Oregon RB Jonathan "Snoop" Stewart (official thread)

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/preps/202374_pbok04.html

STEWART HONORED: Timberline senior running back Jonathan Stewart, the career rushing leader for Washington with 7,755 yards, and his teammates were honored last night at the Tacoma Dome.

Stewart on Thursday was named the Gatorade state player of the year, making him a finalist for the national player of the year award to be announced this month.

"All of my teammates have been there for me through thick and thin, and vice versa," Stewart said last night. "There's lots of love on this team."

Stewart ran for 2,301 yards on 205 carries with 30 rushing TDs this season.

"Jonathan is a gifted football player who has more tools than any high school running back I've ever seen," Timberline coach Kevin Young said in a release. "The more I see him, the more in awe I am of him. He's so good right now, but the scary thing is he can get even better."

Timberline RB visits USC, still has three to go
Stewart talks visits
By Chris Fetters

Northwest Recruiting Analyst

It was a pain Jonathan Stewart hadn't experienced before and he hopes he never has to again. Sharp back spasms rendered the normal workhorse for Timberline High positively mortal, and even more so the next week during a playoff grudge match against three-time state champs Bellevue.

The Wolverines won by 40, and even a completely healthy Stewart may have only made a modest dent in that margin, but it's a chance he won't have again, at least with the Blazers.

"Right now I'm just trying to rest my back and then I'll start my training for the (U.S. Army) All-American Bowl," the Scout.com number-one running back said Sunday. "They (back spasms) started during the Prosser game. The pain was sharp, but I'll be OK."

Stewart added that a trip to the doctor yielded a prognosis for no long-term back issues.

Something else that isn't a big help to those suffering back woes is a trip in an airplane, but Stewart braved the two-hour-plus trip from Seattle to Los Angeles to see USC play Notre Dame during an official visit.

"It was pretty cool," he said of his visit. "I wanted to see the tradition and I also wanted to get my own view on things down there, see what it was like from my perspective. I enjoyed my visit. It's definitely different than what I'm used to, but it's not as bad as some portrayed it to be."

DE Lawrence Jackson was Jonathan's host. "He was really down to earth," he said of LJ. "All the players on that team were really down to earth."

When asked for a highlight of the visit, Stewart couldn't name just one. "It was just fun," he said. "We just hung out a lot and ate a lot."

From the coaches' perspective, USC feels like Stewart could be a nice compliment to their run game. "With LenDale White and Reggie Bush, the coaches call it their 'Thunder and Lightning' package," he said. "I think I can be the 'Thunder' in that package."

But before Stewart becomes a true force of nature, he still has some more visits to take. "I'm going to Tennessee on December 10th and then to Oregon on either January 6th or 7th," he said. A new school - Oklahoma State - was mentioned by Stewart for his final official visit, but no trip to Stillwater has been set up yet.

And as he's done since the beginning, Stewart is holding his leaders close to the vest. He plans on making his decision the day of the All-American Bowl January 15th, but would not hesitate to wait if he still wasn't done with the recruiting process.

This is, I think the 3rd update with no mention of OSU. If OSU was aggressively going after this kid, Tres and Peterson were on the left coast last week, we could assume they did not visit J.S. It's safe to say OSU is not recruiting this kid at this time.

2 of Wells, Gwaltney, and Ringer.

I am with you on this one bobcat. If he can't get his act together and get a passing score then we arent going to recruit him. I bet he goes to Wazzu.

And we take Wells and Gwaltney hopefully.

Lemmonhead's chat today

Chris (Marina del Rey,CA): Tom, I need my USC recruiting fix. Any updates on any recruits and which way they're leaning? How much of chance would you say we have in landing Johnathan Stewart?

Tom Lemming: Stewart had a great visit to USC last week. They are a leader in landing him if Stewart feels he can play as a true freshman. However, keep your eye on who the Huskies hire. That could be a factor in his final decision.

Tom Lemming: Trojans once again are going to have a great year with limited scholarships. Right now they are in a position to select players, as opposed to recruiting.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tommy Belding (Oklahoma City): I heard Jonathon Stewart was waiting on the winner of USC vs OU. Is that true?

Tom Lemming: I don't think Jonathan is that shallow. More likely, he is waiting to see where he would fit in as a true freshman.

Tom Lemming: There is always an outside shot Ohio State and Miami ... and a longshot Notre Dame .. could get involved.

Newberg's top 10

4) Jonathan Stewart (RB) Olympia (Wa.) Timberline (No. 9 overall)
Where will the nation's top running back sign? That's the million-dollar question. Nobody knows, including Stewart at this time. If he decides to stay close to home, watch out for Washington State. Stewart will visit the Vols this weekend and Oregon in early January. He has already tripped to Southern California and Washington State. USC entered the Stewart sweepstakes late in the process and they have offered him a scholarship. If there is a fifth visit it could go to Oklahoma State. He would like to make a decision in San Antonio during the U.S. Army All-American Game or perhaps sooner if he's ready. This one is wide open right now.

I hate to think this out loud, but I would guess that Ty Willingham going to Washington will make that program look awfully attractive to Snoop. I think Ty tips the scales in favor of Snoop playing for his home state University.
