Oregon at tOSU, Sep 11th, Noon ET on Fox

Interesting thought.

Here's a better one.

On a day - a day that will never be forgotten at least in my mind - where we memorialized those who died 20 years ago, who died and sacrificed for the last 20 fucking years in some of literally the worst places on the entire planet, and those who died recently trying to help those who could, evacuate, here we are, on the goddamn internet, bitching, whining moaning and complaining about a friggin game played by 18-23 year olds.

We need to get a damned grip. No, losing is not ok. But there are FAR bigger things in life. If there is ANY day to point to that, it's today.
ok cool….

So you’d say it was wrong to overturn the call against OSU last week in the Minnesota game? Was it right to eject Joey Bosa from the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame? Or is it only “textbook” when it goes against your team?

oh look it’s the caped crusader of targeting coming to be self righteous…and wrong.

It’s textbook when it exactly describes the text that one would find in a book, or in a PDF, for all the youngins. Minnesota was probably the wrong call. The Bosa call was closer. I saw you brought up the Clemson targeting call on Wade. That was probably the right call…going by the text…in the rule book…and it was called that way on the field? It was also a catch and fumble, which was called incorrectly in that game.

They are gonna have to get it together in the first half. Slow starts like that are going to lose you games against better teams. Can’t be completely reliant on second half rallies all year.

This was the deciding factor. Even with the defense getting gashed, if the O can show up and just make it a tie game, you don't have to feel so panicked going down two scores consistently. I'm interested to see some breakdowns from the play today. Have a feeling that Oregon was manipulating the RPO plays in the first half, causing OSU to think they could run but have a late change that made it much tougher.

As for takeaways:

Stroud will be be fine. I don't really get the criticisms. He definitely made mistakes. Needs to corral the high throws and settle down on long bombs he misses due to rushing throws. Trust the pocket and make sure your mechanics are right. That being said, there aren't many college QBs that could've taken on the task of what he did today. Maybe Haskins. Stroud was making elite throws but missed others. Just not realistic to think he was going to hit everything. To me, he looks like a star in the making.

Play calling was altered too quickly that made the team one dimensional. Can't blame them, especially because Oregon was gashing the defense and crashing down on the run, but they'll need balance. I have a lot of faith in Williams and Henderson. Talent is there in the backfield.

No idea about the D.
  • If you told me the DL was going to be a non-factor, I probably wouldn't have expected much better than they're playing right now. That's a huge problem and I'm not sure how much better they're going to get. Honestly my #1 concern.
  • Still think it's more than just play-calling. Not impressed by the development of senior LBs and safeties. Washington gets a lot of talk about a HC, but he's not super impressive.
  • There were times in which I was impressed by guys flying to the ball.
  • If Coombs can't or won't adjust to make sure the offense isn't manipulating looks, then he needs to go asap. Hoping that's not the case though. Not because I like Coombs, but I want to see wins.
Still think this team has a lot of potential. Really frustrated right now because this was as winnable game, even with how poorly they played at times. Early losses provide a lot of teaching opportunities, but it also means you need to win out. Hard to expect that right now, but I think it's possible.

I realize that, as an Ohio State fan, a 7 point loss while out-gaining the other team feels like being dominated, but … two quick points

  1. objective reality gives zero fucks about your feelings
  2. This is why people think fans of elite teams tend to act entitled
I don't think that Ohio State was "dominated".

However, I do think that, generally speaking, Ohio State was not able to make big plays when it needed them, and that Oregon was able to make big plays when it needed them.

It's textbook when it's textbook. That was textbook. That play will be in the updated edition of Targeting for Dummies.
