Once is Not Enough (from summer practice thread)

Gotta agree with DaveyBoy. We have beaten up on a weaker-than-normal Big Ten...4 Big Ten titles is great but that wouldn't have come close to that in the Big 12 or SEC. That doesn't happen in those conferences because it is much better competition. LSU, Florida, and USC obviously dominated us. We also lost to an Illinois team we probably should have beat. Our big wins? A moral victory for almost beating Texas? I look back to the past couple seasons and I just don't think we beat many, or any national contenders, thus making us; pretenders.

Don't get me wrong though, the group of guys that left were a ton of fun to follow and were still a good team, but I just think the resume is misleading (as Davey said). While we shouldn't necessarily expect better results on paper in the future, I think fans just want to see us compete better on the national stage. With the recruiting classes we have had in '08 and '09, I do expect us to do so. TP, Block O, Flash, Stoney, Posey, etc. all came in to win a national title together and just have great chemistry. Stearing this back on topic, I think the '08 class is my cause for extreme optimism. I just love their attitude and potential...I can't wait to see it on the field this year.

lol, rag on me all you want, I just don't like losing and I'm never going to accept it or be okay with it when it's happening consistently. If you think that's bad then I don't know what to say. The main point is that I see something in this class that we didn't have the last few years.

Maybe last years class wasn't the only part of the Buckeye family missing the killer instinct? I'm glad our quarterback doesn't think like y'all do.

Here is a list of every one of Ohio State's seasons since 1904. Count up the number of seasons with zero losses.... or count up the number of seasons with a National Championship... Divide that number by the number of seasons represented....

You're going to be disappointed and calling the rest of us out for "lack of killer instinct" about 98% of the time (I didn't actually do the math).

It's called reality, sparky. Do I want OSU to be undefeated, unscored upon and clear Champion of the universe? Of course. But, I'm not about to start bitching about results in the midst of one of the, if not THE, greatest 10 year run in Ohio State history.

Miami nearly won the NC in 2000, won it in 2001, and lost to us in double OT in 2002.

They have not been heard from since.

Beginning in 1993 Nebraska lost 3 games in 5 years.

They haven't been to a BCS bowl since the 2001 season.

Michigan ..... well, nuff said.

It is incredibly difficult to get to and remain atop the college football landscape. I have been following OSU football since 1960, and the past 8 years are as good as it gets. These ARE the good old days.

And for all the talk about the 2008 class, and as much as I love Todd Boeckman, it is very difficult to win an NC with either a true Frosh or a QB with Boeckman's limitations.

And for all our talk about talent and our wonderful recruiting classes - USC and Florida finished 1-2 in recruiting (per Scout) in BOTH 2006 and 2007.

Given the right breaks we have been in position to win the NC in most of the past 8 years. We should be in the same situation for at least the next 3-4. If it doesn't happen there is no reason to cry in our beer.

Whatever happened to the summer practice thread?

Simply put: I think you're spoiled.

Four Straight Big Ten Titles
Four Straight 10-win seasons.

That's a helluva a lot of winning.

If you're expecting undefeated seasons year in/out; then you're going to be taking Cymbalta by the handful shortly.

To me, there was a massive case of senioritis. Myself and others have mentioned this. However, it was still a successful season in my eyes.

I took it like he was saying that the class had the talent to win a national championship and that's why there was dissapointment that they did not. You could then say they didn't meet expectations, or live up to their potential, or whatever, and maybe it was because they lacked "that something".

I think all of us would agree that there are at most 5 programs that have experienced a better stretch over the last 5 years, but that doesn't mean that given the talent at OSU in this last class I'm not dissapointed that a national championship didn't come with it.

I don't believe that you're interpreting it the same as the intent.

Oh well... back to Summer Practice 2009!

while you're researching it, please find the number of times Ohio State has been humiliated 35-3 just a few months after losing their 2nd bowl game in 2 years by a very convincing or blowout margin.

it cuts both ways

You'd think we lost to Appy State and Toledo in consecutive years. Cheesus Crust!

Anyone know where I can find a thread with updates from this year's practice? Somehow I have gotten lost and I ended up in this OSU-versus-the-world, we-never-get-any-respect thread. Any help would be appreciated, TIA.

Contributing to the very thing you're bitching about. :shake:

Talk about duplicitous. :tongue2:

Is this going to be split off? In my eyes its an interesting debate but I'll wait to comment until it's out of the practice thread.

I think 2731 and DaveyBoy have a point.

Also, I know it's not popular with everyone on here but what I think has been lacking the last few years is the kids who grew up in a less than desirable situation. There have been so many great kids come through the program that I think a little bit of the nastiness required to be a great football team has been lost.
I just think there is a line between the guys who got kicked off the team a few years ago and the guys who have never done anything wrong in their lives. Players like a Thad Gibson or Ray Small may very well get the team over the hump. Even Pryor ,once he takes over the leadership role, will probably get it done. Remember, he's an intense enough guy to yell at opposing teams fans while playing high school basketball.

Also, doesn't anyone else get a little envious when they see Florida or USC throwing it deep to go up by 30 in the first half? I guess it's a matter of preference but I've always loved to see teams that step on their opponents throat when they have them down. Way, way too many close games over the years where the talent on the field was far from equal and tOSU went up early just to run plays that never worked.
