Oregon at tOSU, Sep 11th, Noon ET on Fox

Young team is going to takes some lumps this season and grow from it. I keep going back to…What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. They will learn from this. They will get better. It might take all season but, luckily the last regular season game is ALL that really matters. And that just might be enough time to figure it all out. These young Bucks will be ready and battle tested for The Game.

Some of y’all need to get your shit together too.

Fuck *ichigan!!

I kind of blame the Proclaimers for that one, honestly. WTF, stadium audio folks??
So this was kind of a throwaway complaint, but seriously this (“I would walk 500 miles”) was such a painfully weird stadium musical choice at an important moment for the Bucks right before the 2nd quarter started. Also whoever was marking the down-and-distance on the stadium boards needs a lot of work too.

Alright, well I will do my candid post-game assessment while it is fresh in my mind, because I am not going to go back and rewatch that one.

1. I am starting off positive, because most of the rest won't be. At least this is a loss to a highly ranked opponent at the beginning of the year. Yes, I am talking about for playoff chances. If this product we saw today is really our team, then we won't come close to sniffing the playoffs and we better worry about not losing more than 3 games and start backsliding. However, after 2015 when we lost to an unheralded Va Tech team and looked horrible, I know a team can grow and turn into a different product at the end of the year. So for now, I just hope we beat the team up north and don't have a terrible season that results in a backslide, but don't give up on this team.

2. Now that that's over with, this seriously is just an unacceptable loss. We had a long week after a Thursday opener, Oregon just struggled against fucking Fresno State and had less prep time than us, it was essentially a 9am game for Oregon, and Oregon had like half of its best players out of the game. Even with some struggles, there is no way this should have been a loss under the circumstances. I honestly think Oregon is probably a 2-3 loss team this year even in a weak PAC 12 and even though I said we lost to a highly ranked opponent, I don't think they will be by season's end. I mean, I hope they do have a good year now, but I just think today was us sucking more than Oregon being good.

3. SET A FUCKING EDGE! Good god, there is no way the edge should have been that damn open all game. You can't tell me we don't have the players to do that, this is purely X's and O's with our coaching. Hell, we didn't even have a CB out there to attempt a tackle.

4. Which leads me to the inevitable...our defensive scheme and play calling is flat out atrocious. I have been an advocate of "let's wait and see" on Coombs as a defensive coordinator...I am no longer in that camp. I don't think he should be fired, he is a damn good DB coach and recruiter. But he just isn't a coordinator. I mean, it would be one thing if Oregon had an offense like when Chip Kelly was coach and just made huge plays with great players. I think they have an alright offense, but our defense was rarely in the right position unless Oregon just threw it in 1 on 1 coverage. That leads me to my next point...our corners were in perfect position almost every play when we went man and just went skill against skill. But there were just tons of blown coverages where it was 100% on the coaches to not get the players in the right position imo. Some of the fault lands on the players, but to me most of it falls squarely on the shoulders of the defensive staff imo, namely Coombs. I don't have the energy to look up the year, but this defense has the smell of the year we got torched under Grinch. I frankly don't see it getting fixed because we can't undo what we have trained for all year. I think the 1-high safety and playing LBs almost 7 yards off the LOS is fucking stupid on its very face, but now the proof is in the pudding. Is it too late to change it?

5. I really don't know why either of Eichenberg or Shaw was on the field for this game, let alone why they never came off. Both of these guys might be well served in a game like Iowa or Wisconsin, but damn sure not Oregon. Simon should never come off the field moving forward at LB. Other than that, I say it is an open audition moving forward at LB. As for Shaw, I don't want to rag on the kid, but he moves like his entire body is covered in cement...if that is the best we have at safety, then we are in serious trouble. But you have to think we can get any of Ransom, Kourt Williams, Young, Martinez, Hickman, etc. into whatever role Shaw is playing and be an improvement. You have to at least try anyways.

6. Good lord I have never seen an Ohio State DL fail to get any pressure like today. Then every time we blitzed, they saw it coming a mile away and got the ball quick directly to the point we blitzed from. Utterly outcoached there, but the DL HAS to get more pressure or we are going to get destroyed this year. Despite that, I thought that Burke looked excellent again and Brown had some nice moments. Why Banks isn't playing I don't know, but we do need him back...but then I think Burke starts over Brown, he's that good. Ransom wasn't as impressive as in the past, but the blown assignments were just baffling.

7. Alright, so I went on about how the defense is terrible right now like captain obvious. But the offense didn't do its job either, we should have easily put up 35 points at home against a beleaguered defense. The inability to run the ball is flat out bewildering to me, I thought we would run the ball at will with our OL and we flat out got stood up. OL didn't get the job done up front in the run game, and that was a huge issue, particularly as the Oregon offense ran the ball at will on us.

8. The stats look great for Stroud, but shit he missed a ton of critical throws that could have won the game. Had moments where it looked like he was getting hot and lead us back to a win, but faded at the end when we needed him. He had a good game overall, but I don't know if "good" is going to cut it in this QB room. I'm not calling for his job, but McCord should be getting reps the next couple of games. The talk was CJ was a leader, but I am not seeing that so far really. I am far from being out on Stroud, I think he can be a great QB here and will keep improving, but I am not going to rule out seeing a different starter at some point in the season.

9. I want to be clear up front that WE lost this game, we didn't deserve to win with the mental mistakes, penalties and blown assignments. However, the refs fucked us royally on two critical plays, both of which involved Olave. The most obvious one is the clear pass interference on Olave in the endzone on 4th down. Call that one and good chance we tie it up with plenty of time on the clock. Second being the clear targeting on Olave...love or hate the rule, that defenders crown of the helmet hit Olave almost identically to Skalski on Fields in the playoffs last year. Lower the crown at contact like that and its targeting. The booth had a million years to look at it and got it wrong. Recall that would have given us a first down in a critical moment. The officiating was a letdown.

10. Miyan and Henderson both tried cutting way too much instead of getting upfield when they had a hole. Part of that was probably trying to hit a big one since we were down all game, but less jukes in the future. Interesting Teague didn't get a single carry. Even though the OL didn't do their part in the run game, Miyan ran hard and should keep getting the start imo. But Henderson is going to keep getting an even split and eventually more carries. I really think Henderson should have been in on the last few drives though, much more playmaking ability.

11. The offensive play calling today was pretty suspect. I get trying to stick with the run when it wasn't working early, but for the love of god do we only have one run play up the middle? Has the read-option died when we have a QB that can run and plenty of capable backups for the first time in awhile? Then the last drive of the second half, were we aware we had no timeouts left? Then taking FOREVER to snap the ball in the second half when we needed to have a sense of urgency. This is the first time I can recall under Day where the offensive play calling was questionable to say the least.

12. I opened positive and that's the way I will close it. JSN was lights out today and the comments from Olave and Wilson basically saying JSN is the best they have seen might not be far off, he looked every bit the part today. Excited about his future here. Next couple weeks we should see more of Fleming, Egbuka, etc. unless we meltdown and struggle against Tulsa and Akron.

That's a wrap. It's just a football game and life goes on, I will still watch every game, win or lose. I am preparing for the worst though after seeing the performance today, particularly because I don't think the defense can be fixed. Luckily "the worst" for us is probably a 3-4 loss season, which most fan bases would consider a great year. Go Bucks and on to the next one.

I will give the abridged Mike Leach version from here:

About the running game. The main running play is essentially the "belly" play but it doesn't appear the QB has the keep option. It's a straight give. The offensive line is zone blocking most of the time with a wham block on the back side, with the whole idea being the running back runs to daylight. Unfortunately, there wasn't a ton of daylight for whatever reason today.

Yeah I have noticed that, with no keep option for the QB it is just so damn predictable. CJ can run and like I said, its not like the year where we had Fields and no backups if we are worried about injuries. We HAVE to incorporate the read option again so CJ can run it. I don't know if CJ is just cautious or the staff is encouraging him to not get hit, but he needs to tuck the ball more and run it.
