Opening day KO coverage team

  • Who do you think will be on our KO coverage team for opening day? Name the 10 gunners (kicker excluded obviously). My guess for now is:

    • Trevor Robinson (LB)
    • Sirjo Welch (DB)
    • Curtis Terry (LB)
    • Chad Hoobler (LB)
    • Grant Schwartz (DB)
    • Kurt Coleman (DB)
    • Larry Grant (LB)
    • Aaron Gant (DB)
    • Thaddeus Gibson (LB)
    • Tyler Moeller (LB)

These three will be on the team if they aren't position starters and will bump out three from the above list:
    • Nick Patterson (DB)
    • Brandon Mitchell (DB)
    • Antonio Smith (DB)

    I'll guess:
    • Trever Robinson (LB)
    • Sirjo Welch (DB)
    • Curtis Terry (LB)
    • Chad Hoobler (LB)
    • Grant Schwartz (DB)
    • Kurt Coleman (DB)
    • Larry Grant (LB)
    • Curt Lukens DB)
    • Thaddeus Gibson (LB)
    • Ryan Lukens (LB)
I'm thinking Gant and Moeller will redshirt.

    Who is Trevor Robinson?

And I thought the "Gunners" were just the two fastest guys (corners and safeties) off of the edge, not the LBs in the center.

    Am I wrong?

Trevor Robinson is a 4th-year junior LB out of Huguenot HS in Richmond, Va.

I think you're thinking of our punt coverage team, where he have to keep an offensive line to block rushers and thus can only release a couple outside "gunners" on the outside to fly down to make the tackles. Since we don't have anyone rushing the kicker on kickoffs, everyone but the kicker can be be gunners.

Hartline told me that he didn't think he'd be on Kick Coverage this year...maybe some returns if on Special Teams at all. (this was at the Night Practice / Autograph Event)

But I have a friend who knows a guy who works for Smith & Barney, who knows a guy with an 'in' with the Program who says that Rolle will be like a heat-seeking missle on Specials.

    :wink2:

Bump for the 2007 opener against YSU:
    • Hartline (WR)
    • Rolle (LB)
    • Spitler (LB)
    • Homan (LB)
    • Moeller (LB)
    • Schwartz (DB)
    • Gant (DB)
    • Coleman (DB)
    • Patterson (DB)
    • Russell (DB)
That looks like a good list but I might put a few guys out there in place of Hartline & Russell. It's hard for me to imagine that Russell will start at safety, do kick returns, and kick coverage. With Jamo not starting, I'd think his speed would be an asset on coverage. I'd also think that someone like Trevor Robinson would be a good candidate since he would provide another body with some size.

    I'll guess:

    Oliver (DB)
    Rolle (LB)
    Spitler (LB)
    Homan (LB)
    Moeller (LB)
    Schwartz (DB)
    Gant (DB)
    Gibson (LB)
    Patterson (DB)
    Robinson (FB)

Watching the YSU right now, and here are the 10 gunners that started:

    • Jamario O'Neal
    • Aaron Gant
    • Chimdi Chekwa
    • Shawn Lane
    • Eugene Clifford
    • Brian Rolle
    • Thad Gibson
    • Tyler Moeller
    • Trevor Robinson
    • Marcus Williams

Since then, as with other units on the team, there have been some changes. Without checking the Purdue recording, I think Torrence, Schwartz, Amos, and Hines are now on the kickoff coverage team.
