weekend against Lynden and puts the No. 1 Wolverines in prime position to earn an unprecedented fourth consecutive 3A crown.

With his six touchdowns, Hasty tied the state's all-time record of touchdowns in a season at 45. One more and he'll pass the mark set by Bethel's Steve Dildine in 2001.

Despite getting flagged for holding twice on its first offensive series, Bellevue held to its big-play form, as Keith Rosenberg ripped of a 72-yard run to give Bellevue the early lead.

Timberline (10-2) marched down the field on the ensuing possession, but on third-and-goal from the 1, Bellevue defensive lineman Trevor Carpine stuffed Stewart for no gain. On the next play, Blazers quarterback Nick Maxwell fumbled the snap to turn the ball over.

"We thought it'd be more competitive," Timberline coach Kevin Young said. "Had we capitalized on those early chances, it could have been a different game."

But it was simply Hasty's game.

With less than a minute to play in the half, he broke for his first big touchdown, a 54-yarder up the gut. He slipped to the sideline and found himself face-to-face with Stewart, the only player between him and the goal.

"I saw him. I know he's one of the safeties. He sits back there and tries to hawk. I rushed straight at him and then made a move," Hasty said.

Hasty broke to his left as Stewart slipped to the ground.

"He played great. Unbelievable," Bellevue coach Butch Goncharoff said. "He always does ... always does."

Goncharoff credited the team for making precise adjustments at the half that broke the game open.

After Hasty's half-ending score, he found the end zone on his next two touches with rushes of 75 and 27 yards.

Ryan Lee intercepted a Maxwell pass in the red zone and Hasty took the ball 96 yards for a touchdown with 9:23 to play to put the game out of reach at 42-9.

With his 325 yards on 16 carries, Hasty brought his season yardage total to 2,251.

Stewart, who visibly struggled with the pain of back spasms suffered throughout the week, went 129 yards on 20 carries.

He and Hasty shook hands and hugged in a post-game lineup.

Hasty said the comparisons between the two nagged at him, but that he had heard that Timberline players had taken part in some pregame smack talk.

"If you're going to call us out, you better be careful what you wish for," he said.

He meant it.

Epic meeting for Hasty, Stewart
Bellevue, Timberline stars main attraction in state quarterfinal

By SAM CAMERON
SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER

TUMWATER -- People lined up to see them. Three hours before last night's game, people stood in the fading sunlight, waiting to see Bellevue play Timberline. More specifically, they came to see J.R. Hasty and Jonathan Stewart. Came to see them run.

They waited as dusk turned to dark and they sat bundled in hats, mittens and scarves. There were mothers clutching coffee and children clutching mothers. There were old men in coats and teenagers in T-shirts. They were of all races, ages and backgrounds. They could be heard talking shop, talking politics, talking school and talking football.

"He runs a 4.3 and he's like running into a tree," an unidentified fan said of Timberline's Stewart.

"That's my boy," said another of Bellevue's Hasty.

"Hopefully there's enough room for everyone in the stands," said still another.

There was, barely. About 6,400 fans were on hand when they finally arrived. One side seemed to thaw as they cheered when Timberline came onto the field. Later, when Bellevue arrived, the other did the same.

Then, they got to see what they came for. They got to see them run.

Hasty, the son of former NFL player James Hasty, put on a show for all of them. He ran almost free for 325 yards and six touchdowns on 16 carries in a 49-9 Bellevue victory. But Stewart ran as well. He was in pain from the onset, and still he ran 20 times for 129 yards.

They have been compared and contrasted their entire careers, and as much as they are different, they are the same. They are both 5-10, and both run 40-yard dashes around the low 4-second mark. They both have coped with ankle injuries. They both have broken state rushing records. Most importantly, they both bring people together to watch them and to tell stories about them.

"It's been fun for me," Timberline coach Kevin Young said. "I've been able to meet all kinds of people and do all kinds of things. I hope it's been fun for Jonathan."

For the past four years, the state has been lucky. It has had J.R. and Jonathan. It has been able to watch them gain miles and score nearly 200 combined touchdowns.

After the game, the two shook hands and embraced, and it was a powerful moment. In Hasty's eyes was the shine of victory, and in Stewart's was the glossy gaze of defeat.

Both will no doubt run in college. According to the high school sports website Rivals.com, Stewart is the highest-rated back in the nation. Hasty is No. 14. At this point, their futures look boundless.

The comparisons don't end on the football field.

"He's got a good head even if it's not in football," Shannon Hasty said of her son. "I think the same is true of Jonathan. Whoever gets either one (in college) will be blessed."

Why not wait too see what happens before we write a good kid off. Anything can happen and the fact is this seems like a good kid who has had some issues to deal with on his SATs'. Alot of kids have had similar things to deal with. He is a great talent and OSU could use him. As Lloydserv stated, he could work on his acedemic issues and still contribute if he fixed those issues. He is going to have these issues anywhere he goes... why not at OSU. If his character is good and he can run as good as we all think he can ... why not try to see if he can do well at OSU? Why not at least wish the kid well at least?

You may be right Taosman but what good do post like that contribute?? Not flaming, just asking.

On a side note: I hope he was watching the Ohio State vs. M*ch!g*n game today and got goosebumps and it gave him a desire to be a part of something special in Columbus Ohio. GO BUCKEYES !!!!!!
